continues to pick his cabinet members at record speed. one of his choices now facing questions over a payment to a woman who accused him of sexual assault. restrictions removed. president biden now allowing ukraine to use american long-range missiles to strike deeper into russia. why the change of heart. and check your fridge. another e. coli outbreak, this time linked to organic carrots sold in some of the biggest retailers across the country. good morning, i'm michael george. we start with donald trump's transition. the president-elect is moving fast as he names more key cabinet selections, and this week he's expected to focus on economic posts. it's his pick to lead the defense department that's now coming under scrutiny after news broke that pete hegseth had settled a lawsuit with a woman who accused him of sexual assault. cbs' naomi ruchim joins us now. what do we know about this allegation? >> reporter: good morning. hegseth's team is, of course, denying it. but there has been no shortage

of pushback and doubt even from within the republican party about some of president-elect donald trump's picks for his administration. pete hegseth is facing a new controversy -- he not only faces scrutiny on his experience but also now a sexual assault accusation. president-elect donald trump attended a ufc event in new york over the weekend as another fight brews on capitol hill over some of his controversial cabinet picks. >> there's deep concern but also a deep opportunity to sort of make sure we are putting only qualified people in these jobs. >> reporter: cbs news has learned trump's defense secretary pick, former fox news host pete hegseth, paid a settlement to a woman who had accused him of sexual assault in 2017. first reported by "the washington post," hegseth's attorney told us he paid the woman to ward off a baseless lawsuit that would have likely gotten him fired from fox, and that she initiated a consensual

encounter. hegseth denies the allegations, and no charges were filed. meanwhile, some senators say they want to see a house ethics committee report on trump's attorney general pick, former florida congressman matt gaetz. >> i believe the senate should have access to that. >> reporter: gaetz resigned from congress last week just days before the committee was set to vote on whether to release the report probing allegations of sexual misconduct and drug use, all of which gaetz denies. house speaker mike johnson says releasing the report would open a pandora's box. >> it should not come out, and why, because matt gaetz resigned from congress. he is no longer a member. >> reporter: over the weekend trump announced brendan carr, the current top republican in the federal communications commission commission, as his pick to lead the agency. and fracking company ceo chris wright for energy secretary. to watch for this week, president-elect donald trump is expected to announce his picks

for key economic positions. he has yet to name his choices for treasury, labor, commerce, and education. meantime, former hud secretary dr. ben carson has said he will not be joining the administration as surgeon general despite rumors that he was being considered for the role, michael. many more appointments to come. >> we will be watching. thanks. for the first time president biden has given ukraine the green light to use powerful american long-range missiles for strikes inside russia. the weapons known as the army tactical missile system can travel about 190 miles, which could help stop russian forces from attacking ukrainian cities. the move comes as russia deploys thousands of north korean troops along ukraine's northern border to try to reclaim territory seized by ukrainian forces. it also follows the election victory of donald trump who's vowed to cut support to ukraine. cbs' chris livesay reports. by the eerie wail of air raid sirens, then drones and missiles that were intercepted and those that were not. russia released 120 missiles and 90 drones overnight in what ukrainian officials are calling the largest attack since the summer. "it was terrifying," sobs this woman. "we panicked." the strikes targeted energy facilities across the country. at least nine people were killed with power outages plunging entire regions into darkness in the biting cold. after nearly 1,000 days of fighting, an exasperated ukrainian president said this weekend the war will certainly end sooner once the oval office sees the return of donald trump. the american president-elect has long lamented the tens of billions of aid since the full scale invasion in 2022 and

repeatedly claimed that he could end the fighting. >> i believe i will be able to make a deal between president putin and president zelenskyy quite quickly. >> reporter: desperate for details about how trump plans to achieve that, volodymyr zelenskyy said, "i will only take seriously a conversation with the president of the united states once he's inaugurated. until then, he can't put a stop to anything." chris livesay, cbs news, rome. president biden is continuing his six-day visit to south america. he arrived in rio last night for the start of the g20 summit, and it's likely to be his final major international summit before leaving office. biden also became the first sitting president to visit the amazon rainforest where he saw the effects of deforestation. speaking in brazil, he said the fight against climate change has been a defining cause of his administration. he also alluded to what president-elect donald trump might do in the fight to protect the environment.

