30,000 thanksgiving pies? we'll show you coming up. >> announcer: this is the "cbs weekend news" from new york with jericka duncan. good evening and thank you for joining us this sunday night. president-elect donald trump is putting the finishing touches on his cabinet nominations, having chosen nearly a dozen to round out his incoming administration. our latest cbs news poll finds 59% of americans approve of how trump is handling the transition. cbs' nikole killion has that part of the story. >> reporter: good evening, jericka. president-elect trump has now filled most of his cabinet positions putting him on pace to do so by thanksgiving. at his mar-a-lago estate, president-elect donald trump solidified his cabinet with new picks for housing, labor,

agriculture, and funding, tapping scott bassett, who could be the first openly gay member to lead the board. the president-elect also tapped russell vought to reprise his role as white house budget director. and he selected a trio of doctors from federal health agencies, including david weldon, a vaccine skeptic, to head the cdc. >> it's about choice and getting rid of mandates. >> reporter: a cbs news poll finds most of trump's well-known designees have support like senator marco rubio to robert kennedy and pete hegseth and he faces allegations of sexual assault. >> it's frankly an insult and really troubling that mr. trump would nominate someone who's admitted that he's paid off a

victim who has claimed rape allegations against him. >> there was no crime committed and so that doesn't prevent pete from moving forward in this. >> reporter: some senators want fbi background checks on the nominees. >> why wouldn't we get these background checks for the most important job in the united states government? >> reporter: it's unclear the confirmation process could be delayed if those background checks aren't done. so far the trump transition has not signed an agreement with the fbi or white house to start the vetting process, but a spokesperson tells cbs news they continue to constructively engage with the biden-harris administration. jericka? >> thank you. turning now to the middle east. israeli planes carried out new airstrikes in beirut in response to a bali of more than 250 hezbollah rockets in the north. in the south hamas, is claiming an israeli woman taken hostage during the october 7th attacks was killed as a result of the fighting in gaza. there has been no official

confirmation from israel. at least 100 hostages are still unaccounted for. cbs's deborah patta is in east jerusalem with more. deborah? >> reporter: good evening. today marks one year since 105 hostages were released in a deal with hamas, but since then negotiations for the remaining more than 100 captives have repeatedly failed, as israel continues to pound northern gaza which has had virtually no aid for more than 40 days. nearly everyone is hungry in gaza. in the north, the u.n. says famine may already be underway, and in the south children are starving, often surviving on just one meager meal a day. disparate palestinians brave angry crowds just to get bread, but it is often a hopeless quest. sometimes i can't find any bread

just enough food to survive the winter. before the war began, 500 aid trucks entered gaza every day. it is a fraction of that now. jericka, with the quantity dropping to almost its lowest level for the entire war. >> debora patta in east jerusalem. thank you. well, if you're planning this thanksgiving week, you will not be alone. according toaaa, nearly 80 million americans will be on the move for the holiday. that number is a record and is nearly one quarter of the entire u.s. population. shanelle kaul, it doesn't look too packed there right now, does it? >> reporter: well, jericka, it's the calm before the storm here at newark airport. travellers here and across the country are hoping to beat that holiday rush. across the country, airports are

already teeming with travellers heading to thanksgiving destinations before peak travel days. >> i found it was cheaper tofuto fly on sunday. >> 2.8 million people are expected to fly on tuesday. similar next wednesday. but next sunday could set an all-time record, with nearly 3 million expected to pass through airport security nationwide. >> we are ready across airports to ensure passengers can complete the screen process within our established wait times of 30 minutes or less for non-pre-checked passengers and ten minutes or less for pre-check passengers. >> reporter: but most are expected to drive, over a million more than last year. >> it's important to know when th peak congestion periods will be, which aaa anticipates will be tuesday afternoon and wednesday afternoon between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. the key is to avoid those

afternoon rush hour commute times, when people heading home from work are mixing on the roads with travellers heading in and out of town. >> reporter: one bright spot, gas prices are lower compared to last year, and the average price per gallon could dip below $3 by thanksgiving. and millions of travellers from coast to coast will also have to contend with some dicey winter storms. those are already hitting the pacific northwest and northern california, expected to hit the rest of the country later this week. >> janelle c, thank you. speaking of weather, with details on what weather conditions you can expect over the next few days, let's check in with andrew kozak with more on that. >> good evening, jericka. a busy week ahead, the northwest more showers, thunderstorms, and snow in the higher elevations are still fueled by that

atmospheric river. from the sierra nevada this week with adiurnal two to three pete of snow and gusts of 55 miles per hour. we're going to see more of this tuesday and wednesday. tuesday we'll have mountain snow. pacific northwest will have scattered rain. for the mid section of the country, high pressure in place giving you a pretty decent forecast. tuesday is fine in the south but the northeast will deal with morning rain. wednesday is much better across the northeast, though cooler. snow north of chicago on wednesday, mountain snow but a bit of a clearout wednesday afternoon. the big day for thursday, less than two-thirds of the country looking pretty dry, but we will deal with rain and snow across the northwest. >> andrew kozak, thank you. here's something to look forward to this thanksgiving. your holiday fees should be more affordable than recent years. the average cost for a

thanksgiving dinner for 10 is expected to be $58, down 9% from the 2022 high of $64. cbs' kelly o'grady explains why the deals and tips on how to save. >> we're going to sell over half a million pounds of turkey this thanksgiving. >> reporter: blake leonard knows it's been a tough few years for shoppers and for the family business. >> we want to keep the customers happy, and we also are faced with rising labor costs and fuel and everything as well. >> reporter: but there is some relief. >> big picture, what are you seeing this thanksgiving? >> the great news is that for the first time in a couple of years we're really seeing prices remain steady versus last year, which is great. >> credit a major drop in turkey prices. a whole bird is $1.40 per point, down 16% from last year, and the lowest it's been in five years. while cranberries are up 16% and table wine up 2%, staples such as pumpkins and green beans are

down 9% or more, thanks in part to a healthier supply chain and store discounts. >> we have worked with so many of our suppliers for over 20 years, and we feel good as a family and as a business that we're doing what we can to keep prices down. >> to tack on the savings, buy private store labels instead of brand names, use frozen instead of fresh, and buy only what you need, a pound of turkey per guest. kelly o'grady, cbs news. switching gears, the menendez brothers are set to make a virtual appearance in a california courtroom tomorrow. the brothers, found guilty of the shotgun murders of their parents in 1989 are serving life sentences without parole. but they are hoping new information about their past could set them free. elise preston spoke with the brothers' attorney. >> erik and lyle menendez -- at

the family's beverly hills mansion. following a 1994 mistrial, the pair was convicted in 1996 after a short second trial, where the judge wouldn't allow the jury to hear the defense's claim that the brothers acted in self-defense after suffering years of physical and sexual abuse. but now after more than 30 years behind bars, freedom may be near. >> we know that the menendez brothers are trying for clemency, are trying for resentencing, and they're trying for a successful habeas petition. >> on monday the menendez brothers will appear virtually at the habeas corpus hearing. >> how did we get here? >> we filed the petition about 18 months ago. there was a letter that was discovered that erik had written to andy, his cousin, which predates the homicides. that letter talks about the abuse and his fear of his father. >> reporter: additionally, a
