with the people they're thankful for. >> reporter: americans chow down on millions of pounds of turkey every thanksgiving, but not everyone chooses to eat at the table with family. brian carpenter and emma opted far more unconventional approach. eating out. >> the last time we came was christmas day. >> christmas day, yeah. >> yeah. >> reporter: the two regularly ditch the holiday cooking and hit up local spots for dinner. this italian restaurant is their top choice. it scratches the holiday itch without nearly as much effort. >> his mom is in idaho, and unfortunately, all my parents are gone. my sister lives in vallejo, but she's got her kids and her own life. so it's just, like he said, it's easier this way. >> reporter: others decided to toss tradition out the door and eat something completely different. these two traded turkey and cranberries for bok

choy and fried rice. they're visiting from portland and couldn't wait to soak in the san francisco sun. >> we're visiting. this is only chance we got to visit for san francisco with school and work and all of that. >> reporter: our last stop took us to a mexican restaurant just down the street. where we met mike. he made thanksgiving dinner last night with his children, but tonight he's tired of cold leftovers and wanted something fresh, something like fajitas. >> beef fajitas. i don't like tortillas, but black beans, guacamole. my adult children helped, baked dessert and side dishes and everything. a little down time this morning today. >> reporter: he might revisit turkey leftovers tomorrow night, but right now his margarita and a chance to watch the dallas cowboys lose is a reminder of what he's most thankful for, a meal to eat and good connections with others. >> my kids, my friendships, my

family, and health and wealth. >> there's cream cheese under that. >> another unconventional celebration happened today in dolores park where sf babble hosted their annual friendsgiving pot luck, geared toward people who could not make it home for the holiday or who aren't used to celebrating it at all. some attendees are from out of the country. in the past this event has turned strangers into lifelong friends. >> i'm building a great community and, and people stay connected even if they go abroad, if they live very far away, they still stay connected to me and also to the other members. >> and striking hotel workers took some time out today to celebrate as well, fully equipped with a dressed table scape on the sidewalk and even though they took a pause from the picket lines to do that, kevin ko reports they plan to head right back out to strike indefinitely. >> what do we want? >> contracts. >> reporter: if you don't hear

the chants, you'll hear the bangs. from the marriott on sutter street to the westin saint francis. the sounds have stretched across union square for 68 days, but workers say their bosses aren't listening. >> 68 days on a strike, and we haven't hear anything from the grand hyatt. >> we are fighting for something so basic like our wages, our health insurance, and our pensions. >> reporter: jose leon has worked at the grand hyatt for 32 years. he's now part of the bargaining committee representing his coworkers, which he says hasn't gone well. >> sometimes very uncertain. they don't put themselves in our shoes, how hard it is to survive. >> we haven't heard from them. we are waiting. >> reporter: i reached out to hyatt, whose head labor relations stated the company is waiting for the union and is willing to bargain. they said

workers have, quote, not contacted us to resume bargaining since the strike began. >> the last time is like three weeks ago. the hyatt didn't show up it's a thanksgiving stalemate playing out in front of san francisco hotels. while workers stayed on the picket lines, they also set up tables to enjoy a thanksgiving meal together. >> they are worker rights here, most of them, over 20 year. >> reporter: he's worked at the grand hyatt for 34 years. >> that's unfortunate we ehad to have our lunch on the street. you're supposed to be home with your family member, right? but at the same time, they give me opportunity to learn more, you know, about these people right here. so i feel great. >> of course, it's difficult. it's tiring be outside, but we are here, and we are going to continue fighting. >> we also reached out to marriott but have not heard

back from them. workers say they are ready to strike past christmas and into the new year of necessary. well just down the street in the tenderloin, glide held its annual thanksgiving feast. about 200 volunteers came out to help cook and serve the community. the event also helped connect people with services and support. >> glide is every day. and i always want to reiterate that, that we're here 364 days a year feeding our community, supporting our community, giving services and counseling to our community, housing people. >> glide is also delivering 200 meals, hygiene kit, and healthcare packages to people living on the streets who could not attend today. there was a lot of that overall sentiments today of giving with people determined to do what they could to take time to help others, like at the san francisco salvation army, where thousands of low-income seniors got meals delivered. or down in the south bay, where san jose's city team handed out

