told the house ethics committee regarding allegations of sexual misconduct and drug use, all of which gaetz denies. and the president-elect confirmed he'll deploy the u.s. military on american soil to achieve his long-promised immigration crackdown that will test his powers as commander in chief. cbs's jarred hill is here with the details. good morning. >> good morning. trump's pick for attorney general could test his sway over the senate. a lawyer for two women who testified before the house ethics committee says the panel has matt gaetz venmo and paypal transactions allegedly showing payments for sex. an official with trump's transition calls the claims baseless. president-elect donald trump is on a fast track to staff his administration. according to sources, he's aiming to announce all cabinet level picks by thanksgiving. monday trump named former wisconsin congressman turned fox business host sean duffy to be secretary of transportation. meanwhile, controversy over matt

gaetz. >> this happened and it's real. >> reporter: attorney joel leppard said two of his clients told the house ethics committee that they were paid to have sex with gaetz in 2017. one woman testified she witnessed gaetz having sex with a minor. >> she arrived at the party. she had sex with representative gaetz within minutes of her arrival. later on when she was walking out to the pool area she observed to her right representative gaetz having sex with her friend who was 17 at the time. a doj probe ended with no charges being filed. gaetz has denied any wrongdoing. >> it is a horrible allegation and it is a lie. >> reporter: two sources say the house ethics committee is set to meet tomorrow. >> got a bipartisan group of senators who have asked to see it. it's obviously relevant to the votes they'll take with respect to confirmation. >> i think it would be a bad press department for us to set. >> reporter: also this morning, a source close to the transition

tells cbs news trump's team is considering executive orders in the first days of his administration to make sure his mass deportation plan can withstand any legal challenges. and they're looking at the supreme court ruling upholding the travel ban from his first term as precedent. meanwhile, president-elect trump confirmed he plans to declare a national emergency regarding the state of immigration. this could let him redirect money towards mass deportations, michael. this could also allow the military to legally take a more active role at the southern border to help with all of this. >> all right. jarred hill, thanks for joining us. a new york judge is expected to rule today on whether to throw out president-elect trump's conviction in his hush money case. trump was found guilty earlier this year on 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up payments to former porn star stormy daniels ahead of the 2016 election. trump's lawyers want the case dismissed so he can focus on being president again and in light of the supreme court's recent ruling on presidential

immunity. prosecutors are weighing how to proceed. sentencing had been set for next week. is turning overseas. the kremlin issuing a warning saying president biden is adding fuel to the fire by allowing ukraine to use long-range u.s. missiles that can strike targets inside russia. one russian lawmaker said firing them over the border could lead to world war iii. holly williams reports from ukraine. >> reporter: ukraine's been using american supplied attackems against russian forces since last year. some of the missiles have a range of close to 200 miles. but before now the u.s. had refused the ukrainian's permission to hit targets inside russia concerned about an escalation in the conflict. colonel maxim balangoura hinted last month about what the ukrainians could attack with the powerful u.s. weapons. if the u.s. would allow you to

use attackems to hit russia, what difference would that make? if the russians don't have any ammunition or any planes, then manpower won't matter, he told us. in recent months russian forces have been gaining ground and targeting ukraine cities with deadly glide bombs, soviet era ammunition retrofitted with wings and gps. last month we witnessed the aftermath of a small glide bomb in this residential neighborhood. you can see the devastation that it's wreaked. it's literally ripped the front off the building. and now russia' military been bolstered by more than 10,000 north korean soldiers. they may join an offensive to retake territory in kursk in southern rich shah, where ukraine launched an audacious attack in august. in september vladimir putin said if the u.s. allowed ukraine be to use attackems inbe side his