>> some may seek to deny or delay the clean energy revolution that's under way in america. but nobody, nobody can reverse it. nobody. not when so many people regardless of party or politics are enjoying its benefits. >> and before arriving in brazil, biden met with chinese president xi jinping at the apec summit in peru. xi said he's ready to work with the incoming trump administration. two people were killed and ten others wounded in two separate shootings along a parade route packed with thousands of people in new orleans. in the first shooting yesterday, nine people were taken to hospitals in unknown condition. about 45 minutes later, two people were killed and another person was injured in a shooting about half a mile away. there's no word if the incidents are related. police haven't announced any arrests. well, hundreds of wildfires continue to burn in the northeast amid dry, windy conditions.

more than 5,000-acre jennings creek wildfire along the new york-new jersey border is now about 90% contained. firefighters say a voluntary evacuation in the village of warwick, new york, helped them protect more than 160 homes. the new york city fire department is creating its first-ever brush fire task force to respond to a historic number of brush fires. bags of organic whole and baby carrots are being recalled across the country after a deadly e. coli outbreak. the cdc says one person has died, and at least 39 others sickened in 18 states after eating carrots sold by grimmway farms in california. they were sold under multiple brand names in several large grocery store chains including target, whole foods, trader joe's, and walmart. the carrots have been pulled from shelves, but the cdc is warning consumers to throw away any they may have in their fridge. get ready for a record-breaking number of people traveling for the thanksgiving holiday. aaa says nearly 80 million

americans will travel 50 miles or more from the tuesday before thanksgiving to the monday afterwards. that's an increase of almost two million people over last year. the vast majority will be driving, and they'll find gas prices about 25 cents a gallon cheaper than last year. airlines for america projects a record for air travel, as well, with more than 31 million passengers on u.s. airlines. it says the busiest days to fly are the wednesday before thanksgiving and sunday after the holiday. crash landing. a small plane goes down in a vehicles. and a mother's anguish after she says her young son was traumatized in an alleged hanging incident. traumatized in an alleged hanging incident. finals. no one on the ground was hurt, but two people from the plane were reported to be in critical condition. races were paused for a while but resumed later. a maryland mom says her son was the victim of an alleged hanging incident, and a disturbing march in ohio. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the columbus dispatch" reports ohio governor mike dewine and other leaders condemned a neo-nazi march in the state capital. police responded saturday to a report of about a dozen people wearing all black with red face masks carrying flags with swastikas and shouting racial slurs. one of the people used pepper spray or mace on a passerby. the group left when officers arrived. no one was arrested. the "chicago tribune" says the justice department is demanding records from an illinois sheriff's office related to the deadly shooting of sonya massey by a deputy. massey, who's black, was shot in her springfield home in july when deputies responded to her

911 call reporting a possible prowler. she was shot three times during a confrontation with a white deputy from sangamon county, sean grayson. he was later fired and charged with murder. the justice department is investigating how authorities in the county treat black people and also people with behavioral disabilities. and "the washington post" says the charles county, maryland, sheriff's office is investigating an alleged hanging incident in an elementary school. the mother of a second grader says she received a call from the school friday telling her that her son was choking and had to be rushed to a hospital. she shared a photo of her 7-year-old son lying in a hospital bed. she claims her son was hung by a fourth grader in a school bathroom. in a letter to parents, the school's principal said one student was unable to free himself after his jacket got caught on a stall door hook while horseplaying with another student. the principal said the other student left to get help. the mother who does not want to be identified says it was not horseplay.

escaped pig through a tacoma neighborhood. after a while, the runaway pig nicknamed notorious p-i-g was safely captured and taken to a nearby ranch. police didn't say where the pig escaped from. all right. big cutbacks at boeing, while mcdonald's is spending big. here's matt pieper with today's cbs "moneywatch." >> reporter: stocks fell to their worst loss since election day as the rally from the election and a cut to interest rates by the federal reserve kept fading. the dow lost 305, income down -- nasdaq down 427, s&p losing 78 points. mcdonald's says it's investing $100 million to accelerate recovery and support the most heavily impacted franchisees. it's all after an e. coli outbreak tied to onions on the fast food giant's quarter pounder hamburgers. the cdc has said that slivered onions were the likely source of the e. coli. the outbreak has sickened more than 100 people in 14 states as of last week, and one man died.

it won't be a great holiday season for hundreds of boeing employees who are getting pink slips. the layoff notices went to more than 400 members of its professional aerospace labor union, part of thousands of cuts planned as the company struggles to recover from financial trouble as well as an eight-week strike by its machinists union. legal team proposed a $50 million bail proposal which was denied. prosecutors say combs began breaking rules almost as soon as he was detained in september. authorities are investigating whether burglaries at the homes of high-profile nba and nfl athletes could be related. the latest victim, milwaukee bucks star bobby portis. he posted video that he says shows two men breaking into his wisconsin home this month while he was playing in a game. portis is asking for the public's help getting his possessions back. >> i appreciate the love and support you've shown me regarding the home invasion. i am now offering a 40k cash reward for information and tips that leads to the return of any stolen items. >> this follows the burglaries at the homes of kansas city chiefs quarterback patrick mahomes and travis kelce last month. the home of mike conley jr. happened last september.