meals at saint james park. 50 turkey, 300 pounds of mashed potato, 200 pounds of vegetable, and all the fixings. >> it's powerful, man. it's something i'm very grateful for, to be here and have this opportunity to be a part of something. >> we did it. >> yeah. >> and no better way to work off all that thanksgiving food than with one of the many turkey trots in every corner of the bay area today. like here at 20th annual silicon valley trot touted by organizers as the biggest thanksgiving run in the entire country. >> they say you're either a turkey trot family or a mimosa family, we're the turkey trot family. honestly, it's sooner fun, because the energy that the crowd brings, all the costumes, everybody just having a really great time and moving their feet before they eat. >> all right, well, for us mimosa families, we can appreciate the group behind this event says they've raised more than $10 million for

schart since they started back in 2004. huge crowds also turned out to oakland's turkey trot. they had races for people of all skill levels. the money raised there is going toward local food banks, youth health program, and public art projects. coming up, thanksgiving traditions were a little quieter and incredibly emotional for one east bay town after three young people died in a car crash. we'll show you how they were remembered today. >> i honestly don't have the vocabulary to describe it. ever since i heard every single emotion has been raging. and the message from bay area native americans as they mark their own day of commemoration on alcatraz. perfect weather across the bay area for this thanksgiving holiday. temperatures almost exactly where their supposed to be in late november, but it's cooling down rapidly. a chilly start tomorrow for the black friday shoppers. take a look at where temperatures go as we head through the rest of the

into an impromptu memorial today. our amanda hari explains how the community has been processing it all through the holiday. >> reporter: it's very clear that this community has been hit hard by this tragic accident. all day people have shown up visibly emotional to pay their respects at this growing memorial. they say these young people were special. a community united in heartbreak this thanksgiving after thee young people were killed in a solo crash involving a tesla cybertruck. >> i honestly don't have the vocabulary to describe it. ever since i heard every single emotion has been raging. >> reporter: this man didn't want to use his name, but he knew two of the victims. he coached one in high school football and went on a mission trip to mexico with the other. he says they left a lasting impression. >> they were turning into

nothing short of phenomenal young men. fantastic character. anyone who knows them knows that they were fantastic kids. >> reporter: the identities of the victims have not been released by authorities yet, but cbs news bay area has learned all three graduated from piedmont high school in 2023 and were home from college for the thanksgiving holiday. the group had just left a gathering after 3:00 a.m. on wednesday when the crash happened on hampton road near king avenue. piedmont police say when they got to the scene the cybertruck was on fire. the leaves of a nearby tree singed by the flames. >> happy thanksgiving. >> reporter: thursday morning the annual turkey trot became a memorial of sorts, an opportunity for the community to come together and begin the grieving process. >> please turn and give a friend a hug. we all need each other today. >> reporter: mayor jen cavanaugh spoke briefly to try and offer words of solace but admitted there wasn't much she

could say. >> i went to bed last night thinking the words might come today for what to say, it turned out there are no words that will bring these kids back to us, that'll make this all okay. >> reporter: a fourth victim is still alive and in the hospital. mayor cavanaugh says that person had another surgery on thursday. piedmont is a small community, many people knew the victims, and the loss is felt heavy throughout the streets. >> feel like i lost a couple little brothers. i love them both to death. >> reporter: many of the details of the crash are being investigated, but police do believe that speed was a factor. hundreds of people gathered at san francisco's alcatraz before the crack of dawn to celebrate indigenous people and to remember the 1969 occupation on the island that sparked a

