gunpowder. yeah, i knew it was real. then the day in 2017, when west liberty-salem school joined the list of schools that have experienced a shooting. >> so these are where bullets hit the only visible scars left are holes in this bathroom wall from gunshots. but the trauma still lingers. you had kids jumping out of windows thinking they might die. >> later on. they got the good news that nobody died. but their brain had already experienced that traumatic experience. >> when you came, what did you see in that bathroom principles andy mcgill and greg johnson rushed to help a student who had been shot twice, just feet away was the shooter a student they knew well? >> i said his name and he just said, i'm sorry, coach, and i asked him, i need you to put the gun down. and he and he did. >> following the shooting, the pair led the drive to implement new security measures, including bulletproof glass, better window exits and a school resource officer. but they chose not to arm any staff or teachers. when you were in that bathroom, talking to the shooter was there any moment

you wished you had a gun no no. about 50 miles south, just outside dayton, the mad river local school district has given guns to about 20 of its teachers, whose identities are kept confidential. we spoke with one of those teachers keeping her in shadow as part of the district's safety measures. if there's a school shooter, it could be a student that you know. oh, absolutely. >> at that point in time, that student's not my student. they are now a murderer and i am stopping a threat and that's to save other lives across the u.s.. >> 15 states allow school personnel to carry guns on campus in the last year, the number of school districts in ohio with armed staff quadrupled, with 14% of the state's districts now participating. chad ryan is the superintendent at mad river and the only armed member of the staff whose identity is public. so where is your firearm so

mine is actually housed right here in my cabinet so i punch in a code. it was his idea to have guns near teachers in a safe rather than on them a strategy to prevent unauthorized access. >> so typically there's a live round in the chamber. we have to be prepared, he says. >> guns in the classroom serve as a measure of assistance for their single resource officer across eight schools in the district there's no way our police can get there in time to stop it, and that's why we chose to go down that path. luckily, he says, they've never had a student bring a gun to their campuses, and most parents here are grateful for this layer of protection. some people oppose the idea of armed staff having a gun in a classroom. what would you say to them? >> i understand why they have that belief and i understand their concerns with guns i had similar concerns before i was comfortable with guns. it's just a tool to protect yourself or to protect other people. >> are you willing to die for your job?

hour, the king of clay has relinquished his crown. tennis legend rafael nadal retired from professional tennis this week following a final match that he lost. afterwards, the 22 time grand slam champion from spain was honored. cbs's adriana diaz has more on this emotional goodbye reporter. >> yeah rafael nadal was emotional before stepping onto the court for what would be the final match of his record smashing career at the davis cup tuesday. >> what an effort that was. nadal is beaten the tennis great bid farewell with deafening cheers from the stands in his native spain. i just want to be remembered as a good person and a kid that follow their dreams and achieved more than what i ever dreamed nadal turned pro at just 14 and two days after his 19th birthday, he captured his

>> hello and thanks so much for staying up with us. i'm shanelle kaul in new york and here are the top stories on cbs news roundup. the house ethics committee votes along party lines to keep its investigation of matt gaetz out of the public eye. an undocumented migrant is found guilty in the brutal murder of a young woman in georgia. and the latest on the deadly bomb cyclone that's destroyed homes and businesses and left hundreds of thousands in the dark. republicans on the house ethics committee blocked the release of their year long investigation into alleged sexual misdeeds by matt gaetz. president elect donald trump's pick for attorney general. the committee will meet again in two weeks to reconsider this decision. senators from both parties said they want to see

the gaetz report that reportedly details sex parties, drug use, venmo payments and an underage girl. the former congressman was back on capitol hill trying to win over skeptical members of his own party. cbs's nikole killion has more. >> former florida republican congressman matt gaetz and vice president-elect jd vance huddled throughout the day in the capitol meeting with more than half a dozen gop senators about his embattled selection for attorney general. >> senators have been giving me a lot of good advice. i'm looking forward to a hearing. folks have been very supportive. they've been saying we're going to get a fair process. so it's a great day of momentum for the trump-vance administration. >> tennessee republican senator marsha blackburn met gaetz today. >> i asked matt what his expectation was, and he wants to be able to have a hearing. he says he will answer any question that anyone asks him. >> gaetz was under investigation by the house ethics committee for allegations

