the thanksgiving travel rush is on, and it's expected to break record. -- records. the bright spot for drivers and the cross-country storms that could disrupt your plans. trump transition. new questions about the vetting process for cabinet positions and whether it could slow down confirmations. and court date. the menendez brothers serving life for the murder of their parents set to face a judge. what their attorney says could set them free. good morning. i'm matt pieper in for michael george. we start with the thanksgiving holiday getaway and storms that could complicate plans. a system dumping snow today in the upper midwest will move east bringing rain and slick roads to the eastern seaboard tomorrow morning. the next west coast storm will drop snow over the rockies tonight and tomorrow creating messy travel conditions. a record 80 million americans will be on the move for the holiday, an increase of 1.7 million from last year. cbs' naomi ruchim joins us in new york with the latest. good morning.

>> reporter: good morning. for many americans this change in weather after a very mild season is coming just in time for the thanksgiving holiday. still some good news, though. the tsa is promising shorter lines at the airport this year. though tomorrow may be the busiest day of them all. the thanksgiving rush has already begun at airports across the country. >> everything's cool. getting on the flight was pretty good. >> reporter: aaa says more than five million americans will take to the skies this week, with the faa forecasting that the highest number of flights, more than 50,000, will take off tomorrow. the transportation security administration says it's working to keep passengers moving with screening wait times predicted at less than 30 minutes for regular flyers. ten minutes for those with tsa pre-check. >> this year passenger volumes are the highest we've ever seen. fortunately our staffing and tsa is also at the highest levels they've ever been.

>> reporter: severe weather forecasts of cold temps, heavy rain, and snow in parts of the country this week could also create some air travel delays. >> i expect it to be crazy. it probably will take a bit. go ahead and adjust. >> reporter: weather could also impact the more than 71 million americans expected to hit the highways this holiday week. but there's some good news for drivers. prices at the pump are falling. >> got to give folks a little bit more money in their pocketbooks for those holiday ingredients and, of course, those black friday shopping deals. >> reporter: aaa says the national average price for regular gasoline could dip below $3 a gallon this week. and if you are driving, aaa says that tomorrow and wednesday afternoon will be the busiest times on the road. matt, of course that's when we are planning to hit the road with two little kids in tow. they, of course, recommend that

you start your day earlier if you can. i will definitely keep that in mind. but yeah, it's going to be a busy one. get ready. >> it will be. and i will be one of those on wednesday. thank you. president-elect donald trump is putting the finishing touches on his cabinet nominations, announcing his top 15 picks to round out his incoming administration. our latest cbs news poll finds 59% of americans approve of how trump is handling the transition. cbs' nikole killion reports from west palm beach. >> reporter: at his mar-a-lago estate, president-elect donald trump solidified his cabinet with new picks for housing, labor, agriculture, and treasury, tapping investor scott bessent who could become the first openly gay secretary to lead the department if confirmed. >> these are people that are going to work to get america back on track across the board. >> reporter: the president-elect also tapped russell vought, a co-author of the conservative policy blueprint "project 2025" to reprise his role as white house budget director, and he selected a trio of doctors for federal health agencies including former congressman

david weldon, a vaccine skeptic, to head the cdc. >> about choice. it's about getting rid of mandates. >> reporter: a cbs news poll find most of trump's well-known designees have more support than opposition. from marco rubio to robert f. kennedy jr. and pete hegseth, although the former fox news host faces allegations of sexual assault. >> it's frankly an insult and really troubling that mr. trump would nominate someone who has admitted that he's paid off a victim who has claimed rape allegations against him. >> there was no crime committed. so that doesn't prevent pete from moving forward in this. >> reporter: some senators want fbi background checks on the nominees. >> why wouldn't we get these background checks for the most important job in the united states government? >> reporter: it's unclear if the confirmation process could be delayed if those background checks aren't done. so far the trump transition has not signed an agreement with the

fbi or the white house to start the vetting process, although a spokesperson tells cbs news they continue to constructively engage with the biden-harris administration. nikole killion, cbs news, west palm beach, florida. the menendez brothers, erik and lyle, set to make a virtual appearance in a california court today. the brothers, who are serving life sentences without parole for killing their parents, are hoping new information about their past could set them free. cbs' elise preston spoke with the brothers' attorney. >> reporter: erik and lyle menendez rose to infamy following the gruesome august, 1989, shotgun shooting deaths of their parents, jose and kitty menendez, at the family's beverly hills mansion. following a 1994 mistrial, the pair was convicted in 1996 after a short second trial where the judge wouldn't allow the jury to hear the defense's claim that the brothers acted in self-defense after suffering years of physical and sexual