national movement for justice. this event is held every thanksgiving. on the fire watch tonight, we are following a fast growing vegetation fire just outside of los angeles where evacuations are underway. the so-called canyon crest fire started around 5:30 this afternoon near the 60 freeway in san bernardino county. it's grown to 85 acre, strong uphill winds have made it difficult to contain. firefighters from at least two local counties are fighting it on the ground. that was jarring to hear about, because for us in the bay area it feels like we've closed the chant oren fire season. >> right. >> they have had a really difficult fire season, though, down in southern california. >> and they haven't had nearly the amount of rain we've had throughout most of the bay area. santa clara valley is going to dry out pretty quickly. we have to keep an eye on things. we always do. the reality of a changing climate. big picture perspective, how things are going to evolve

through the rest of thanksgiving weekend. we're going to stay dry through the rest of the holiday weekend. the good news for southern california is there's a storm system over the pacific. that is making its way in. it doesn't have a lot of moisture to work with. these two features battling for supremacy. high pressure, a blocking high, because it's going to block that storm system down to our south. it might get a few light showers in southern california. we're just going to get some high clouds passing through. filtering the sunshine and ofcational patches of value lee fog. all in all, the weather pattern is cooperative for thanksgiving weekend travel. weather across the entire state should be fine. thick fog in the central valley. that tule fog in sacramento. highs in the upper 50s. that's going to be a recurring theme. that tule fog is going to get think during the overnight and early morning hours through the weekend. national travel is looking pretty good as well after kind of a sloppy day in the northeastern u.s., none of the major travel hubs are going

to have significant complications through tomorrow and likely through the rest of the holiday weekend as well. things are looking good right now as we look out from treasure island towards the bay bridge. temperatures are cooling off. most of us in the 40s. already down to 39 degrees in santa rosa and you will be one of the cool spots on the map by early tomorrow morning. so let's take a look at our forecast low temperatures for tomorrow. we're going to see lows dropping down to a mix of 30s and 40s. but the cold spots are in the north bay valleys. 32 in petaluma. 33 in santa rosa. it's cold but only four, five degrees below normal. the departure from average for the entire bay area. managed to make up for it with not much fog to dissipate in the morning. temperatures warm to the low to mid-60s in the north by a. temperatures east of the oakland hills mostly low 60s. tule fog slowing down the warm-up keeping you in the upper 50s. funny the cool spots tomorrow the spots that can top

110 degrees during the summer. the warm locations in the mid to upper 60s in the santa clara valley. not much variation to our temperatures across the entire region. that's the theme through the whole seven-day forecast. inland temperatures are going to warm up a little bit more as we head into the first week of december. temperatures around the bay also reaching up into the mid-60s. not much change bayside to inland or to the coast and the complete lack of rainfall in the seven-day forecast and even beyond that. some of the very long range data is pointing towards a dry december overall and especially the first two weeks of december. looks like we might be pretty much rain free as we head through the next couple of weeks. we'll keep you updated. >> all right, paul, thank you. i had to make my way all the way from the thanksgiving table to greet you, but we appreciate the forecast. before we do anything else, though, we're going to head to matt with a look at sports. >> sara's diving into the pie

taking a live look across bay area airports tonight, hoping it's at least calm right now, it was a calmer day compared to yesterday overall when nearly 3 million people passed through tsa checkpoints on the way to their thanksgiving destinations, but things will start picking up again tomorrow as all the people who traveled this week, an estimated 18 million to in total, start heading back home. one woman was so determined to get to her destination today that she actually snuck through several layers of airport security and boarded a flight without a ticket. lilia luciano has the details.

>> reporter: it's not what holiday travelers usually want to hear from their pilot. >> hay, folks, hs the captain, we're just waiting for the police to come on board. >> reporter: french police took a woman into custody after she boarded delta flight 264 from new york's jfk to the airport in paris, even though she did not have a boarding pass. tsa says the woman bypassed the identity verification station at the tsa checkappointment. she went through the body scanner. her items were x-rayed and she managed to go u through the security check at the gate in order to get on the plane. >> reporter: passenger rob jackson, who shot this video, said he noticed the flight attendants behafing oddly as they descended into paris. >> i heard them saying we have a passenger who we think was hiding during takeoff. she did not have a seat a boarding pass. she's a stowaway. >> reporter: delta issued a statement saying nothing is of greater importance than matters
