now at 11:00, people out in scotts valley and across the bay area trying to clean up quickly as they can from yesterday's storm because here's another one on the way. then a robber hits a san francisco cafe and attacks customers with mace, the brave actions of a barista as he takes down the robbers to protect customers. >> i just stepped in and helped, but he is the hero. >> good evening. i'm brian hackney. >> i'm andrea nakano. a enough different day in the bay area compared to saturday. then is was out in most places as people picked up the pieces after yesterday's storm, including that rare tornado that touched down in scotts valley. >> but wait, there's more but not much more, i take it. darren peck is here with a look at what will shape up to be more wet weather coming in just in time for the morning drive. darren? >> that is a very good way to
11:02 pm
put this, brian. there is more, but in relation to what we had, it's not much more. if you look what's going on on the radar on the far northwest part of the bay area, a few light showers up there, barely anything. that's not the next system. let me show you what the next system looks like. we'll get a wide view from midnight to 6:00 a.m. tomorrow when we'll see the arrival of this next rainmaker to bring widespread rain, but with nowhere near the intensity of the last storm. remember, we're looking at midnight through 6:00 a.m. it keeps going from there. i just wanted to get you to the start of this. this is going to be in the north bay up until sunrise tomorrow. so your morning commute is going to be a wet one up there, but it does continue from that point on. the rain works its way south and goes down the peninsula, gets down to the south bay through the remainder of the afternoon, so just a quick follow-up on that. here's what it looks like in totality just to watch that system come in and stop it where we just were and now watch it play through
11:03 pm
into the remainder of the day. plan on scattered showers once you get into late morning and afternoon for everybody else, but the totals aren't big. i'll show you those in the complete forecast and there's another that's going to get here on saturday. we'll see what the thinking is on that at this point. for now, back to you. >> thank you. in scotts valley the cleanup effort will continue tomorrow after crews worked all day today to clear as much debris left behind by yesterday's tornado. da lin was back out there talking with locals about what it was like when it touched down and what it's going to take to put things back together. >> reporter: the power has been restored and a lot of the debris has been removed. this white van is waiting to be towed, but the cleanup has been very efficient. the tornado touched down here in the middle of mount herman road, the main street in this town. >> oh, my god. okay. oh, my god. >> reporter: more than 24 hours
11:04 pm
later still an unbelievable sight, many scotts valley residents who saw the f-1 tornado call it a mind blowing experience. >> i've lived in california my whole life and never seen anything like this. >> it was a big roar and it truly sounded like a train. >> i've never seen cars tossed like that. that was really, really unusual. >> reporter: john lingham saw the twister driving home. city officials say that fun cloud turned into a tornado as it touched down and spun a third of a mile. >> lamp poles down, everything you could imagine. >> reporter: first responders and witnesses say powerful winds overturned seven vehicles and injured five people. most of them were drivers. >> when it happened, i was kind of in shock. i wasn't really thinking about it, but like seeing those people flipped over in the cars and just crawling out of their cars kind
11:05 pm
of like puts it into perspective. >> reporter: vice-mayor derek tim said as of sunday one person remained in the hospital. >> we had a cal fire vehicle flipped, a large commuter van that flipped. >> reporter: the strong winds destroyed 15 traffic lights and uprooted a very large tree which landed on a metal school building. by sunday many downed trees were cleared out and life in scotts valley started to return to normal. >> this hit right in the center of town. mount herman road where it hit is the second busiest street in the entire santa cruz county area. so it's the most traveled. it hit right at 1:30 in the afternoon. things were hopping in all our centers here. so when the tornado came through, we got amazingly lucky. it really was a miracle no one was killed. >> reporter: john agrees very thankful no fatalities. he's glad that pg&e and other utilities restored power and communication lines. >> in addition to all the first
11:06 pm
responders, you saw people just stopping their cars and clearing the streets and helping each other. it was great. >> reporter: city officials say all the traffic lights should be back to normal by monday. there were a lot of shoppers at the time. >> da lin down in scotts valley. back in the bay area the aftermath of the storm is still felt as well as you can tell by this live look at the current pg&e outages. the latest numbers show more than 6,000 customers still in the dark more than 24 hours later. pg&e says tomorrow's rain should not impact their efforts to turn the lights back on, but they also don't have an exact time frame on when that will be. >> we've seen a lot of vegetation impacting our lines, trees down, wire down, that sort of thing. if there's a conductor in the road, that sort of thing, crews will first and foremost make sure the scene is safe for the public and first responders. >> pg&e says in the event of a