wednesday, the panel met behind closed doors and did not reach a consensus to release its report. >> have you spoken to matt gaetz at all? has he had a chance to look at this report? >> i've had no conversation with mr. gates. >> gates is alleged to have attended 10 to 15 sex parties and had sex with a 17 year old minor who was interviewed by the committee. cbs news has also learned venmo records obtained by house investigators show gaetz paid two women more than $10,000 in 27 payments. gaetz has denied any wrongdoing. >> do you have any concerns about the allegations that are out there about him? >> well, of course, i said from the beginning that i was shocked by the nomination given the many allegations. >> many senators say they still want to see the panel's findings. >> the person in question is aspiring to the highest level of law enforcement in the united states of america. how can he conceal this report from the american public? >> senate judiciary chair dick

durbin has asked the fbi for its file of gaetz, stemming from a now closed sex trafficking investigation and house democrats have introduced a pair of resolutions to try to force the ethics committee to release their report on gaetz nikole killion. >> cbs news capitol hill in georgia, the verdict was swift, and the sentence was the max. >> in the murder trial of a venezuelan migrant. a judge found 26 year old jose ibarra guilty on all counts and sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole. ibarra entered the country illegally, and the murder of laken riley fueled the heated debate over the southern border during the race for president. manuel bojorquez was in the courthouse when the verdict came down. >> count one. malice murder. i find the defendant guilty. >> sobbing. could be heard in the courtroom as the judge found jose ibarra guilty on all ten counts. >> count three. felony murder.

ran together. >> i live with excruciating guilt every day that i was not accompanying laken on this run, and that it was her and not me. >> the prosecutor then played the police body cam video of the moment her family was told she was dead. she let riley have the last word in her closing argument, saying the fight she put up left dna evidence implicating ibarra. >> she scratched him. she marked him she marked him for everyone to see she marked him for you to see. >> the case became a flashpoint in the debate over border security and illegal immigration. during the presidential campaign. ibarra is an undocumented immigrant. in a statement today, president-elect trump said although the pain and heartbreak will last forever, hopefully this can help bring some peace and closure to her wonderful family. because the defense decided to forego a trial by jury, the judge was the sole decider in this case and he did it quickly, coming

back with that guilty verdict less than 30 minutes after closing arguments. manuel bojorquez, cbs news, athens, georgia. >> people in the pacific northwest are still cleaning up after a deadly bomb cyclone of rain, snow and hurricane force winds tore through the region. more foul weather is forecast over the next day, and a half, expected to bring flash floods and up to a foot of rain carter evans reports from outside seattle in the pacific northwest, powerful winds turn trees into lethal projectiles. >> huge limbs came crashing down on cars and busses overnight. they also killed at least two people in the seattle area, including a woman who was struck by this tree inside her home. her husband quickly called 911. >> i just had a tree hit my house and i think it it may have fallen on my wife. >> heather wong is with the bellevue fire department, so she was showering at the time. >> she was in the shower at the

just as thanksgiving travel gets underway, american airlines is rolling out a new program nationally intended to stop passengers crowding the gate. >> it happens a moment of flight begins boarding cbs's kris van cleave shows us this novel approach that calls people out if they're trying to board before it's their turn oh, there we have a new system. >> not so fast that is the sound of someone trying to board when it's not their turn. >> when i say group eight, then you can come up okay. >> american airlines has been testing a new boarding system in tucson and two other airports those fliers tried to board just a little early and are asked to wait until their boarding group is called oh, you're in group six. senior vice president julie roth says the airline is seeing results. >> it has improved the whole boarding process. so you see less crowding at the gate. >> american will now add the system to 100 airports ahead of

cbs news los angeles many americans have already started food shopping and meal prep for thanksgiving. >> the american farm bureau federation says this year, a classic feast will cost you less than it did last year. cbs's danya bacchus breaks down the numbers. >> brenda holloway is starting to shop for her thanksgiving day spread at the top of her grocery list prices. >> it's kind of stressful because you got to figure out, okay, should i choose this item with this pricing or should i not? because, you know, you have other bills. >> there is some good news. the american farm bureau federation says a classic thanksgiving meal for ten with a 16 pound turkey sides and dessert cost just over $58. this year. that's down 5% from 2023. >> we've seen a decline in the cost of this thanksgiving meal for two consecutive years economist barrett nelson says the turkey is the biggest reason why prices are down
