attend the annual macy's thanksgiving day parade in new york city, and not even rain can deflate the excitement. we'll take you to the parade route. stowaway discovered. a ticketless passenger boards a delta airlines flight. how she eluded the crew. and new threats targeting donald trump's cabinet picks. what pete hegseth is reveal -- revealing about a pipe bomb scare. good morning, and happy thanksgiving. i'm michael george. well, just like turkey and gravy, it's a thanksgiving day tradition -- in a few hours the macy's thanksgiving day parade kicks off here in new york city. millions of people are expected to attend despite the soggy weather, and millions more will be watching from home. we've got bradley blackburn on the parade route with a preview. good morning. how are things looking out there? >> reporter: hey, happy thanksgiving. no rain yet out here. but this parade will march on rain or shine.

an estimated 3.5 million spectators are expected to line this route. no umbrellas are allowed in the crowd, so you can expect all those millions to be putting on ponchos to take in the spectacle. tom the turkey is ready right behind me, and so are those iconic balloons. anticipation is swelling. >> happy thanksgiving! >> reporter: for the 98th macy's thanksgiving day parade. >> we look forward every year. we come together. >> reporter: the more than two-mile-long route features dozens of marching bands and live performers, 22 floats, and more than 30 balloons, 17 of beloved animated characters. >> i'm looking forward to seeing spider-man. >> reporter: the marvel superhero is one of several new balloons this year along with disney icon minnie mouse. and it all leads up to the main attraction -- st. nick himself. new york police are on heightened alert, but officials say they're prepared after protests related to the

israel-hamas war broke out during last year's parade. >> i really want to take the moment to tell those grinches that believe they're going to disrupt the parade, it's not going to happen. >> reporter: a joint fbi/nypd threat assessment report says while there are no credible threats, top concerns include lone offenders, violent extremist groups, and vehicle ramming. >> there will be security measures that you'll see and others that you won't see. >> reporter: another concern today is the weather. it's expected to rain on this parade, though attendees say they're in rain or shine, and it won't dampen their excitement. the rain isn't a problem for the real stars of this parade, the balloons, but the wind can be an issue. city law limits them from flying if the winds get over 23 miles per hour. thankfully the forecast does not call for that today, michael, so all systems are go. and it's actually only happened once that the balloons have been grounded, that was all the way back in the 1970s. >> all right. bradley blackburn on the parade route for us.

thanks. now as we mentioned, it's wet in the east coast this morning as cold air is expected to move in, and out west some are dealing with the aftermath of snow. the denver area received up to three inches, more than 600 flights were delayed at denver international airport yesterday, and in the mountains some ski areas got more than two feet of powder this week. a tsa official says a stowaway somehow snuck on to a delta flight in newark's kennedy airport and wasn't noticed until the flight was about to land in paris. this is video from passengers on board flight 264 which departed from kennedy to charles de gaulle airport wednesday. a flight attendant caught on to the woman who was staying in the bathroom for what was considered an unusual amount of time. the tsa confirmed she got on the plane without a boarding pass. authorities say the woman could face a civil penalty or fine for bypassing the document check process. we turn now to frightening

threats against president-elect donald trump's top cabinet picks. a spokesperson for the transition team said the threats were received starting tuesday night. last night pete hegseth, trump's choice for defense secretary, wrote on x that police arrived at his home yesterday morning and notified him that they'd received a credible pipe bomb threat targeting him and his family. hegseth said the threat was cleared and said he will not be bullied. cbs' weijia jiang reports on the threats. >> reporter: among the victims of bomb threats and swatting incidents targeting the incoming administration. president-elect donald trump's choice for attorney general, his chief of staff, and his picks to lead the commerce department and environmental protection agency. matt gaetz, who was the nominee for attorney general before he withdrew from consideration, was also targeted. trump's transition team says with president trump as our example, dangerous acts of intimidation and violence will not deter us. the threats unfolded as trump

announced other high-profile positions including dr. jay bhattacharya as head of the nih, the nation's medical research agency. >> government was the number-one source of misinformation during the pandemic. >> reporter: bhattacharya was highly critical of the doctors who led the u.s. response to covid-19, including dr. anthony fauci. he blasted the use of masks and lockdowns and called vaccines propaganda. trump's pick for secretary of health and human services, robert f. kennedy jr., is also a vaccine skeptic. what do trump's picks to lead health agencies tell you so far about the future of these agencies? >> many of these selections imply a skepticism of science. >> reporter: cbs news medical contributor dr. celine gounder is an infectious disease specialist. >> politics and partisanship don't necessarily make for good science, for good biomedical research. and so we can anticipate that

this will harm research at the nih, could interfere with the best public health policies coming out of the cdc. >> reporter: trump has also selected a secretary of the navy, john feelin, who has never served in the military. he was a trump campaign mega donor and leads a private investment firm. trump says feelin will put the business of the u.s. navy above all else. weijia jiang, cbs news, west palm beach. three americans held by china are free this morning as part of a prisoner swap. new video overnight shows them arriving in san antonio, texas, and reuniting with their loved ones. the white house announced their release yesterday. u.s. officials say the men were wrongfully detained for years on espionage and drug charges. scott macfarlane has details. >> reporter: after 12 years of what the state department calls wrongful detention in china, texas businessman mark swidan is finally returning home.