power outage you should have devices fully charged. if you've got a generator, make sure it's working and check pg&e's website for updates and be sure you have the cbs news app. download it before tomorrow's rain rolls in. you'll be able to get the very latest live radar and forecasts as well as on our website, kpix.com. in other news tonight, shocking scenes at a cafe in the mission. you can see a man come in and immediately begin attacking a customer, eventually spraying mace inside the store. thankfully, for everyone inside, a barista quickly jumped into action and took the man down. our amanda hari went out there today to speak with him and some customers who also tried to help. >> reporter: the man who work here at carlin's cafe is being called a hero. luckily, he is okay and so is the man who was the target of the robbery. he was actually back at the cafe the next morning.
11:08 pm
surveillance video caught the moment someone tried to rob a customer at carlin's cafe early friday morning. nick grant was behind the counter when the masked man walked inside and went directly for a customer's backpack. that's when grant sprung into action. >> i realized he was in a situation where he needed help. >> reporter: things escalated quickly. you could see the men exchange punches before the masked man sprays bear mace at grant. grant says it temporarily blinded him and he still has injuries on his face and arm, but has no regrets. right before the attempted robbery jim carroll was walking with his wife to the gym. he saw the man masked and dressed in dark clothing walking towards them. he was worried they were going to get robbed, but says he just kept walking right into the cafe. >> without even thinking i just ran towards the restaurant. >> reporter: in the video you can see carroll run through the door and immediately tries to
11:09 pm
help grant. >> i was on the phone with 911 and i tried to assess the situation, figure out which one was the robber, figured out which one it was and put my arm around his neck. >> reporter: grant then held the suspect down for more than six minutes waiting for police to arrive. they've identified the suspect as 42-year-old amir moner of concord. he was transported and booked in san francisco county jail for both this incident and other active warrants. grant and carroll are grateful everyone is okay and made new friendships through a situation that could have been tragic. >> i feel a new connection with my community and the owner, matt, is just an awesome guy and nick, nick's the real hero. i just stepped in and helped, but he is the hero. >> reporter: the cafe did shut down for a short time after the attempted robbery to clean up, but they're now back operating at their normal business hours.
11:10 pm
>> that's amanda hari. still ahead tonight at 11:00, could we see a verdict tomorrow in the bob lee murder trial? the jury is set to begin their third week of deliberations. later, countless drones continue to cause quite a buzz over new jersey. we'll talk live with an astronomer to get his take on what may be going on there. that's coming up. - man, i need some serious help with this health insurance stuff. - check out covered california. it's a free service from the state that helps you get health insurance. millions of people have used it. - wait, for real? - mmm hmm, they even offer financial help to lower the cost. - nooo... how you know about all this? - that's how i got my insurance. i got a great plan for about $10 dollars a month. - okay, i see you. - if you've got questions, covered california can help, every step of the way. enroll by december 31st. covered california. this way to health insurance.

