shoppers have already hit the stores early as the holiday buying season gets underway. what are the hot items on everyone's list? plus, evacuation warnings issued overnight after a brush fire breaks out in southern california. where it's now spreading. and feasting on thanksgiving football. the big winners and the big blunders. good morning. i'm michael george. well, ready or not, the official start to the holiday shopping season is here as black friday kicks off. last night thousands of shoppers in commerce, california, got an early jump on their gift buying. they flocked to the citadel outlets where stores are open for 27 hours straight. they call it an all-night non-- all-night shopping party. kristine lazar with more on black friday and shows us where the deals are. >> reporter: black friday is more laid back and no longer the mob scene from years ago. but it's still a major shopping event.

the national retail federation predicts 85 million people will head to a store. do you shop in store, on line? >> i prefer in store. i like to touch and feel. >> reporter: it appears shoppers will be spending today and throughout the holiday season. sales are expected to be 3.2% higher than last year. retailers want to get their share of those dollars and are luring customers with major deals. >> i am very conscious of sale prices. >> inflation has remained top of mind for shoppers. consumers are focused on sales and promotions, but they're willing to splurge on things that matter to them. >> reporter: toys, gaming consoles, and tvs are expected to be hot items. but they could go fast. >> so you want to make sure and shop for those early because once they're gone, those are usually not restocked during the holiday season. >> reporter: retailmenot's stephanie carls says it's important to have a strategy. >> holiday deals are always tempting to look at.

but creating a shopping list and a budget is going to help prevent those impulse purchase and overspending. >> reporter: if you miss out on black friday, there are plenty of other opportunities. holiday deals are expected to continue through the weekend and into december. kristine lazar, cbs news, los angeles. the cost of goods has become a major concern lately with president-elect donald trump's talk about imposing tariffs. and now he's getting pushback on his threat to enact import taxes on products from america's three biggest trading partners. cbs news' wendy gillette is in new york with details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the president-elect enacted tariffs on foreign goods in his first term that did not have much effect on the economy. but these threats of tariffs are much bigger, and some business groups warn they could rapidly escalate inflation. while visiting a nantucket firehouse on thanksgiving, president biden weighed in on president-elect donald trump's threat to levee new tariffs on

exports from mexico and canada. >> i hope he rethinks it. it's a counterproductive thing. the oceans and mexico and canada. last thing we need to do is begin to screw up those relationships. >> reporter: trump, who spent the thanksgiving holiday in mar-a-lago, made the threat days ago on social media, vowing to add a 25% tariff on all good from the u.s.' closest neighbors as well as an extra 10% tariffs on imports from china unless they do more to stop the illegal goods into the u.s. meanwhile, mexico's president claudia sheinbaum is pushing back on trump's account of a positive phone call they had to wednesday. the president-elect posted, quote, she has agreed to stop migration through mexico and into the united states, effectively closing our southern border. yesterday, she clarified on twitter that mexico will stop so-called migrant caravans

before they reach the border, while emphasizing mexico's position is not to close borders but to build bridges between governments and between peoples. in a news conference yesterday, sheinbaum said they did not discuss tariffs in their call. earlier she said mexico may take retaliatory actions should trump make good on his threat. and cbs news has learned that canada is also exploring ways to retaliate if president-elect donald trump follows through on his threats of new tariffs. michael? >> all right, wendy gillette in new york. thanks. the fbi is investigating threats against democratic lawmakers from connecticut. this comes after a number of donald trump's top cabinet picks reported they received similar threats this week. cbs news has confirmed that five members of the house and senate from connecticut were targeted by bomb threats on thanksgiving. senator chris murphy's office said the threats appeared to be part of a coordinated effort involving multiple members of congress and public figures. police responded to each of

their homes but found no evidence of explosives on the lawmakers' properties. now to southern california where a brush fire has exploded in size. the kenyon crest fire broke out yesterday evening in riverside county east of los angeles. it's already grown to at least 85 acres, driven by winds. firefighters say it's burning uphill. an evacuation warning was issued. now so far no injuries have been reported, but the fire is 0% contained. overseas now to the war in ukraine. russia attacked ukraine's energy infrastructure yesterday leaving more than a million homes and businesses without power. explosions were heard throughout the country. it's the latest in escalating attacks between ukraine and russia. ramy inocencio has details. >> reporter: for the second time in two weeks, russia launched a nationwide strike against ukraine's energy grid, seen here and confirmed by cbs news. a russian missile exploding over

the country's west. president volodymer zelenskyy said russia launched almost 200 missiles and drones aimed at forcing the united states to accept russia's terms to ending the war. russian president vladimir putin said nearly 20 targets including military and defense sites were hit. and at a security summit in neighboring kazakhstan, he warned kyiv's decisionmaking centers could be next, targeted by russia's new ballistic missiles carrying multiple warheads and which moscow unleashed last week, hitting ukraine's eastern city of dnipro. after the newest bombardments, more than one million people across ukraine lost power as the first snow fell on the eastern front lines. there is no electricity, said this man, we have coal and firewood. in the south, people lined up for water. "i checked five public water stations," said this man, "and only this one is working."

near the western side of poland, generators sputtered to life giving a semblance of normalcy for some. "now we are used to it," said this clerk. georgia. police clashed with thousands of protesters after the government suspended talks on joining the european union. officers fired water cannons and used pepper spray and teargas as some people tried to smash their way into parliament. the country's interior ministry said three police officers were injured. the sausage stand gets its due recognition, a tennis star accepts her punishment, and an incredible story of survival. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the new york times" reports a hiker survived 50 days in the canadian wilderness. sam benastick was found limping down a road in a remote british columbia park on tuesday by two park workers who recognized him. the 20-year-old had been reported missing after failing to return home from a ten-day hiking trip on october 17th. in all, he spent 50 days in the mountainous tundra where temperatures dropped below zero. he was taken to a hospital to recover. is getting a one-month ban in a doping case she says came as a shock. the five-time grand slam winner accepted a one-month suspension after testing positive for a banned substance. a heart medication known as tmz. she failed an out-of-competition drug test in august and admitted to the anti-doping rule violation on wednesday and accepted her penalty. officials accepted the positive test was caused by the contamination of melatonin that she'd been taking. it was determined her level of fault was extremely low. and the "associated press" reports the vienna sausage stand is more than just a snack stall. now it has a unesco heritage recognition. th culture of the sausage stand became the latest addition to cultural heritage overseen by the austrians. they say it brings classes and background together and has its own distinctive vocabulary.
