passengers. >> he appeared to be, in fact, not be carrying a knife. >> a bombshell piece of evidence against a man accused of carrying cash app founder. rallies behind one of their own as the 49ers help one of their own deal with tragedy. this is late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. hi, i'm sara donchey. school closures we have been talking about them a lot and not just in one place. multiple bay area school districts have been floating it as an option to deal with serious budget short falls. san francisco unified and oakland unified both tossed around the idea of closing or merging schools. another district seems to be following suit. allen rock school district serves part of east san jose. tonight, leaders plan to combine four and shutdown 6. take a look at the list here. they include elementary and middle schools

in the district. at least one of the schools on that list will consolidate with another. leaders decide to combine renaissance academy fisher with matson, our kelsey thourd breaks down the decision tonight. >> how do you vote? >> and myself, motion passes unanimously. >> reporter: after close to five hours of discussion and public comment, allen rock union school districts board of trustees voted unanimously to close six schools and consolidate four others. the decision brought with it high emotions from both those in the public and those on the board. >> they deserve better than what we are providing. we can provide a better education if we close schools, is everyone going to be effected and pissed off? yes, who is it going to benefit the most? the children and their learning and that is

why i am here. >> reporter: the district says they are facing a fiscal crisis due to a significant decline in student enrollment in recent years the board says the school closures will help to balance the budget. still, many parents were not happy with the way the board went about deciding the closures and many voiced their displeasure in person at monday night's meeting >> it breaks my heart all of the schools are considered for closure knowing we are one of the richest areas in california. you should be a shame of yourself. you are failing our students, failing our future. >> school closures and consolidations are needed and i agree with that and a short term fix we need to get to reform. >> reporter: all of the schools slated to close will do so at the end of this school year. attendance boundaries will be reconfigured with effected students funneled into the next

closest school.. >> so, the superintendent says i see an opportunity to reimagine the district as leaner and focused on success. consolidating resources we will enhance programs and facilities and make a greater impact for students. the holiday season means the season for shopping and union square was once upon a time the meca of shopping. things have differently changed. there year as another black friday has come and gone union square says they are seeing some signs of life. wilson walker takes a look at the slowly-building momentum. >> these are all of the items that, you know, shipped from over the weekend for today. >>. >> reporter: online sales filled some of the void left by the drop in foot traffic primarily tourist traffic at his union square men's store.

>> not that many left. nordstrom is closed. saks closed. >> reporter: he opens this business 38 years ago. he said things started getting difficult in 2017 before the pandemic made things nearly impossible where do things stand now? >> things turned around a little bit last year. we just feel that san francisco has really bad negative publicity. >> i would gauge the trajectory as positive. we are picking up momentum and businesses are coming back to union square interested in the city center. iconic city center and gravity pulls us here. >> reporter: she is the ceo of the union square alliance, the district is showing signs of a recovery that will take some time. >> oh, yeah, you know, this is not something that changes overnight. this is a process. it takes focus and strategy to really rebuild the momentum. >> i think it is just a matter

of a little bit positive publicity would be good for the city. i hope the new mayor will be business-minded person. >> it is not an easy environment for a business to be in san francisco. >> reporter: back in february the now mayor-elect did make a campaign stop out of the sale of the macy's building and now there is word there are several possible local investors although macy's future remains uncertain. >> we are excited for what else they might have planned, housing? is it a five-star hotel, right? >> reporter: on the subject of hotels. >> i am sympathetic to people. i know some of the people from the lobby of the hotel from the bartenders to the doorman. >> reporter: a number of business owners that told us the ongoing hotel strike is not exactly helping things during an already difficult situation. >> it is really, really

disturbing. we knowed our door but the noise bothers our customers. >> reporter: but the protests like the city's wounded reputation can be resolved and he is hopeful that new leadership with time will find solutions. >> and i think this city has great potential. just have to use it correctly. >> some business owners say they are looking ahead to next year. there is a jp morgan conference in january considered one of the largest on the calendar. then, the nba all-star game in february. so, they are hoping that this momentum we have been talking about continues. a man on a princess cruise ship is missing and believed to have gone over board. the cruise line said they spent the day working with local authorities combing through security footage and searching all over the ship to no avail. he is 72 years old and traveling by himself. the ship left san francisco this evening

heading to the hawaiian islands. the suspect accused of stabbing a man to death near the b.a.r.t station will not face charges. the san francisco da's office says the suspect may have been acting in self-defense. the 36-year-old was arrested two weeks after the stabbing happened. the police stopped him for fair evasion. it just so happened -- fare evasion. it just so happened that they identified him as the suspect of that deadly stabbing. while the police have probable cause to arrest him prosecutors, prosecutions require beyond a reasonable doubt to proceed. for the second time this season the 49ers are rallying around a teammate mourning the loss of a child. vern glenn is here with the latest. i mean it is shocking to even hear this once but twice it is just unimaginable. >> the family knew it was coming, does not make it feel better because you are counting down the days until, well, it happened last night. two separate infant deaths in just over a month. it happened with

ward's family. and a daughter a week shy of her second birthday and last week, trent williams family, his wife, sandra, posted that the couple lost their son trenton who was still born. kyle shanahan today. >> he was there at the hospital with her. and got to meet him and say bye and then had to cremate him on friday. he has been dealing with that and working through it. we are all just trying to be here for him through it all. >> they had been expecting twins but lost their first son earlier in the pregnancy. in the case of the other son he was diagnosed with a genetic condition. i do know one thing in the case of the williams family, for trent, he has the entire organization for support. sara?

