>> the evidence, the handwritten note suggesting a motive and his background including an ivy league education. good morning, everyone. i'm erroll barnett in for my friend michael george. a chanced sighting led to the dramatic break in the shooting of unitedhealthcare ceo brian thompson. the suspect, 26-year-old luigi ma mangione from a prominent maryland real estate family. his writings, investigators say, show anger towards corporate america. the mangione was arrested at a mcdonald's in altoona, pennsylvania, about 280 miles west of the murder scene in new york city. cbs's naomi ruchim joins us in new york with the latest on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this story reads like a movie script, but sadly a ceo, a father of two lost his life in a

brazen attack. police now believe they have their man and we are learning more about luigi mangione, an otherwise high achieving person in his 20s who ranted about corporate america. this morning luigi mangione is behind bars. the 26-year-old was arraigned and later charged with second degree murder yesterday in the shooting death of unitedhealthcare ceo brian thompson. >> justice will be delivered in this case. >> reporter: pennsylvania police were called to the scene after the maryland native was spotted by an employee at a mcdonald's in altoona around the:15 a.m. yesterday. the investigators say they approached him and asked if he had recently been to new york. >> he became visibly nervous, kind of shaking at that question. >> police say he was carrying a fake new jersey i.d. that matched the one allegedly used to check in to a new york hostel last week. authorities say they later

recovered mangione's passport with his real name along with a gun, suppressor and clothing that they believe are consistent with those used in the shooting and a three-page handwritten document expressing ill will toward corporate america. >> he's a coward, not a hero. >> mangione is from a prominent maryland family that owns multiple country clubs. he was the valedictorian of his 2016 class at the elite all boys gilman school in baltimore and later earned computer science degrees from the university of pennsylvania. >> i knew of him. i knew him somewhat well. he was a nice kid. >> reporter: mangione spent time in hawaii in 2022 and 2023. two sources who knew him then say he sfrufrd back pain due to an injury. the murder charge starts the extradition process back to new york which could take days or weeks. the mangione family released a statement last night saying they are shocked and devastated by

the news adding that they offer prayers to the family of brian thompson and all involved. erroll? >> naomi ruchim, thank you for that. now let's get you the latest out of the middle east and the sweeping changes across syria. the assad regime's outgoing prime minister met with the leader of syria's rebels for the first time agreeing to hand over power after insurgents seized the capitol and toppled long-time dictator bashar al assad. thousands of syrians showed up at a prison known as the human slaughterhouse hoping for news of loved ones who were imprisoned or disappeared. crews were seen digging holes for hidden cells or chambers there. cbs news's elizabeth palmer made her way into syria. >> reporter: as we approached what used to be a closely guarded frontier, we found all the guards had melted away. we've crossed the syrian border and that gunfire is celebratory gunfire. those are either fighters with

the group that's taken over in jubilant armed citizens. in downtown damascus the fighters who seized the capitol on sunday were parading their weapons. syrians looked on smiling not quite believing their eyes. these men are with an islamist group, hts. their leader is abu muhammad al jolani, a conservative syrian muslim. he spoke at an ancient mosque. this is a victory for islamic nation and a new history for the nation. jolani has promised to protect christians and other syrian minorities. now the dictator bashar al assad has fled, delighted citizens tore down symbols of the regime. some even went for a joyride on the statue of assad's father. how do you feel now?

lebanon has been involved for years in mediating talks over tice's fate. his family says they've been told he's alive. >> in chaos there is opportunity so this is the moment to reach out to any and all organizations or individuals to do anything in their power to help us bring him home. >> reporter: now president biden says his administration believes they can get tice out of syria. and coming up on "cbs mornings," tice's parents will join us to talk about their renewed hopes to bring him home. a new york jury acquitted marine veteran daniel penny in the chokehold death of a man on a subway train. penny was found not guilty of criminally negligent homicide days after a charge of manslaughter was dismissed because the jury was deadlocked. penny said he put jordan neely in a chokehold for several minutes last year to protect people on the subway car after neely began threatening and shouting at them. neely was unhoused and had a

history of mental illness. >> i miss my son. my southern didn't have to go through this. i didn't have to go through this either. it hurts. the system is rigged. >> prosecutors argued penny was justified for using some force. the chokehold lasted too long. turning now to the presidential transition. three of president-elect donald trump's choices for top positions will be back on the hill trying to win support from senators, and this comes one day after two key republicans signaled they're open to confirming pete hegseth as secretary of defense. cbs's scott macfarlane has more on this. the. >> reporter: kash patel arrived to see if he could win a job that's already filled. president-elect donald trump wants patel to lead the 35,000 person fbi and wants to push out current director chris wray, who trump nominated in 2017 and who was supposed to hold the job until 2027.

trump soured on wray for the 2022 raid of mar-a-lago and for the fbi's handling of january 6th cases. >> any thoughts about whether to continue probing the january 6th investigation? patel is a trump loyalist who pushed trump's claims of 2020 election fraud. he received a boost from chuck grassley who will chair the senate judiciary committee and urged wray to move on. patel's visit comes a day after trump revealed he wants to pardon january 6th defendants immediately upon taking office. >> we're going to look at individual cases. >> reporter: everyone? >> yes. but i'm going to be acting very quickly. >> reporter: he said the u.s. house members who investigated january 6th should be locked up. donald trump said january 6th committee members, members of congress should go to jail. >> uh-huh. >> reporter: what do you make of that? >> well, i mean, i heard what he said. you heard what he said but -- >> reporter: do you agree with it. >> -- i do not think that's the function of the senate in the confirmation process. >> reporter: meanwhile, trump's

in reno, this as an anchor was getting ready to shoot a segment there in the studio. the quake was centered near the city of yerington. it was felt in las vegas and throughout central california. the umpt s. geological survey said 12 smaller quakes followed. there were no reports of damage. new jersey.com said the state had 49 mystery drone sightings sunday night. that's according to governor phil murphy. maybe you saw this. the fbi began investigating reports of mysterious nighttime drones across central jersey last month and this spread to the south of the state. murphy says the report sunday included some that were not drones but added officials do not know what some are or where they're coming from. did say there is no concern for public safety. and the associated press reports wildlife rescuers rushed to save geese and ducks soaked in oil due to a spill in a river. authorities were dispatched to the muddy river on the border of
