3:32 am
as well as drugs, vaccines, and food safety plus medical research. jarred hill now with more. what's been the reaction to this pick? >> reporter: i mean, it's about as complicated as rfk jr.'s views on some of these issues. in particular, some of the more controversial statements about vaccines and fluoride raising questions on the hill. his talk about fixing food and big pharma have gotten bipartisan praise, but a big question for some is is he qualified, and can he get confirmed. >> we won the popular vote. i love that. >> reporter: president-elect donald trump taking a victory lap at mar-a-lago last night, announced north dakota governor doug burgum as his pick for secretary of the interior. >> we're going to do things with energy and with land, interior, that is going to be incredible. >> reporter: but it's his choice of former democrat robert f. kennedy jr. for secretary of health and human services that's grabbing headlines.
3:33 am
>> you're going to do some unbelievable things -- nobody's going to be able to do it like you it. >> reporter: kennedy ran as an independent in the 2024 election before dropping out to endorse trump. rfk jr.'s push to combat chronic disease and clean up the food supply has resonated with the maga base and beyond. but it's his calls to remove fluoride from drinking water and criticisms of vaccines that have raised concerns among public health experts. >> there's no vaccine that is, you know, safe and effective. >> as a pediatrician i know that there's nothing that i did that had more value for the children in my practices than ensuring that they were vaccinated fully and on time. >> reporter: on capitol hill, the fallout continues over trump's pick for attorney general. with even some republican senators questioning whether former florida congressman matt gaetz will have a path to confirmation. >> i have concerns that he can't get across the finish line and we're going to spend a lot of political capital. >> reporter: gaetz resigned from the house to pursue the nomination wednesday, just days

before the house ethics committee had planned to vote on whether to release a report regarding allegations of sexual misconduct and drug use. matt gaetz has denied any wrongdoing. >> let's talk about the matt gaetz ethics report. is there any chance the public could see this? will even senators be able to see it? >> my hard answer is not going to be satisfying, but the journey is going to be worth it. so before he resigned, the house ethics committee was going to meet actually today about releasing that report. because they only have jurisdiction over current members of the house a public release, it seems unlikely at this point. a bunch of republican senators include something on the gop-led judiciary committee, which would oversee gaetz's nomination for the ag, say they do want to see what is in this investigation. one said he would be open to issuing a subpoena, at least getting the evidence that they were using to weigh a major decision for the country. so again, my final answer -- it's not clear.

>> all right. we'll continue to watch it. thank you so much. president biden is in peru for the start of a six-day visit to latin america. he arrived in lima yesterday for the apec summit and will stop in the amazon rainforest and g20 summit in brazil next week. on saturday he's set to meet one on one with chinese president xi jinping. it's their third meeting since biden became president. now this is the final major international summit for biden before he leaves office. some scary moments on board a scandinavian airlines flight when it hit severe turbulence.