before they think police officers will be involved. before they think the text messages will be subpoenaed for a trial. as attorneys make their closing arguments in the bob lee murder trial one of the first pieces of evidence in the case is coming back to life. a series of text messages between the accused killer nima momeni sent after the stabbing. those messages are, again, used as a tool to put down in a jury's mind. they could be days away from signing his fate. >> reporter: the closing argument suggesting that momeni acted in self-defense is not reasonable. this case could come down to communication between momeni and his sister, specifically if momeni was attempting to cover up a crime or if he was seeking his own justice for his sister. after six weeks in courtroom 28, the

bob lee murder trial enters its final chapter. prosecutors on monday delivered their closing argument. painting a chilling picture of the night lee was fatally stabbed. a killing that they argue was intentional and planned by nima momeni >> i don't want bob's kids to watch the man that killed him back on the street that is the main thing, right? i never want to see that happen. >> reporter: as the prosecutor made his final pitch to the jury a new piece of evidence shown for the first time cast doubt on momeni's defense. the video captured just 30 minutes before the fatal encounter shows lee walking out of the millennial tower apartments, a gust of wind catches his jacket, lifting it just enough to reveal nothing. no sign of a weapon weighing down his right front jacket pocket as the defense had claimed. >> that was the pocket where the knife was supposed to be

according to momeni. but, bob lee's jacket pocket on the right side was not weighted down. it was cooberation that bob lee not only was not the type of person to be carrying a knife but he appeared to be, in fact, not carrying a knife. >> reporter: inside the courtroom the videolanding like a bombshell, undermining momeni's testimony that lee grabbed the nearly 8 inch knife from his sister's apartment. driving home the cases that it was momeni, not lee who had the weapon. they also shed light on potential motive. text messages between momeni and his sister as she calls him psychotic and denying lee ever harmed her. prosecutors argued this might have been enough to spark a rage in momeni. >> the text from his sister

saying you act psychotic when you are on blow, you act like a lunatic, you scare me. that is fresh evidence right after in the days following the stabbing. it reminded the jury that is what they should be considering not a story that the prosecution says was over the year and a half since the beginning of the case. so, those trial by text essentially was a way that the prosecution would enforce their case. >> reporter: now, sara, inside of the courtroom prosecutors revealed new video from bob lee. showed lee in his final moments, red bloodstaining his hands as he collapsed to the floor. now i watched as bob lee's former wife comforted the two children who were present inside of the courtroom. but the graphic video just too much to bear. part of the family left the courtroom. now, we will be back for closing arguments by the defense and one final

again tomorrow. in terms of the lack of rain chances, here is the proof, the rain chart, over the next 7 days, when the green line is that close to the bottom it means, it is not going to rain. so, any surplus that we built up for the north bay and san francisco it is going to erode over the course of the next 10 or 12 rain-free days, we will not erase it in santa rosa, still high. san francisco, 23%, we will be below average next week and the numbers will go down in the spots where we are running a rainfall deficit. less than 50% of the rainfall in livermore, two thirds in san jose and not a drop in sight for the next 10-12 days in all likelihood. clear skies, temperatures retreating into a mix of 40s and 50s. continue dropping off. it will not be overly chilly. they are not going to be all that chilly. and the north bay

valley locations, dropping into the lower 30s in a couple spots. 41. a cool spot on the map. otherwise talking about lower to middle 40s. not a lot of variation. once the sun comes up, a little bit of fog inland. especially east of the range. we will be seeing the numbers slow to warm up around antioch and brentwood. cooler spots, lower 60s. a couple degrees below average. in the lower 70s. that is 10 or 11 degrees above normal. most of us in the five to 10 degree above average range, mostly in the 60s. warmer spots, making it up. upper 60s. you will make it all of the way up to 67 degrees. not too bad for early december. these temperatures will be very consistent over the course of the next several days, the one day that does stand out in the seven-day forecast . it is saturday. missing us to the north. the passes clouds enough to put the

breaks on the warm up a little bit for a warm day. lower 60s for highs, middle 60s inland, it is approximately, the range of temperatures will be from 63 to 72. middle 60s is in the middle. about six or seven degrees above normal on a day to day basis. the other influence the high pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere it squashes the fog as it tries to develop. the temperatures along the coast getting out of the upper 50s. hitting the lower 60s in the beginning of next week. sara? . 9ers fans have seen ups and downs this season. a snowstorm is where one fan says he is drawing the line. he traveled to buffalo for sunday's game and chronicled his experience in the snow. let's just say, somehow, he was not ready. here is how it went down. there is the fan driving through a snowy new york neighborhood captioned, i don't know how people can live like this. then you see snow piling up on top of a house there, the temperature, 26 degrees, the fan was in disbelief capturing the video, this, it is this cold. >> sideways ice.
