to impose sweeping new tariffs on the nation's three biggest suppliers as soon as he takes office. the potential impact and reaction. turkey trot. the thanksgiving holiday exodus kicks into high gear. could cross-country storms wreak havoc on your travel plans? and crash on camera. a small plane slams into a tree while trying to make an emergency landing. good morning, i'm michael george. we start with president-elect donald trump's new threats to impose tariffs on america's three biggest trade partners -- mexico, canada, and china. now it's part of his pledge to crack down on illegal immigration and drug trafficking, but the tariffs could dramatically hike prices for americans on everything from gas to cars to food. and it comes as trump takes a victory lap after the justice department special counsel moved to have two federal cases against him dismissed. two state cases, meanwhile, remain in limbo. a lot to talk about with cbs news' jarred hill.

he joins with us more. >> reporter: good morning. jack smith made it a point that he is calling for these cases to be dismissed as a matter of legal protocol against charging a sitting president, not because he's changed his mind on the merits of either case. a major announcement from the president-elect could have a real economic impact on everybody in the country. a new plan from president-elect donald trump to punish three countries could make life more expensive for americans. day one trump is threatening to impose a 25% tariff on all imports from mexico and canada, plus a 10% tariff on goods from china. it's part of his effort to combat the flow of illegal migrants and drugs. >> you want to allow drugs to come through our southern border? we're going to tariff you. you want them to come through canada, we're going to tariff you. >> reporter: he spoke with justin trudeau last night in what the canadians described as a good conversation. china, mexico, and canada are the top three exporters to the u.s. also on monday, the president-elect scored two

judicial victories. first a d.c. federal judge dismissed the election interference case against him just hours after special counsel jack smith said it should be dropped. >> the dismissal is not because they don't stand behind the evidence, they feel it's strong, they don't feel this is a warranted prosecution, they certainly do. but because the constitution mandates that they cannot prosecute a sitting president. >> reporter: smith also requested that trump be removed from the federal classified documents case out of florida which is currently on appeal. >> i did absolutely nothing wrong. he's a deranged person. >> reporter: trump has long criticized the cases, vowing to fire smith once he took office. on social media yesterday, trump called the cases a political hijacking. >> all right. let's talk about these tariffs because we don't know yet whether this is a threat that president-elect donald trump will follow through on or if this is just a negotiating tactic. what are the legal ramifications? >> reporter: that's something we've seen being brought up by members of industry as well as some of these countries that at

this point is said to be a threat by president-elect donald trump. tariffs on mexico and canada would violate the terms of the north american trade agreement that trump signed in 2020. there could be some legal challenges there. both the mexican peso and the canadian dollar fell in relation to the u.s. dollar after trump's announcement. meanwhile a chinese spokesperson said no one will win a further -- a tariff war. again, bringing up that they've created buffers if something like this were to happen. >> thanks for joining us. now to the thanksgiving travel rush with millions of americans on the move. the tsa projects today to be one of the busiest at the nation's airports with more than 2.8 million travelers expected to pass through security, and the agency says they're ready. but things are already getting off to a bumpy start at boston's logan airport. an american airlines plane clipped the wing of a frontier jet yesterday, and two hours

later a tugging vehicle pulling an empty jetblue plane backed into a cape air jet. no one was hurt in either incident, just a lot of inconvenience. cbs' natalie brand looks at how things are going so far. don't get in the wrong line. >> reporter: thanksgiving air travel is expected to soar to new records this year. >> we definitely felt that the traffic -- >> reporter: the rush started friday when the tsa saw a 25% spike in traffic at checkpoints. the number of flights will peak tuesday at more than 50,000. airlines expect to screen the most people wednesday and sunday. sunday could set an all-time record with more than three million people. hannah tinley flew home monday to avoid the peak rush. >> hardly anyone on it. it was awesome. >> reporter: it wasn't smooth sailing for everyone. >> we found out our flight's already delayed. >> reporter: equipment issues led to temporary flight delays at washington, d.c., airports. at boston's airport, the wings of two airplanes collided on the

