drone detectors. the feds launch a new state of the art technology to help identify the mysterious sightings in the skies. there are growing calls to do more. rare tornado, terror and destruction after a twister hit central california. and return to new york. why the suspected ceo killer may stop fighting his extradition from pennsylvania this week. good morning, i'm michael george. we start with those mysterious drone sightings in multiple states along the east coast. the feds are sending help to both new york and new jersey to try to track where they're coming from, but some say it's not enough. it comes as boston police made two arrests over the weekend after a drone came dangerously close to logan international airport. cbs's naomi ruchim joins with the latest calls for help. there's a lot of panic over the drones but right now no clear answers. >> no idea specifically where they're coming from or if they

truly are dangerous, michael. good morning to you. these reports now span multiple states including new york, new jersey, pennsylvania, maryland, connecticut and massachusetts. in some cases briefly shutting down airport runways. in other cases spotted near military installations. now state leaders are fed up and pleading with the feds for help. >> it's hovering. it's sitting right there. >> reporter: mysterious drone sightings over multiple states, including new jersey, have led to widespread confusion and growing calls for answers. >> americans are finding it hard to believe we can't figure out where these are coming from. >> reporter: the department of homeland security and the fbi are investigating the drone sightings. the agencies say so far there's no evidence of a current threat to public safety or foreign influence. the fbi has already received thousands of tips on the sightings, though it says fewer than 100 of those have produced any credible leads.

>> there are thousands of drones flown every day in the united states. >> reporter: homeland security secretary alejandro mayorkas says his agency is sending more resources and personnel to new jersey to help local authorities there address the sightings. new york's governor says her state will also receive federal support. but mayorkas and other experts point out that more tools are needed to be able to deal with the growing threats that unmanned aircraft can pose. >> only parts of the department of justice, department of homeland security and department of defense are allowed to detect and mitigate drones. that means drones are going to have the upper hand because our authorities are woefully inadequate. >> reporter: now some members of congress are pushing for legislation to also give state and local governments the technology and authority to track drones. in a social media post over the weekend president-elect donald trump said he believes the government knows more about

these drone sightings than it's letting on saying let the public know and now, otherwise, shoot them down. as of now, the pentagon remains adamant it is leaving all investigations up to local law enforcement and the fbi, michael. no clue when these could potentially stop when we know so many people have home drones at their own houses. >> right. we'll continue to keep watching. naomi ruchim. thanks. several people were injured after a tornado ripped through a california city outside of san francisco. >> okay. oh, my god. oh, my god, no. >> those terrifying moments played out near a mall in scotts valley on saturday afternoon. officials say the twister overturned cars, toppled trees and utility poles. in san francisco they issued the first ever tornado warning in the city. the damage was reported there, but that was due to gusty winds, not a tornado. and at least one person is dead after a major ice storm hit

iowa and be eastern nebraska friday evening into saturday. officials say the 57-year-old was killed in it a crash after losing control of her pickup truck on a highway. you can see how treacherous the conditions were as cars skidded along the slick roads. the storm prompted temporary closures of interstate 80 after numerous accidents. a 26-year-old suspect accused of killing unitedhealthcare ceo brian thompson could be brought back to manhattan as early as this week to officially face charges. now he has a new high profile attorney. cbs's ali bauman has the latest. >> reporter: new details about luigi mangione's prison cell. 15 by 6 foot concrete space. he has a bed, desk, snk, toilet. no tv or window. he may be moved to new york's notorious rikers island jail. alvin bragg indicated mangione may waive extradition as his

office investigates the murder. >> we could see him be transferred as soon as that evening or that day. >> reporter: mangione this weekend hired new york city attorney karen fried man agnifilo who up to three years ago served as second in command at the manhattan d.a.'s office. >> so this is a big get for him? >> huge get. we know he comes from a family of means. he can afford the best defense attorney in the country, and by all accounts he has retained one. >> reporter: mangione's dark fandom grows. a crowd sourced fund-raiser for his legal fund has generated more than $100,000. sympathy for the victim overshadowed by what appears to be a tsunami of support for the suspect, by those angered at the health insurance industry. at a dance party in boston this weekend the crowd erupted in cheers when photos of mangione were projected on the stage. a new warning from the center

reporting at least several hundred people have died after a devastating cyclone hit the island of mayotte off the eastern coast of africa. the death toll in the french territory is expected to rise. saturday's major cyclone caused widespread damage flattening entire neighborhoods and knocking out power. strong storms destroyed two russian tankers causing an oil spill. the vessels were in the kurd straight between mainland russia and crimea. one crew member killed, 13 others rescued. there is a rescue mission for the 14 other people on the second tanker. they were carrying almost 9,000 tons of fuel oil. a cyber attack on rhode island and nancy pelosi undergoes surgery. those are some of the headlines we're following on "the morning newstand." npr reports former house speaker nancy pelosi had hip replacement surgery after injuring herself on a trip abroad. her spokesperson says the

surgery was successful and the 84-year-old california democrat is well on the mend. she was in luxembourg to mark the 82nd be anniversary of the battle of the bulge. it happened during an official engagement but didn't provide details. surgery took place at a u.s. military hospital in germany. ap reports on a major cyber attack that hit rhode island. the governor says the attack targeted the state's online system for delivering health and human services benefits. they stole thousands of people's information and are threatening to release it. hackers are demanding a ransom. may include names, addresses, birth dates, social security numbers and banking information. and the des moines register reports on a case of possible animal neglect involving an emaciated bulldog. police are investigating after the bulldog was found in a plastic trash bag near a railroad track. the bag was closed off with tape with only the dog's head sticking out.

he's now only the second heisman winner in the school's history. actor jamie foxx is recovering after being hit in the mouth with a glass. spokesperson says a fight broke out friday at a beverly hills restaurant as foxx was celebrating his birthday. a person at another table apparently threw the glass. foxx had to get stitches but is otherwise okay. it's unclear what prompted the incident. foxx told fans on instagram he's, quote, too blessed to be stressed. billie eilish is the latest singer to be hit by an object thrown on a stage. it happened friday during her concert in arizona. you can see someone in the audience threw what appeared to be a neck class or bracelet at her. she flashed an annoyed look before placing the object aside. luckily she's okay. this weekend supreme court justice ketanji brown jackson fulfilled a childhood dream by making her broadway debut. >> i think what i like about it