country, it would mean that america and russia are at war. some ukrainians fear that president-elect donald trump could try to pressure their government into negotiating with russia. if that happens, using the attackems now could give ukraine a better bargaining position. holly williams, cbs news, lviv, ukraine. back here at home, a terrifying stabbing spree in manhattan leaves three people dead in random attacks and a suspect charged with three counts of murder. surveillance video captured the suspect pulling what looks like a knife out of a bag before he allegedly went on the attack. authorities say he first fatally stabbed a construction worker and two hours later he attacked another man fishing and 30 minutes later he allegedly stabbed a woman near the united nations. police say the homeless man was captured hours later with blood on his clothes and two kitchen knives. the suspect has history of

arrests and struggles with mental health. wildfires continue to burn in the northeast including a new one in southern new jersey. the big rusty wildfire in hainesport has grown to 40 acres. 20% contained. the fire threatened 20 structures but none are in danger now. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. there have been hundreds of wildfires in the northeast fueled by gusty winds and dry conditions from a prolonged drought. and new york city issued its first drought warning in more than 20 years. people are being asked to voluntarily conserve water. the city says it will wash buses and subway cars less often and it's also going to start using an aqua duct that was taken out of service for drinking water. drought warnings have been issued in 15 counties in new york state. reservoir levels are down to 60%. and nearly two months after hurricane helene tore through asheville, north carolina, it's safe to use the water there again. the city lifted its boil water advisory yesterday.

las vegas review journal reports the relatives of a man killed by police are calling for the officer who shot him to be fired and arrested. >> hey, drop the knife. drop the knife. >> now that police body cam video shows officer alexander bookman shooting brandon durham last week after durham called 911 to report a break-in at his house. when officers arrived he was struggling with a woman. after yelling drop the knife, bookman opened fire. durham fell to the ground and the officer fired five more times. the woman who authorities say had a relationship faces multiple charges. she wanted cops to kill her. the associated press says a wyoming judge struck down the state's ban on abortion and its first in the nation ban on the use of pills to end pregnancies. yesterday the judge ruled the laws violate women's rights under the state constitution. the same judge had earlier

issued orders blocking the laws from taking effect. they were challenged by four women, two obstetricians and two nonprofit organizations who claim the ban stood to harm their health, well-being and livelihoods. and "the new york times" says the texas board of education is expected to vote this week on whether to allow elementary schools to incorporate lessons from the bible. a public hearing was held yesterday on the plan to give public schools from kindergarten through fifth grade the option to use the state sponsored curriculum. while it is optional, school districts would receive additional funding if they use it. the government shouldn't promote christianity. >> they promote particular religious views over others and in doing so they violate parents' rights to determine the religious upbringing of their children. >> attacking these materials merely because of their academic study of the bible, denying students the freedom to learn and create a learning environment that is hostile to christianity and religion.

spirit airlines in dire financial trouble. here's shanelle kaul with today's "moneywatch." >> u.s. stocks were mixed on monday with investors downsizing their expectations for another rate cut. the dow lost 55 points. the nasdaq gained 111. and the s&p 500 was up 23 points. spirit airlines, the nation's largest discount airline, has filed for bankruptcy protection. spirit has had at least two failed merger attempts in recent years as it struggled to rebound from the covid-19 pandemic. the airline said it expects to continue operating normally during the bankruptcy process. a big update coming to safety tests for vehicles. starting with 2026 models, government regulators will be adding features like blind spot warnings and pedestrian detection to vehicle crash ratings. the changes are part of new requirements agreed to by congress in the 2021 bipartisan

a piece of sheet metal fell from the roof of the dallas cowboys home stadium several hours before the start of last night's game against the houston texans. now thankfully it happened while at&t stadium was mostly empty as the retractible portion of the roof was being opened for the first time since 2022. officials say strong winds contributed to the incident. the texans beat the cowboys 34-10. arthur frommer who changed the industry has died. he began writing books on how to travel on a budget when he was serving in the u.s. army in europe in the 1950s. he then self-published the blockbuster "europe on $5 a day" in 1957 and went on to publish some of the best known books in the industry. he was 95. john stamos supporting fellow "full house" co-star dave coulier who revealed his cancer
