this is "cbs news mornings." torrential rain, hurricane-force winds, and blizzard conditions. a historic bomb cyclone is slamming the pacific northwest leaving death and destruction in its wake. breaking up google. the justice department is pushing for the tech giant to sell off its popular web browser. a move that could reshape internet searches. first, under wraps. republicans on the house ethics panel vote to block the release of a report on matt gaetz, donald trump's pick for attorney general, as the former congressman returns to the hill. good morning. i'm michael george. matt gaetz is fighting to win over support for his nomination as allegations he paid an underage girl for sex continued to follow him. he's just one of four of donald trump's cabinet picks who have faced sexual misconduct accusations. this morning we're getting a first look at a police report involving a sexual assault

accusation against pete hegseth, trump's choice for defense secretary. jarred hill has the latest. what did we learn in this new police report? >> so according to this report, trump's now pick for defense secretary, pete hegseth, the investigation started with a woman who went to a california hospital requesting a sexual assault exam after a night with hegseth in 2017. she says he took her phone and blocked his hotel room door when she tried to leave after a night of drinking. he says, though, that the encounter was completely consensual. lawmakers aren't releasing anything yet about their probe into trump's pick for secretary of state. >> it was a great day. >> reporter: matt gaetz back on capitol hill wednesday. president-elect donald trump's pick for attorney general flanked by trump's incoming vice president, j.d. vance, met privately with gop senators who will be crucial to gaetz's confirmation. >> very supportive, saying we'll get a fair process. >> reporter: the committee spoke about allegations of sexual misconduct against the florida congressman.

>> we did agree that we would reconvene as a committee on december 5th to consider the matter. >> reporter: trump said he would not reconsider nominating gaetz who is alleged to have attended ten to 15 sex parties and had sex with a 17-year-old. that minor was interviewed by the house committee. cbs news has learned venmo records obtained by house investigators show gaetz paid two women more than $10,000 in 27 payments. gaetz has denied any wrongdoing. senators from both parties say they want to see the report ahead of confirmation. >> how could he conceal this report from the american public? >> either way that information is going to be part of the process. >> reporter: trump has chosen his former acting attorney general, matt whitaker, for u.s. ambassador to nato, and two sources familiar with the transition tell cbs news trump is expected to tap his former director of the office of management and budget, russell vought, to head the agency

her home taking a shower. in northern california, blizzard-like conditions shut down parts of the busy i-5 freeway leaving hundreds of trucks stranded. forecasters are calling for an additional five to ten inches of rain in northern california, and another one to three get of snow in the mountains. now to the guilty verdict in the murder of georgia nursing student laken riley. a judge convicted jose ibarra, a venezuelan migrant who entered the country illegally, on all counts and sentenced him to life in prison after heartbreaking testimony from riley's family and friends. cbs' manuel bojorquez reports from the courthouse in athens, georgia. count one, malice murder, we find the defendant guilty. >> reporter: sobbing could be heard in the courtroom as the judge found jose ibarra guilty on all ten counts. >> count three, felony murder, i find the defendant guilty. >> reporter: after the verdict, laken riley's family and friends addressed the court. her mother spoke first. >> on that horrific day my

played the police body cam video of the moment her family was told she was dead. she let riley have the last word in her closing argument saying the fight she put up left dna evidence implicating ibarra. >> she scratched him. she marked him. she marked him for everyone to see. she marked him for you to see. >> reporter: the case became a flashpoint in the debate over border security and illegal immigration during the presidential campaign. ibarra is an undocumented immigrant. in a statement, president-elect donald trump said, "although the pain and heartbreak will last forever, hopefully this can help bring some peace and closure to her wonderful family." because the defense decided to forego a trial by jury, the judge was the sole decider in this case. and he did it quickly, coming back with that guilty verdict less than 30 minutes after closing arguments. manuel bojorquez, cbs news, athens, georgia. the justice department is asking a federal judge to impose punishments on google, including

forcing it to sell its popular chrome web browser. the proposed breakup is part of a document filed aimed at preventing the company from continuing to squash its competition. the same judge ruled earlier that google monopolized the online search browser over the past decade. it's not sure how president-elect donald trump will handle the case weather takes office next year. on capitol hill, house speaker mike johnson is making it official. banning transgender men and women from using single-sex restrooms or locker rooms that correspond with their identity. the decision coming just weeks before the first elected transgender member of congress is sworn into office. cbs' scott macfarlane reports from the hill. >> reporter: u.s. house speaker mike johnson took aim at assembly sarah mcbride, the first-ever transgender member elected to congress. with his decision to bar transgender people from using those capitol complex bathrooms

parole board hearing. it was the first parole hearing for smith who's serving a life sentence. she's now eligible for a parole hearing every two years. members of smith's family including the boys' father asked the board to deny parole. "the idaho statesman" says a judge ruled the man accused of killing four university of idaho students can face the death penalty if convicted. authorities tried to have it thrown out. prosecutors will seek the death penalty if a jury finds kohberger guilty. he faces charges from the stabbing deaths of the students in 2022. "the hill" says a florida man is under arrest accused in a plot to bomb the new york stock exchange this week in order to, quote, reset the u.s. government. the fbi says it began investigating harun abdul malik yener in february based on a tip he was storing bomb-making designs in an unlocked storage unit. authorities found sketches and