he was on death row in china in what his congressional supporters say were bogus charges. he suffered brutal abuse and neglect according to john kamm, a human rights leader who advocated for swidan's release. >> he is a shadow of his former self. >> reporter: mistreated, malnourished, and physically damaged. >> absolutely. he has been shackled, hand and foot, he has suffered a great deal. >> reporter: two months ago swidan's mother told congress her son's absence has left a gaping hole in our hearts. also released, american john leung, accused of espionage and held since 2021, and ky lee accused of espionage. his son pressed for his father's release. >> it's been so long that the absence of my dad, it feels like a permanent void. >> reporter: no announcement of what america gave china in return or any statement from

china about why it agreed. >> i think they want to say a fond farewell to president biden. it's a message to mr. donald trump, that's very important. >> reporter: scott macfarlane, cbs news. now to the middle east where thousands of civilians in lebanon are returning home following a cease-fire with israel. people displaced by a year of fighting are driving south in beirut in cars packed with their belongings. the cease-fire is supposed to last 60 days. last night in jerusalem israeli demonstrators renewed their call for a cease-fire in gaza. they say the troops in lebanon chose a cease-fire could also be possible there. around 100 hostages remain captive in gaza. and coming up, a new documentary is bringing renewed interest in the decades' long unsolved murder of 6-year-old jonbenet ramsey. and a kentucky plant is being sued following a deadly explosion. this is "cbs news mornings."

you're looking at you're looking at a pair of twin giant pandas experiencing snow for the very first time on wednesday. the zoo in south korea says the duo were born last july and had to stay indoors during winter last year. the pandas seem to love the flakes. they were spotted sliding on a snow field and eating bamboo as snow fell around them and their parents. a deadly explosion in kentucky leads to a lawsuit, and what police are saying about a decades' long unsolved murder. those are some of the headlines we're following on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports police deny sitting on evidence as a new netflix documentary brings renewed attention to jonbenet ramsey's killing. as part of the annual update on the investigation, boulder police refuted claims they're not pursuing leads in the killing of the 6-year-old. they said they're committed to solving the case but need to be careful about what they share. ramsey, who competed in child beauty pageants, was found dead

in the basement of her family home the day after christmas in 1996. "newsweek" says residents are suing a food coloring plant in kentucky over a deadly explosion. two people filed a lawsuit on wednesday against gibidon flavors corporation alleging negligence in connection with a november 12th. -- november 12th explosion. the explosion which occurred in a cooking vessel killed two workers, destroyed the facility, and scattered debris into surrounding neighborhoods. the lawsuit claims the corporation had been warned about the cooking vessel overheating but ignored concerns. the company has not yet commented. and "the hill" reports former new jersey senator bob menendez asked a judge to toss out his conviction and grant him a new trial over improper evidence shown to a jury. menendez made the request after prosecutors disclosed the jury was inadvertently provided information during deliberations that it shouldn't have been given. the 70-year-old was convicted in july of 16 charges including bribery in part based on an

"the new york times" is reporting that the federal trade commission has launched an investigation into microsoft. at issue is whether the tech company violated antitrust law. the paper says regulators are now asking for information on the company's cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity products. the american housing market is heating up. home-buying activity is surging one week after long-term mortgage rates fell for the first time in two months. the mortgage bankers association reported that mortgage

the orlando pride's 1-0 victory over the washington spirit, which aired right here on cbs, averaged more than 960,000 viewers. it became the league's highest viewed championship game yet marking an 18% increase from last year and a 6% jump from 2022. sean "diddy" combs has been denied bail for a fourth time ahead of his sex crimes trial. the judge on wednesday denied his bid to be released on $50 million bail from the brooklyn jail where the music mogul has been held for ten weeks now. the ruling states combs, who's pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking charges, should not be allowed to prepare for his may trial from a private residence. combs has previously been denied bail three times since his arrest with multiple judges citing a risk he might tamper with witnesses. and turkeys are falling from the sky in alaska. esther keim is flying her small plane dropping frozen turkeys to people in remote areas of the state.