i know we want to get updated on what's happening tomorrow and the amounts and all that kind of stuff, but you know what, darren? i really like the way you said i'm going to give you our thinking about next saturday because it sounded a little ominous. >> the only reason i put it that way is because it's sunday night. so to go out to saturday, can't lock that in stone yet, but there's growing confidence it's going to be a garden variety rainmaker and it shows no sign of being anything like what came through yesterday. it's probably going to be a lot like what's coming tomorrow. that's really the best way to think about this. the first one's tomorrow. we'll put the big picture view on the futurecast so you can kind of see how the storm is put together. first take a look at this thing out in the pacific, a beautiful display of
11:13 pm
yet another good looking storm that's coming across the pacific and aimed at our general direction. look at that beautiful comma shape and we are that batch of lights right there underneath that leading edge. there's the daylight view. let's get a little bit more of a look ahead. we'll watch it twice again. we're looking at tomorrow's rain. there's the leading edge which shows up and you can see the showers come through in one well organized line, not a big rotating circular area of low pressure like yesterday's storm was. we're back to garden variety storms around here in the way they typically tend to behave. let's get a better handle on that. i'm going to pick up where we left off last time because we want to time this out for your morning commute. the first thing that we'll do is we will spotlight the north bay in the morning. let's come in for a closer look, step that down to the bay. we can go lock step in time here and right there take a moment, pause it. look at the rainfall as we go into the early morning hours. we're
11:14 pm
looking in the 3:00, 4:00 hour tomorrow as showers work their way through the north bay. they work from there southward, get down in the golden gate around 5:00, 6:00, moved up a little bit in time even since we were looking at this over the course of the last three hours when we checked in on this last. it's not a significant change, but the rain comes in a little earlier. that means this now has a bigger role to play for that morning commute as we work our way from san francisco down the peninsula down to the south bay. we're now looking at 11 a.m., so really from sunrise through 10:00 in the morning there's rain. it's not steady, nonstop, continuance wall of rain. these are on again, off again showers. you'll get a little wave comes through, get a break, then another little wave. it will go like that until about 1:00 p.m. and then it's done. look at the totals. those aren't huge, about a half inch of rain in the north bay and could be an
11:15 pm
equal opportunity rainmaker. i mean everybody comes away with pretty much about the same amount. this is not one of those systems that really has it in for the north bay more than everybody else, but in either case it's not all that much anyway. so it's a far more manageable system. let's talk about that seven-day forecast now and share what we're thinking about saturday. you see it in the seven-day. there's our rain monday. nothing happens for the rest of the week. in fact, if we are broad brushing the bay as low to mid-60s, some of our warmer inland valleys by thursday, the peak, will be near 70. in fact, downtown san jose might get to 70 on thursday. it's going to be a really nice week and then we get to a pretty busy and important weekend. this is the holiday weekend leading into the holiday week. that rain on saturday at this point probably puts down about another half inch, just at this point in the forecast replay what we just looked at for tomorrow and that comes through saturday, can't

"gameday" at the bottom of the hour. come on, what playoff chances do the 49ers really have? >> obviously it's slim. >> new beginnings for the new san francisco giants shortstop. >> i know we'll put up a show. how did the warriors fare against the fourth-ranked offense and tenth-ranked defense and, oh, klay thompson plays for them, too? those stories and more on "gameday" after the newscast. ♪ (♪♪)

tomorrow the jury will reconvene for delay seven of deliberations in the murder trial of nima momeni accused of stabbing tech executive bob lee last april. prosecutors say momeni attacked lee because he was angry about an incident involving lee and his sister. momeni and his defense team argue he was acting in self-defense. shannan dugan, a defense attorney who has followed the proceedings from the courtroom, says jurors have had a lot to digest throughout this trial. >> from my perspective, i think

it's a good thing the jury is taking a long time. it means they understand the gravity of the situation. i don't know if that's going to be a verdict of guilty, an acquittal or hung jury, but i suspect they'll come back with something on monday. >> but if the jury cannot come to an agreement, a hung jury would result in a mistrial and the case would have to be retried from the beginning with a new jury. the jury is expected to return tomorrow afternoon and we will, of course, bring you the verdict as soon as it comes in. you can find all of our coverage on this trial on our website, kpix.com, and the free cbs news app. coming up next, theories about the mysterious drone sightings in new jersey have ranged from foreign spies to aliens. after the break, we're talking live with dr.

