2:07 am
now at 11:00, a bomb cyclone hits the bay area as rivers start to flow. >> we're good. >> and highways fill up. >> i'm about eight inches above right now, and it feels like you're on a houseboat. >> homes threatened by water. the businesses doing what they can to keep water out. >> the next two restaurants are there already. >> and some with nowhere to go. this has felt like a long week. for days, it's been rinse and repeat. the storm last been hitting the north bay hard is making their presence felt tonight. it had is what it looked like in oakland, a similar story across san francisco just over an hour ago. this huge tree came crashing down not far from our television station. parts of the north bay are
2:08 am
dealing with the landslides earlier tonight. shut down outside napa. i'm sara donchey. we have been talking about it weather system for days. we'll get to paul with the forecast in a minute. but first, our andrea nakano spent the day checking out the troubled spot where people are dealing with landslides and road closures. >> reporter: a worker stopped us earlier tonight to warn us how deep this water is and how fast they're moving across highway 121. this constant rain has taken its toll on the roads and the hillsides of the north bay. >> reporter: just around 2:00 on friday afternoon, the hillside gave way for nearly four hours. the public works
2:09 am
superintendent had a unique way to describe the debris flow. >> chocolate milk, like chocolate pudding. >> reporter: crews removed the mud before opening up the road. the hillside being prepped to become another vineyard. >> there was no rocks in the material. it was a vineyard that was being installed to have all the nice soil that they had just reworked. >> reporter: it wasn't expected to reach flood stage, but the gates were closed after the river did reach a trigger point of 20 feet. highway 121 remains closed as they overturned on the roadway. some of the surrounding streets have been closed as well. >> the floods right here and the trees and the branches overnight. it's been tight. >> reporter: and they say he
2:10 am
has been making this commute for about 30 years, seeing the share of bad storms, and he knows all about highway 121 shutting down. >> when you drive back and forth from work to santa rosa in napa, it has been very crazy. >> reporter: there is no estimated time of reopening highway 121. the hope is we get enough break from the rain to be able to open this road soon again. >> okay, you've got one show left to do. this man has been very busy today. -happening pretty much in almost all the bay area all day long. >> all of us have been covering this evening. it's finally starting to taper off, but it is still raining across most of the bay area. a look at first alert doppler. the heaviest rain is working into the santa clara valley. we'll go north to south because they will be seeing the bankrupt of this for most of the duration of the
2:11 am
storm system. more gaps, but there are still showers out there, just adding a little bit more moisture to the saturated soils, light shower activity per hour. not enough to cause any flooding issues. the rain has slacked off in intensity across the city and across oakland. on the other side, still some heavier downpours making their way into alameda county. to the east of the santa clara valley, coming down right now in san jose picking up a quarter of an inch of rain in the past couple of hours. waiting for the rain to arrive. it's here. the rain has started to taper off. heavier downpours making their way closer to morgan hill. the fire hose aimed close enough through the rest of tonight. adding up to even more on top of what has
2:12 am
accumulated is now a typo. 22 inches of rain with that storm in occidental since everything started 72 hours ago. the wettest 72-hour stretch, 122 years of recordkeeping. and san francisco is approaching four inches of rain, most of which fell today. now over half an inch as they will continue to fall in those communities. throughout the weekend, we will see changes taking place. the break of action will kick in midday tomorrow. morning showers, mostly a dry break during the afternoon. it will be heading our way sunday afternoon and evening. we will track that in a few minutes. >> thank you so much. as paul mentioned, san francisco got a taste of the heavier rain as you would see that illustrated in the rain totals, the video of it if you were driving into the city on 280, you might have been better
2:13 am
off with the kayak this afternoon. it was not much better getting onto the embarcadero, ponding up on the street all the way to the ferry building. that water led to issues in the mission. and to protect his property. >> i'm soaked right now. i have changed my shirt and everything. without it, the whole street would be flooded right now. >> reporter: all of a sudden he noticed water rising outside. >> water was coming over the curb already. they flooded or they started to flood. the next two restaurants had water there already. >> reporter: two years ago during another big storm, this entire block flooded with feet of water. he told me he was
