3:36 am
for a magnitude 7 earthquake, the damage could have been much worse. >> started off pretty slow and then it started to escalate and that's when things really started to fall. >> reporter: but even though her restaurant is still standing -- >> it is definitely going to be a bit of a task to get back on our feet. >> reporter: there were fortunately no reports of major injuries or heavy damage, but there were power outages. kenny choi, cbs news, san francisco. people in the great lakes region and parts of the northeast continue to deal with relentless snow, bitter cold and gusty winds. erie, pennsylvania, saw near blizzard conditions with up to a foot of new snow and wind gusts topping 50 miles per hour. in ohio, governor mike dewine declared a state of emergency in four counties due to lake-effect snow. a driver slid off the road and ended up submerged in a pond. he was able to get out through the sunroof, though. in oxford, massachusetts, the weight of the snow toppled a tree on top of a van, seriously injuring the driver.

3:39 am
unnecessary and unfortunately that is sometimes what you get when you have someone from the business world coming in with a mandate to just start chopping. >> reporter: musk did not respond when we asked if doge would target the most expensive programs, driving federal spending. >> any idea whether you want to cut social security? medicare maybe too? defense spending might be on the chopping block at all? >> reporter: scott macfarlane, cbs news, the capitol. president biden is considering issuing sweeping preemptive pardons to prominent critics of president-elect trump to protect them from possible retribution and future prosecution. people familiar with white house discussions tell cbs news that no specific names have been formally recommended to biden, but the list could include dr. anthony fauci, general mark milley, democratic senator-elect adam schiff and former republican congresswoman liz ki.
