what we're learning about his own medical history. out of control. a fast-moving wildfire is burning across malibu forcing thousands from their homes. the scary moment as flames approached a university library. and breaking overnight, sale canceled. a judge blocks the auction of alex jones' "infowars" to "the onion" satirical news outlet. good morning, i'm shanelle kaul in for michael george. we start with the suspect arrested in the killing of united healthcare ceo brian thompson. this morning luigi mangione remains behind bars in pennsylvania after being denied bail. we saw a different version of the high school valedictorian and ivy league grad when he showed up at the courthouse shouting and struggling with police. now the 26-year-old says he plans to fight his extradition back to new york. cbs' jarred hill joins us with more on this story.

good morning. >> reporter: hey. and that battle over whether mangione comes back to new york could be a long one. the pennsylvania charges relate to gun crimes but we're learning more about the motive for the murder of a health care ceo in broad daylight in manhattan. shouting to the cameras -- >> completely -- it's over -- >> reporter: luigi mangione entered the pennsylvania courthouse defiant. the 26-year-old maryland native denied bail and fighting extradition to new york where he's charged with second-degree murder, accused of killing united healthcare ceo brian thompson. his lawyer says he plans to plead not guilty. >> i haven't seen any evidence that says he's the shooter. >> reporter: altoona police arrested the suspect monday after he was spotted at this mcdonald's. >> it's unbelievable. >> reporter: this man says he was there at the same time. >> my thought everyone was kidding around. one guy said, that looks like the shooter from new york. >> reporter: according to a investigators, police found

mangione with a 3d-printed gun and silencer similar to the one used in the shooting. plus, a handwritten three-page note reading in part, "these parasites simply had it coming." >> he explained his reason for doing what he did, which in his mind was precisely to deplore the state of health care in the united states. >> reporter: mangione had complained about a back injury on social media. >> i do know that he was suffering from a spinal misalignment that had been ongoing for quite some time. feel heartbroken. somebody that i loved and cared about, you know, that could have done something so hideous. >> reporter: authorities say the extradition process could take up to 30 days. and authorities in both new york pennsylvania say that they have been getting threats since mangione's arrest. meanwhile, the mcdonald's where he was found has hired private security, and google has taken down a bunch of negative reviews that have been posted since the arrest happened. back to you. >> all right. jarred hill. thank you.

now to southern california where a fast-moving wildfire is raging out of control. the flames already destroyed several homes and thousands of acres in less than 24 hours. about 20,000 people have been ordered to evacuate. cbs' danya bacchus has more from malibu. >> reporter: within hours the franklin fire in malibu, california, exploded. rapidly scorching more than 2,500 acres and damaging homes. the fire has grown an additional 600 acres this morning and this afternoon. over 1,500 firefighters are currently assigned to this incident. >> reporter: thousands were ordered to evacuate. kurt camm stayed behind. >> all these things were swirling down. and there's just sparks and embers blowing everywhere. you think the world's coming to an end. >> reporter: students at nearby pepperdine university captured the flames inching closer as others took cover in the

library. >> very scary. but we got in, and we're fine. >> yeah. >> we just had to wait it out. >> reporter: to get control of this wind-driven fire that's hitting this rugged mountainous terrain, firefighters are attacking from the air. >> we're in the middle of december, and yet we're experiencing yet another wildfire in southern california. >> reporter: red flag warnings remain in effect for southern california through wednesday. danya bacchus, cbs news, malibu, california. in the middle east israel is denying reports that its troops advanced beyond a buffer zone inside syria. the israeli military says it carried out more than 350 strikes in 48 hours, destroying most of the syria's military capabilities to prevent weapons from falling into the hands of terrorists. the leader of the rebel forces which seized control of the country insists it will move syria toward development and reconstruction, adding the

people there are exhausted from war. while the u.s. considers a group a terrorist organization, president biden says the u.s. will recognize a new syrian government that denounces terrorism. rebels have also taken over the presidential palace. video from inside shows papers tossed about and damaged photos of ousted dictator bashar al assad. cbs' elizabeth palmer takes us inside one of the world's most notorious prisons where thousands of syrians are looking for loved ones who disappear. >> reporter: the search is on for syria's disappeared. some kind of maybe underground holding cells. this prison is literally a black hole. horrible. dark, damp, smelly, cold. in squalid cells the assad regime locked up its critics, their families were told nothing. and thousands were never seen again.

doj and the fbi between 2017 and 2020. those investigations obtained records from members of congress, their staffers, and journalists. the report says the department failed to follow its own policy and ignored established protections. breaking overnight, a federal bankruptcy judge has rejected the sale of conspiracy theorist alex jones' "infowars" website to "the onion." this after he claimed the auction that named "the onion" bidder was fraught with illegal coercion. -- collusion. he was forced to sell "infowars" to pay the $1.5 million that he owes to the families of sandy hook elementary school shooting victims for falsely claiming the massacre was a hoax. coming up, daniel penny breaks his silence. he explains why he put a man in a choke hold a day after being acquitted in his death.