2:14 am
determined to not let that happen again, so he and some of his employees grabbed brooms and anything else they could get their hand on and ran towards the flooding. >> these two dreams right here, we literally couldn't see them. and we were just blindly scraping, just scraping, trying to get it unclogged until we could see the little tornado start. >> reporter: they say they were able to unclog the drain just in time to stop that water from flooding his restaurant. it took about 30 minutes for them to fully recede. while he's happy they were able to avoid another crisis, he told me he wishes the city would have been monitoring this area, so he and his employees department b have to fix it on their own. >> and then last year the city was like high alert. they would park their trucks out here and make sure everything would happen. in two years, they forgot about us again and same
2:15 am
thing happened. >> reporter: from now on when it rains, he's going to monitor the drain himself and step in any time he sees them getting clogged. he recommends other areas who will deal with flooding to do the same. >> if you're out on the street with anybody, and you see that drain overflooding, i know if you wait for the city, they will come or get somebody that can just to save everybody headaches. >> people in the east bay decided to try to brave the elements. take a look at this video of street flooding it in oakland at west grand avenue in peralta. some of the people were not so lucky. in the lowest point, they would turn into a creek there. they would try to get through it. most of them did not try and they turned around. >> there are two cars stuck. we're good. >> we do not want to go through that. i don't want my engine to die at all. >> everybody making a u-turn. we're about to do the same thing. >> that's the wise approach. not too long ago, crews would
2:16 am
show up to try to pump out all the water from that intersection. it was slightly less soggy on the peninsula. our crews said the heavy rain and wind was off and on. jerry lee runs the highway 92 succulent shop at half moon bay and the past couple of months have given her the case of weather whiplash. >> this year, they have taken us by a little surprise because it was nice weather through october and all the way through the beginning half of like november. >> we'll be tracking the weather through the weekend and on air on kpix.com, streaming on cbs news bay area. dealing with power problems in the east bay. we'll update you on that. how some got creative when the lights went out in oakland. and plus growing concern along the russian river. they could have water breaching the banks. in a surprised visit by the pride of berkeley. they would stop by our station ahead of the big game.
2:18 am
so did the oven and the refrigerator that they led to a tough situation. >> and the power is affecting us a lot. my client is hungry, she's 90 years old. she's not able to eat. many of them were in oakland. a near disaster in butte county. two drivers and a dog were safe from the floodwaters it will. and a parking lot was under evacuation for sure. bringing a lot of snow to the sierra with several feet expected to fall in the coming days. chains are now required on i-80, probably not a surprise there. if you're planning to drive there, plan for delays. forecasting some areas will get as much as three feet of snow on tuesday. still a lot of people are heading to the slopes to take advantage of
2:19 am
that, which is always expected when they get a lot of snow like that. and to drive up times like these. >> the snow will still be there after it stops actively snowing, so be patient. it's tempting to take advantage of it. >> and i was going to say, driving into work today was challenging. >> and that is less than ideal for the evening shift. when the heaviest rain was falling this afternoon, it was kind of gross out there. a look at the big picture here. bringing them up onto the floor. and from kind of larger perspectives, that it is still dominating our weather. we'll be seeing it as they would head into the weekend as well. and that swirl of clouds off the coast of the pacific northwest is the heart of the storm system is hanging out there. and the atmospheric river is directing towards us
2:20 am
that it will be drifting. and moving down the coast, kind of losing the intensity over the next 24 hours. and rain showers in the north bay, adding insult to injury. and over the past couple of days, we are seeing the light to moderate rain showers, the heaviest downpours moving out of the trivalley. bringing some labels on the map here, where you can see what we're looking. and not as intensely as it was. even in the santa cruz mountains, the rain isn't falling as intensely, moving farther and farther to the south. a trend that will continue throughout the rest of tonight. and take a look at futurecast as we would
2:21 am