ta tarmac. in charlotte, north carolina, a strike by airport service workers could lead to more travel slowdowns. >> we're the reason passengers get on a plane -- >> reporter: weather could be a factor for nearly 72 million people who are expected to drive to their destination this year. roads are still slick in the sierra-nevadas. midweek rain and snow could cause delays in the rockies, the great lakes region and the northeast. >> now is the time to check your tire pressure, your oil, your battery. fill up the tank. package emergency kit with bottles of water, snacks, blankets, flashlight. last thanksgiving aaa rescued more than half a million people over thanksgiving. >> reporter: one bright spot for road warriors, the average gas price could dip below $3 a gallon this holiday week. natalie brand, cbs news, washington. taking a look at the forecast, rain in the northeast this morning will head off the coast. meanwhile, a snowstorm in the rockies will cause travel disruptions today and tomorrow. that same weather system moves east tomorrow with wet driving

conditions expected from ohio to mississippi. by thanksgiving day, rain is likely along the east coast, and there's a chance of wintry weather in the interior northeast. turning overseas, negotiations for a cease-fire between israel and hezbollah in lebanon are nearing the finish line according to u.s. officials. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is set to met with his security cabinet to discuss the deal and possibly even vote on it as the fighting intensifies both sides. under the proposal, israeli forces would withdraw from lebanon for 60 days, and hezbollah would move more than 20 miles away from the israeli border. the lebanese army and the existing u.n. peacekeeping force would be deployed along the border to enforce the deal. but there are still some sticking points. israel is demanding a right to strike inside lebanon if it determines hezbollah has violated the agreement, and lebanon wants to open negotiations with israel on other border disputes. back here at home, the menendez brothers serving life sentences for murdering their

parents will have to wait a little longer to find out if they'll get out of prison. a judge in los angeles heard testimony from their family yesterday while postponing a hearing on the brothers' resentencing request. cbs' elise preston has the latest on the case. i do want them home. they should never have been in such a situation. >> reporter: the elderly aunt of erik and lyle menendez were among the relatives who showed off at court to beg for their nephews' freedom. >> 35 years is a long time. >> reporter: members gathered outside the courthouse for a chance to fill the 16 coveted seats available for the hearing. the menendez brothers waived their appearance by video in prison due to technical difficulties. their aunts testified including joan vandermolen. she told the judge no child should have to endure what erik and lyle went through at the hands of their father. they never know if tonight would

be the night they'd be raped. the hearing is part of several legal pushes to get the duo released, citing additional evidence that jose menendez abused his son and a former member of the band menudo. >> there was a letter that was discovered that erik had written. that letter talks about the abuse and his fear of his father. >> reporter: the menendez brothers fatally shot their parents in 1989. following a mistrial, they were convicted in 1996 after a trial with limited evidence of sexual abuse. a hearing on resentencing for erik and lyle has now been set for the end of january. >> we're hoping that by the end of that or sometime sooner that we will, in fact, get the brothers release. >> reporter: the defense and family have been optimistic the brothers would be home in time for the holidays. that won't happen now. the earliest we could see the release would be in a couple months. elise preston, cbs news, los angeles.

after lorincz argued with her children who were playing nearby. lorincz, who faced up to 30 years behind bars, said she feared for her life but the jury didn't agree. a father who flew to l.a. to find his missing daughter, hannah kobayashi, was found dead in a parking lot near the airport after flying to l.a. from hawaii to join the search for his missing daughter. earlier this month the 30-year-old's family got an alarming text saying she was scared someone was stealing her identity before she vanished. and "the san francisco chronicle" reports a judge ejected an attempt to block a trans player on the san jose state women's volleyball team from playing in a conference tournament. a federal judge denied a motion filed by 12 plaintiffs that would have rendered one of san jose's players ineligible. the lawsuit alleges the student athlete is transgender and should be disqualified, but the judge said the plaintiffs are

to walk off the job on one of the busiest shopping days of the year, and walmart rolls back its dei policies. here's shanelle kaul with today's cbs "moneywatch." >> reporter: stocks closed in the green monday as wall street responded to president-elect donald trump's pick for treasury secretary. the dow gained 440 points. the nasdaq was up 51, and the s&p 500 gained 18 points. macy's says an employee hid up to $154 million in expenses. the retailer said it discovered the issue while preparing its quarterly financial statements through an independent investigation. macy's found that an accounting employee overseeing small package deliveries intentionally hid the money through delivery expenses. the company says it started back in the fourth quarter of 2021, and the employee is no longer with macy's. walmart is rolling back its dei policies.
