killing of united healthcare's ceo. and mystery in the sky. the unexplained drone sightings over new jersey. who could be responsible. ♪ good morning. i'm carissa lawson in for michael george. we start with the big shakeup at america's premier law enforcement agency that has far-reaching implications for u.s. national security. fbi director christopher wray announced he will leave his post when the biden administration ends. years before the end of his term. it comes weeks after president-elect donald trump picked wray's replacement -- his loyal ally kash patel. trump arrived in new york city where today he's expected to ring the opening bell at the stock exchange. to celebrate being named "time" magazine's man of the year. it will be his second. jarred hill joins us now with more details.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we're going to wait a little bit longer to see president-elect donald trump's new "time" cover and the message that goes with it. that shakeup at the fbi, with tenure terms it's a role that's designed to live outside of politics, but the changing political tides appear to have forced chris wray out early. in a stunning announcement, fbi director christopher wray says he'll step down next month before president-elect donald trump donald trump takes office. -- before president-elect donald trump takes office. still with about two years left on his term. >> this is not easy for me. i love this place. but my focus is and always has been on us and on doing what's right for the fbi. >> reporter: trump called his resignation, quote, a great day for america. the former president nominated wray to post in 2017. he later soured on his pick after fbi-led probes into his ties to russia. efforts to overturn the 2020 election and the alleged mishandling of classified materials that included the search of trump's home in

florida. >> he invaded mar-a-lago. i'm very unhappy with the things he's done. >> reporter: trump's new choice for fbi director, kash patel, has been on capitol hill all week meeting with gop lawmakers. >> we look forward to a smooth transition of the fbi. i'll be ready on day one. >> reporter: senate democrats have voiced concerns over patel's nomination. >> the threat is that justice and our law enforcement agency are going to be weaponized for personal and political ends. >> reporter: concerns some republicans say they've discussed with patel directly. >> i urged patel to take a serious look at the fbi's priorities. >> reporter: trump arrived in new york to ring the opening bell at the stock exchange this morning. trump's team has invited chinese president xi jinping to his inauguration, and they're planning to invite more foreign leaders. that invitation to president xi came not long after trump won the election.

it's not clear if he's accepted. and carissa, no foreign leader has ever attended an american presidential inauguration, at least not since the state department started keeping records in the 1800s. this could potentially be unprecedented. back to you. >> sounds like it. thanks. new developments in the murder investigation of united healthcare ceo brian thompson. new york city police say they now have physical evidence linking the suspect, luigi mangione, to the crime, including the gun and fingerprints. detectives are also zeroing in on his writings including a spiral notebook in which he considered a different form of violence. the story from cbs' lilia luciano. >> reporter: for the first time the nypd says forensic evidence places the suspect at the location where united healthcare ceo brian thompson was shot and killed. >> we were able to match that gun to the three shell casings that we found in midtown at the scene of the homicide. we were also able at our crime

lab to match the person of interest's fingerprints with fingerprints that we found on both the water bottle and the kind bar near the scene of the homicide. >> reporter: nypd investigators say they collected that water bottle and wrapper near a starbucks where the suspect was seen on surveillance video about a half hour before thompson was murdered. the nypd also says they found a cellphone in an alley near the hotel with a fingerprint that matches, as well. richard esposito is a former nypd deputy commissioner and cbs news contributor. >> prosecutors are confident right now they have a solid case. but what they're doing is they're buttressing what they already have with further evidence. they'll try and will find a 3d printer. if they can show a ping to the cellphone and a picture of him using a cellphone that matched time match, they're going to present that. >> reporter: law enforcement sources tell cbs news mangione

had a spiral notebook with him when he was arrested, where he wrote about considering using a gun over a bomb to carry out an attack because it was targeted, precise, and doesn't risk innocence. voo -- innocents. >> i don't know that they have a confession, but i think they have enough facts, enough of a pattern of facts at this point to say this shows he was going to do it. we don't know. he may very well admit to police in custody that he did it. >> reporter: mangione's attorney said he will plead not guilty and is fighting his extradition to new york. ted simon is a philadelphia defense attorney -- who loses by that extradition not happening or not happening quickly? >> counsel has the benefit of spending more time with his client, learning more about the case, learning more about the circumstances and provide a greater opportunity for -- to developing a fulsome defense. >> reporter: when he's extradited to new york, there are plans to change charges from second-degree murder to

first-degree premeditated murder. those same sources say that during his time here in pennsylvania in custody, mangione has not made any incriminating statements. we have also confirmed that mangione's mother made a missing persons report with the san francisco police department just days before the shooting. lilia luciano, cbs news, pennsylvania. weather conditions are improving in southern california, helping firefighters battle a massive wildfire that tore through the coastal community of malibu. powerful santa ana winds helped to spread the franklin fire which has burned more than 4,000 acres and damaged or destroyed at least 15 structures. thousands of people have been forced to evacuate, including celebrities like dick van dyke and cher. the fire is 7% contained. the mysterious drone sightings over new jersey have people concerned and demanding information, but the government

has yet to give any concrete answers. one lawmaker is calling for a state of emergency, while another has an ominous theory about a foreign adversary. here's cbs' tom hanson. this is over my house. what is that? >> reporter: the million-dollar question baffling new jersey residents looking skyward. >> they're just pacing back and forth. going very slow. >> reporter: since last month dozens of drones mysteriously hovering in the skies at night. near morris county the faa has now ordered two temporary flight restrictions prohibiting drones over this military base and trump national golf club after receiving reports of unexplained active. -- activity. homeland security and state police met with some new jersey officials including the mayor. >> i don't believe they have any idea where the drones are coming from. >> reporter: many have questions including congressman jeff van drew who says individuals with high security clearance have a theory about where the drones come from. >> their concern is that a

mother ship has left from iran weeks ago, coinciding about the time somewhere along the area of the united states. it doesn't mean they're right off the coast. >> reporter: in a briefing pentagon officials dismised the claim outright. >> we have no evidence that these are coming from a foreign entity. >> reporter: in mendham, new jersey, the coffee shop is where the drones have been spotted. how big are these things? are they different sizes? >> they are the size of small cars. like almost like a mini cooper or ford escape size. it's not something that a kid is buying off of amazon and flying around as a prank. like it's way, way past that. >> reporter: and we're in front of the arsenal which manufactures munitions products for the u.s. military. it's also one of those sensitive sites where these drones have flown so close to. both lawmakers we spoke to say one of these drones needs to be

three brothers, two of whom are luxury real estate brokers, have been charged with sex trafficking. a federal indictment unsealed yesterday in new york accuses the oren, tal, and alon alexander of using their status and wealth to lure drug, sexual assaultee assault and rape dozens of women for more than a decade. they were arrested in florida where state charges were filed against two of the brothers and another man. lawyers for the brothers deny these allegations. the "los angeles times" says a hawaiian woman who was reported missing after landing at los angeles international airport has been found safe according to her family. hannah kobayashi's family reported her missing last month after she did not get on her connecting flights to new york during a stop in l.a. following a weeks' long search police said video showed her voluntarily crossing the border into mexico, and she was not a victim of foul play. her family did not say where she has been. and "the milwaukee journal sentinel" says a wisconsin man

who faked his own drowning and left his family was charged with obstruction after fleeing to the country of georgia to meet a woman there. police say ryan borgwardt voluntarily returned home and turned himself in to authorities on tuesday. there he is. investigators searched for his body for more than a month after he disappeared in august while kayaking. yesterday a judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf. he faces a possible nine-month jail sentence on the misdemeanor obstruction charge. straight ahead, love in the wild. how not even 100 miles could keep two siberian tigers apart. .