go through tonight and tomorrow. and the not necessarily going to stop, but it's going to wind down as we would head through the next several hours. a little break before the sun will come up on saturday, but it will be replaced by sunrise. this forecast model, i think overdoes the intensity of the additional showers. and downpours, we are talking about light to moderate rain moving across the bay area on saturday. while we're going to be in a mostly dry break midday through saturday and through sunday, mostly dry, doesn't mean 100% dry. a few pop-up showers, and where else it will be in the north bay tomorrow afternoon. and things will quiet down. we're adding up the additional wave of rainfall. through the rest of tonight, probably a quarter of an inch or less. however, we're going to pile up more on top of that as the next wave moves in through sunday night into monday. beyond that, another round of lighter showers on tuesday. you total those up, and a quarter of an inch of
2:22 am
rain to potentially another two inches of rain on top of already saturated soils. the rain coming at us in waves. it won't be as torrential. should help us avoid any significant flooding, but we will keep an eye on things just in case. a couple minutes ago, the winter storm warning will continue all the way through 4:00 on tuesday. and anywhere from one to three feet of snow on the widespread basis, with some of the higher peaks that will pick up closer to four or five feet of snow traveling strongly on both u.s. 50 and on i-80 as we would head into the weekend. a look at your seven-day forecast. good news. we do have a drier trend kicking in the day before thanksgiving. some better travel weather on wednesday. that should stick around on thursday and friday, and i say that with a little intrepidation, because they are trying to break up rain for us on friday. and the long range data is going all over the place, where we are not convinced with the scenario and dry at this point. so fingers crossed where we could get
2:23 am
through all of thanksgiving weekend with the lack of rain that will be kind of nice for everybody traveling around. we could just use it at this point. >> we could use the break. sonoma county is one of the places that have not seen the break. we are keeping an eye on the russian river, which has been rising more and rising faster than expected. wilson walker spoke to people living there who say they have never seen anything like it. >> and put it here. >> and luckily i had a total rope i could get out of the water. >> reporter: it could mean a classic mercedes. and when it comes over the bank. then most of the water will be going through the flat lands.
2:24 am
>> reporter: and it is how fast it happened when we were here on tuesday, the river was sitting just over five and a half feet in the forecast at the time was for the storm system to push the river to about 25 feet that forecast has been exceeded. >> i went from six to now, i think it's close to 30. went from about six feet to i think approaching 30 feet right now. >> and the last predictive model i saw would be about 34. 35 feet is when we would receive moderate flooding here in the lower russian area. >> this is really sort of right about at the line where it starts to cause problems here. >> right. and it is right at that line. depending on what the rain system with the storm system does, whether it continues. i mean, it has led up a little bit in light rain right now, but they have not stopped raining at all. all that water from the higher elevations, they will need to flow here to the river. it does take some time here to get here. >> reporter: with the river
2:25 am
expected to stay below the critical mark of 35 feet, it means that the river itself isn't the top concern, it's all the creeks that will have to drain into it. >> this area here is the lowest elevation in guerneville. it's called submarine flats. >> reporter: locals can tell you exactly what happens when the river reaches certain marks, which basements will be flooded. >> everybody has a little routine. and mostly putting the cars up away, opening your garage door. securing your trash bins. >> reporter: and so it is not a particularly abnormal event to see the water this high, but off of two days worth of rain on the very first storm system of the year. >> it was only lucky that it is so early in the season because there is plenty of places for water to go right now. river wasn't full. creeks, they were completely dry when this storm started. and now. >> reporter: have you ever seen
2:26 am
anything like this? >> i don't think in that short amount of time that we have ever gotten that kind of rain between santa rosa and the coast. i mean we normally get a lot of rain, but not in that short period of time. up next, do you ever see anything like this in your office? more on the visit that everybody at the television station hyped up for game day. and in sports, a major injury for the 49ers could derail not just their game, but potentially their season. plus, warriors, they wanted to hand that game away on friday night and the nba cup. could they get that job done? stick around.
