way. also tonight, lawmen are investigating two north bay fatalities with links to the stormy weather. >> unfortunately, by the time we were here, the person did not make it. and there's no business like snow business up in the mountains. where thousands will come out of the slopes into the teeth of another storm system. but in the meantime, the sun came out today. real relief after days of record rainfall. there's more on the way, and that's why this young man is here to get straight to the forecast for the next couple of days. >> rain tomorrow. so and in some important locations too it's going to rain tomorrow in the north bay first in the morning, like in the 9:00 hour. good little cell is going to move across. what we want to do is take a look at that first. watch that far northwest corner going into sonoma county, red bullseye right there. that goes over the watershed of the russian river. can i show you where the flood warning is still in place? still in place for the russian river going through guerneville. allowed to expire at 4:00 a.m. at this
11:02 pm
point. it likely will expire. even when it does, just know late morning there's going to be enough rain with enough intensity in a short period of time that goes over that watershed that the level of the river will probably do a short little uptick again. be aware of that. that's one item. the other item, and in terms of that rain, let's watch it again. we saw this on the virtual map. there goes that one little cell. let's take it through the rest of the day really quickly. widespread rain throughout the day for just about everybody. it gets in, gets out. not going to be rain all day. like what we had for the last three days across much of the bay. just plan on that throughout the day tomorrow, breaks of blue sky, the sky will darken a little cell comes over, you'll get some rain. even if they have a little more intensity when they do come from the systems and the cells that you had for the last few days, they don't last as long. it's good news. there's more rain to talk about after tomorrow, by the way. believe

welcome back. up in the sierra chain controls have been in effect all day on 80, and we've seen dozens of big rigs and cars spun out or stranded in the snow. and more snow expected to come early next week after a little bit of a break this weekend. hunter is in placer county with what travelers are seeing if they're heading back home tonight. >> reporter: we've seen some brief breaks in the snowfall, but for the most part it has been coming down steady here in nyack. you mentioned those chain controls on 80, over on 50 in the myers area, traffic there was being held completely today by caltrans because they said it was simply too dangerous to drive on. too many spin outs and crashes. while people were ail to get up 80 today, they didn't come without having a bit of problems. for people hoping to enjoy this wintry wonderland, they had to first brace for stretches of treacherous travel. >> people don't know how to handle it. >> when you come over here,
11:13 pm
definitely you need to chains. >> reporter: chain control checkpoints slowed drives just before nyack. >> i wasn't expecting this. >> reporter: many thought they were in the clear, taking advantage of a brief break in a days long winter storm slamming the sierra. >> we're pretty good on chains, but there's no snow. it's a pain in the butt. >> reporter: it wouldn't be long for that rain to freeze over to ice. >> there was a tesla off the side of the road right after chain control. >> couple of instances of hairy moments, but thankfully we're all right. >> reporter: here's an example of why driving is so dicey right now for some. it's because of this rain-snow mix freezing over into a layer of ice, making those road conditions dangerous. >> i haven't had slushy conditions like this in a very long time, and i started to lose control. >> reporter: this is just the start of snow season in the sierra, but safety precautions remain the same no matter the storm. for those planning their own hike up the hill. >> go slow, please. your kids, your life, and someone else's
11:14 pm
kids depend on it. >> must bring back memories of your yosemite days. >> oh yeah, everything does, though, with the beauty of those scenes there. >> more on the way. >> we do. a couple of different waves. i want to start with the big picture, and then we're going to scale this down to get the best idea on how the next couple of days will go. it's going to be a unique setup for us. fist thing we're going to do is take a look at a quick review using the virtual set. this is tomorrow morning, 8:00, 9:00, good little cell shows up, opening round of rain in the north bay. then everyone gets in on the act. this is not an all-day rainmaker for us. we are not seeing showers that stay with us throughout the entirety of the day tomorrow. but they will h be on again, off again showers that come through. if you just take a view, a wide view on the map there, and what you've just seen is the play through of rain. i'm going to do it one more time so you can see how this goes. remember, it starts out in the north bay. so watch those showers that come in fist. that's like 8:00, 9:00
11:15 pm
in the morning. brief little period of noticeably heavy downpours of rain that come through when that happens, and then for the rest of the day it'll be on again, off again scattered showers. and that's what we looked at in the top of the newscast where we tried to get as specific as possible on those just to kind of see how the timing will may out for you on that. but what i'd like to do now is kind of get into a somewhat more overall big picture view to help explain why it'll be a bit interesting over the next few days. do you remember on wednesday when the storm started we were talking about the bomb cyclone that was one of the features that was responsible for this storm which delivered unprecedented amounts of rain. this is wednesday. see the bomb cyclone up there? that little spin. watch what happens up there. keep your eye on that. we're going to play this forward now from wednesday into today. and what you're going to see is another one developed. this gets us to friday when we got most of our rain. that was when we were really seeing bigger
11:16 pm
rainfall amounts coming into the bay. new bomb cyclone, old one over there. keep your eye on the old one, because that old one's coming back. we do a spin around, area of low pressure still out there. now look what it's doing. it's coming right for us. now we're looking at saturday night at 11:00, aka right now. that's it. san francisco longer anywhere near the intensity it was when it was the infamous bomb cyclone. but it's still an area of low pressure, and it's coming right for us. same one. and when we play it forward, watch what happens, line of rain shows up tomorrow. a little more high resolution on this, and you're going to understand why tomorrow we get our chance of rain. look at the spin up there come on shore. watch this trailing edge right here. brings another front through the bay. and because of that, this is tomorrow afternoon, more isolated showers are going to sweep across the bay as it does so. so they'll have a little more intensity to them than we saw from the original bands of rain for the last three days, because we're a little closer
11:17 pm
to the center of that low, there's a little more energy, an ability to develop larger storms with somewhat heavier timeframes of rain. but they'll move on. not like they're going to stall out and get stuck here. here's where things get even more interesting. this is monday. monday there is a second atmospheric river that's getting pulled into central california. not as intense as the one from the past three day, and not aimed at us. it's going to be going into central california. we're going the feel some of those showers on monday, and then on tuesday it really has it in for big sur. look at this. so widespread rain on a highway that's notoriously vulnerable to big rainfall events. look where we are, too far north from that one. where the forecast stands at this point, this one continues to go to our south. boy, is the sierra nevada going to get rained on. there's going to be a lot of snow in the southern sierra, a lot of rain. that brings us to tuesday and the model runs out of data.
11:18 pm
that thing is still going. it's going to stay to our south for the entire time. i don't have rain in our forecast for the holiday. let me prove it to you. we'll go to the seven-day forecast. i'll show you what that looks like as we take a look at tomorrow. tomorrow is the most significant day for us from a rainfall standpoint. in fact, let's start that over, say good-bye to that. and let's get rid of this -- got to say good-bye to that cool looking eye on the floor. makes it easier to read stuff. we've covered that for tomorrow. monday you still have leftover showers but fewer than sunday. i'm hopeful from here on out the focus for that next plume of moisture coming out of the pacific stays to the south of us and it'll be a story down in big sur. and southern california's finally going to get rain on this one. for us, thanksgiving is rain free. i know andrea is happy to hear that. >> super excited after the last three days. thank you, darren. coming up in sport, jumbo joe is back at the tank. a special ceremony to honor the shark great.
