execution-style murder of the ceo of unitedhealthcare. but his whereabouts are still a mystery. disturbing allegations. rap mogul jay-z named in a civil lawsuit alongside sean "diddy" combs, accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl. his fiery reaction. ♪ ♪ good morning. i'm matt pieper in for michael george. good to be with you. we start with a power shift and a lot of uncertainty in the middle east. syrians across the globe are celebrating now that the assad family's decades-long reign is over, but the big question, who will fill the void. syria is home to multiple ethnic and religious groups. for years awe bub mohamed al-jolani has been working for years. >> this is the first time

opposition forces have reached damascus since 2018 and according to russian forces bashar al-assad was given instructions to transfer power peacefully. the events of the weekend have shaken the middle east. while many in syria celebrate there's great unease across the region and here in the u.s. celebration in syria after the downfall of bashar al-assad. in just days, armed rebels took key cities before claiming the capital, damascus. >> the speed at which that unfolded was surprising i think to most everybody in the international community. >> russian state media outlets report that assad and his family fled to moscow and were given asylum. his once impenetrable palace ransacked as his country descended into a bloody nearly 14-year civil war, assad was propped up by russian, iran and hezbollah militants who carried out a brutal campaign of

documented war crimes including indiscriminate airstrikes and chemical weapons attacks. overnight dozens of syrian migrants who fled to turkey lined up at the border hoping to return home. >> at long last the assad regime has fallen. >> yesterday president joe biden said it is a moment of historic opportunity and one of risk and uncertainty as syria pivots from more than 50 years of assad family rule. >> this process will be determined by the syrian people themselves. the united states will do whatever we can to support them. >> the u.s. military says it conducted airstrikes on isis targets in central syria sunday. israel has deployed forces into a buffer zone along its shared border with syria, saying it is to ensure the safety of its citizens. and this morning we are learning that israeli fighter jets hit suspected chemical weapon sites in syria. israel's foreign minister says it has taken the preventive action to stop them from falling

in the wrong hands. meantime, yesterday president biden acknowledged ongoing efforts to find american journalist austin tice who went missing in syria 12 years ago. the president says he believes tice is alive and that he is committed to returning him to his family. matt. >> so much going on in the mid east. naomi ruchim here in new york. thank you. new developments and evidence in the hunt for the killer who gunned down the ceo of unitedhealthcare here in the heart of manhattan. the nypd is widening its net. officers are now on the ground in atlanta where the bus he apparently took to new york city originated. we get the latest now from cbs news's shanelle kaul. through new images released by new york city police on saturday appear to show the masked gunman inside a taxi just 20 minutes after he murdered unitedhealthcare ceo brian thompson. the only surveillance photos of the suspect's full face, released by police, were taken when he checked into a nearby

hostel. investigators say the gunman switched from a black ski mask to a blue surgical mask before taking that cab to an interstate bus terminal in up town manhattan wednesday morning. after the shooting sources tell cbs news he may have boarded a bus bound for atlanta. >> it is going to make it a lot more difficult, you know, being able to track him down. >> reporter: for a second day police sent divers into this lake in central park after finding what they believe to be the gunman's back back near friday but not the murder weapon. the high-profile search has now expanded across state lines with more than 80 police departments called in to assist. i'm wondering what the role is of those departments, police departments across the country, that they will actually play in this investigation? especially given the fact we don't know publicly the person's name who police are looking for. >> well, just because you don't know publicly who the person is, the investigators who are assisting may know.

they might have been told, hey, keep things close to your chest. >> reporter: and investigators are also still trying to determine where the gunman boarded that bus that brought him to new york city ten days before the shooting. shanelle kaul, cbs news, new york. a civil lawsuit is accusing rap stars jay-z and sean "diddy" combs of raping a 13-year-old girl. the anonymous accuser claims she was raped at a house party after the mtv music awards in new york in the year 2000. a federal lawsuit was originally filed in october against only combs but was refiled yesterday to include jay-z who is calling it a blackmail attempt. in a statement he said, quote, these allegations are so heinous in nature that i implore you to file a criminal complaint, not a civil one. whomever would commit such a crime against a minor should be locked away, would you not agree? combs, meantime, remains jail awaiting trial. he has pled not guilty. president-elect donald trump is giving his list of priorities

he plans to enact on day one. in a wide-ranging interview he talked about tariffs, pardons and possible retribution for critics. nikole killion has that. fresh off his whirlwind weekend on the world stage, president-elect donald trump appeared on "meet the press" where he was pressed on his agenda weeks ahead of taking office, from tariffs. >> can you guarantee american families won't pay more? >> i can't guarantee thinking. >> reporter: to the border. >> is it your plan to deport everyone who is here illegally over the next four years? >> well, i think you have to do it and it is a very tough thing to do. >> reporter: on his mass deportation plan, trump said he would prioritize criminals who are in the country illegally. he also said it could include families with mixed citizenship, but he indicated he is open to allowing dreamers, those brought into the u.s. as children, to stay. and he reiterated his pledge to end birth rye citizenship.

the deal tops shohei ohtani's ten-year, $700 million contract with the los angeles dodgers. a tragic discovery in atlanta. in a crash at a parade. those are some of the headlines on the morning news stand. the desert sun reports 12 people were taken to hospitals after a police officer crashed his motorcycle into bystanders at a holiday parade in palm springs, california. witnesses say the officer was popping a wheelie and suddenly lost control of the cycle during saturday's festival of lights parade. three people including the officer were kept at the hospital for more treatment. their injuries are not considered life threatening. the atlantic journal constitution says five people were found dead in an apartment complex. police were called to the apartment to do a welfare check. when they arrived they discovered the bodies of five people, including a 1-year-old boy and 5-year-old girl. police say all had gunshot wounds. the deaths are under investigation but they say it

appears it was a domestic-related murder/suicide. the jury will consider a reduced charge in the chokehold death of a man on a subway che. on friday a murder charge was dismissed against daniel penny. the jury will now consider a charge of criminally negligent charge. penny says he put neely is a chokehold after dmeelie began shouting and yelling at them. a ban on food coloring could come soon after years of testing. grab bounty.