abuse. but now after more than 30 years behind bars, freedom may be near. >> we know that the menendez brothers are trying for clemency or trying for resentencing, and they're trying for a successful habeas petition. >> reporter: on monday the menendez brothers will appear virtually at the hearing that looks at the legality of their imprisonment. how did we get here? >> we filed the petition for habeas corpus about 18 months ago. there was a letter that was discovered that erik had written to andy, his cousin andy, which predates the homicide. that letter talks about the abuse and his fear of his father. >> reporter: additionally, a former member of the '80s boy band menudo has come forward alleging that jose menendez sexually abused him when menendez was an executive at rca records. >> some would argue that they were old enough to walk away.

>> that same argument can be used on any wife who's battered, who kills a husband or an abuser or any husband, vice-versa. >> reporter: the brothers could potentially speak at monday's hearing. elise preston, cbs news, los angeles. the body of an israeli rabbi who went missing in the united arab emirates has been recovered. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu called the killing of zvi kogan a, quote, heinous anti-semitic terror attack. the -- terror attack. the uae says three suspects are under arrest. they will do whatever possible to bring them to justice. the u.s. condemned the murder. also in middle east, word of a ceasefire that could be close. it comes after a day of heavy bombardment from both sides. hezbollah fired about 250 rockets and drones into israel sunday wounding seven people. israeli warplanes responded with strikes on hezbollah locations in beirut. in gaza hamas is claiming an israeli woman taken hostage during the october 7th attacks was killed as a result of the

fighting in the northern part of the strip. the israeli military says it's investigating that claim. and with talks of a cease-fire stalled with hamas, freed hostages called on the israeli government sunday to strike a deal while marking one year since the only handle -- year since the only hostage release deal. around 100 hostages are still being held in gaza. back at home, tributes are pouring in for legendary game show host chuck woolery. >> now here's your host chuck woolery! >> thank you. >> the original host of "wheel of fortune" died in texas. he hosted the iconic show from 1975 to 1982. woolery went on to helm "the love connection" and "scrabble" and was inducted into the american tv game show hall of fame in 2007. chuck woolery was 83 years old. coming up here this morning, breaking overnight, cargo plane disaster. a dhl plane slams into a house in lithuania. and prayers for bishop t.d. jakes after he experiences a medical emergency during his

come true... has just really been exciting. thank you, lane! breaking overnight a dhl cargo plane crashed into a house in lithuania. officials say at least one was killed, a member of the flight crew. authorities say the plane skidded into a home while attempting to land at an airport early today. police say 12 people have been evacuated from the house which caught fire. the cargo plane was flying from germany. it's too soon to know what caused that crash. a heart-pounding scene in southern turkey. rescue crews rushed to extinguish exploding planes from a russian plane. the pilot alerted authorities after the engine caught fire on sunday. all 95 on board got out safely, some using an emergency slide. it is unclear what caused the fire. charges in the death of a fraternity member at dartmouth and an update on t.d. jakes. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "usa today" reports bishop t.d.

jakes is stable after experiencing a health incident during a sermon on sunday. the 67-year-old appeared to pause his sermon and shake. the statement said the renowned pastor and author received medical attention and is under the care of health care professionals. his daughter and son-in-law say the bishop is doing well and thanked everyone for their prayers. npr says two dartmouth fraternity members and a sorority have been charged in the death of a student. 20-year-old won jang drowned at the connecticut river -- in the connecticut river in july after attending an off-campus party. now two members of the beta alpha omega fraternity are charged with providing alcohol to a person under 21. a sorority has also been charged as a corporation for facilitating an underage alcohol party. and "the guardian" reports the government of laos is saddened by the death of tourists in vang vieng.

their days on a farm. good for them. time for cbs "moneywatch" now. stocks closed higher on the wall street friday giving the market its fifth gain in a row and notching another record high for the dow. it gained 426 points. the nasdaq was up 31, s&p 500 gaining 20 points. more than 208,000 electric vehicles are being recalled. the affected evs include hyundai, genesis, and kia models going back to 2022. the recall is to fix a problem that can cause the loss of drive power increasing the risk of a crash. owners will be notified by mail. from vehicle recalls to food ones, sugar foods is recalling its 3.5-ounce bags of fresh gourmet tortilla strips santa fe style over potential wheat contamination. the product is meant to be gluten free. the strips sent out may actually contain fried onions. no illnesses have been reported. and in the meat packing district, they've agreed end to