2:27 am
it has become a tradition in our newsroom, almost the story of the rivalry game itself. the golden bears marching band and cheerleaders paid us a last-minute visit. if you think they're loud, sitting in the stands, we could assure you they pack a punch indoors, even after they showed up to take part of the
2:28 am
celebration, kick off for 12:30 tomorrow from berkeley. were you there for this? >> i was not. i missed the excitement. >> there was no confusion as to whether you were or not. if you were even around the corner, you definitely heard them. >> yeah, i was not there. i do not have a headache. >> yeah. >> so it all goes in. i don't have a headache or an injury, but same can't be said for the 49ers. you thought their injury issues could not get worse? well now brock purdy and nick bosa out against green bay on sunday. and purdy, dealing with a sore shoulder. and under center against the packers. his first start as a niner, allen has started nine games in his career and the last coming in the 2021 season. what we know, purdy injured his shoulder against the seahawks last sunday. the team was fully hoping purdy would be able to start until this week when he was unable to throw at practice on thursday. >> when he started up thursday,
2:29 am
just surprised him, surprised us and how he felt. he had to shut him down. and they don't want to think of it. but the way they would respond this week, it's really up in the air this week. >> it's an opportunity for me to go out and play well, put our guys, you know, in a good position to win the game. and obviously we want brock back and healthy and all that, but for the time being, it's an opportunity for me. >> more on that in a moment. let's go here. kendrick lamar released a new album today, which is good news for the warriors. why? the last four times lamar has dropped an album, the dubs went on to win the nba title in the same year. pretty good track record. steph curry is looking reincarnated this year. and we're in new orleans, continuing their run towards the nba cup. first quarter, golden state up by one. off the pelicans, they miss. maybe trying out for the niners qb job, deep job for the bucket. and he scored 19 in the first half. jump to the third quarter. 71-69 new orleans. two
2:30 am
defenders will come at steph. he is still able to knock down the three to put them up by one. he finished with 19. 99-94 dubs. a little over five minutes left. andrew wiggins with the defender holding on to them to get that shot to go. draws the foul to make it an eight-point game. scoring a season high 30. now it's a two-point game. 12 seconds left. green turns it over on the inbounds with a chance to take the lead. trey murphy, no. green will get fouled on the rebound. the warriors will hang on, 112-108. they are 12-3, and they clinched a spot in the nba cup quarter finals. college football on the friday night. it was raining sideways in san jose. they hosted number 24, rebels leading 10-7. second quarter, spartans walker, just one of four completions in the rain to matthew coleman to run it in for a 33-yard touchdown. san jose takes a 14-10 lead. now
2:31 am
16-13 late quarter. jaden thomas burst through the whole score from 25 yards out to give unlv the lead. thomas ran for 135, rebels won 27-16. san jose state loses their second straight game to a ranked opponent, and they fall to 6-5. i want to go back to the niners. allen gets the start. he's 2-7 in his nine starts between denver and cincinnati. what is more concerning is this. come sunday, it will be 749 days since he threw a pass in the regular season. he took one snap this year. he kneeled the ball down in week one against the new york jets. they've got josh dobbs who is technically the qb3, the backup for this game, but it's concerning time for the san francisco 49er who is are in must-win mode. >> sometimes, you know, stars arise from situations like this. >> a guy named brock purdy did this. >> thank you, matt. the holiday travel season is about to kick off, but you're probably not going anywhere as far or intense as
2:32 am
2:33 am
to space? >> yeah, for how long? >> these days, it could be quite a lot longer than you would expect. six people did just that today, taking part in what is becoming a booming space tourism. this is the ninth human flight to space. the craft took off from west texas early it this morning. on board the shepherd rocket. the whole journey lasted ten minutes. in that time people would get to experience zero gravity. the company founded by jeff bezos test launched its craft back in october of 2016. they would end up leading to the development including the one that launched today. he's not the only one trying to cash in, dipping their toes into the space flight. and so far all of the results have been pretty positive. >> we still need to watch these closely because something can go wrong with these flights.
2:34 am
with these missions when something goes wrong, it's usually catastrophic. so far they've been flawless. >> yeah, i could have given that sound bite. so far, he's an expert, yeah. >> you don't want things to go wrong in space. but blue origin, has sent them through their new shepherd program as seen on the first flight, they would set you back $28 million. >> for ten minutes? >> while the most recent is going north of a million. so imagine how mad you would be if you were one of the $28 million people. >> per minute in weightlessness? >> nah. >> they would take a submarine down to the dynamic. what would you think about that? >> what if we built it out of wicker? >> yeah, the remote. >> i'm just going to count my $5 bill in peace. spend it in and out. have a good weekend. stay dry.