well, the department of homeland security tonight sending more personnel to new jersey to try to get to the bottom of those mysterious drone sightings out there or are they drones? they also tried to assure americans today there is no known foreign involvement in these sightings. at the same time, new york's governor and a few members of congress are pushing for a new law that would strengthen the

faa's oversight of drones. incoming white house national security adviser mike waltz told us today americans need answers. >> we need to know who is behind it. they could be coming from offshore and we need to take a hard look at our homeland defenses. >> let me set the record straight here, george. there are thousands of drones flown every day in the united states, recreational drones, commercial drones. that is the reality. >> some have called the reaction of the multiple sightings hysteria. officials say that of the 5,000 drone tips received, fewer than 100 required follow-up, but it really does have people interested. so we wanted to pick the brains behind the seti institute in mountain view. we're joined live tonight by their senior astronomer dr. seth shostak, an author and phd in astrophysics from cal tech. it's good to see you. thanks for staying up late to talk to

11:26 pm
run into trees or houses or who knows what, but i do fly it recreationally. it doesn't go up very high, a couple hundred feet maybe, but that's what this drone looks like to me. so i just think it's probably a recreational drone. if it were aliens, that would be really interesting, but there's no indication that has anything to do anything beyond earth. >> when you see some of the video of some of these things, i was just looking at the video tonight and thought that's a plane. i think a lot of these are unless the aliens are following our red and green running light rules in the u.s., but in the other cases, a lot of people have suddenly piled on with this. do you think that's because there really are more drones up there or just because a lot of people are imagining they're seeing this stuff? >> well, again it plays into the whole ufo phenomenon. of course, today we call them uap, unidentified aerial phenomenon, but it's the same thing. people like this idea. there
11:27 pm
have been polls of the public in the past several years that show something like 70% of the american public believes that the aliens are out there. so it isn't that they doubt there are aliens, but a similar fraction, 70 or 80%, believe that they're visiting earth and the federal government is covering up the news. i've got to tell you i used to work for the federal government in washington, d.c. and i was never convinced that they would be very good at covering something up. >> i'll take it from you. you've had a lot of experience with this. on the other hand, the runways at stuart international about 60 miles north of new york city, they had to close the runway because of all the air sightings. do you agree something needs to be done about it? >> yeah. look, they could pose a hazard to air navigation. if a commercial jet were taken off and sucked a drone into one of its engines, that could have an unfortunate consequence, no doubt about that. the only thing that i'm contesting is
11:28 pm
the idea that this phenomenon has anything to do with aliens or visitors to earth. this is earthly technology and mostly recreational technology. i mean there are drones that are used for purposes like surveying cropland and stuff like that. there are a lot of uses for drones, but probably not so many at night and over new jersey, well, north of new jersey for anybody who has been there, you know, it's a very crowded place. there are all sorts of cities there. there are airports there. you know, i just think that this is the sort of thing that you're going to see happen every couple of months simply because of the density of the population there. >> i've got to ask you one last quick question. one person raised this issue, a resident of new jersey, that said how can you say it's not posing a threat if you can't say what it is? >> well, not everything that you can't identify poses a threat, right? if it were something to worry about,
11:29 pm
you'd have i think some indication of that, right, that it would head for -- i don't know -- for manhattan maybe, that it would have enough of a heft, enough of a, you know, enough size and mass to be able to carry weaponry of some sort, right? >> right. >> there's no indication of that. nobody knows how big it is. a lot of people make estimates that they say it's maybe the size of a small car, but it's very difficult to know how big it is unless you know how far away it is which generally speaking, and especially at night, you don't know. >> yes. >> so i think that if you got something else to worry about, i would choose for that. >> okay. i think it's interesting 86 year after "war of the worlds" that again all of this stuff is happening in new jersey. that's where orson wells picked to have the martians land back then. probably something needs to be done to perhaps crack down on some of this. >> i think it's in the interest of new jersey to
