school tragedy. another american community in mourning after a teenage girl opens fire inside her school just days before holiday break. >> i was really scared and i was really sad. >> we all send prayers and thoughts. when are we going to stop doing that. this is not okay. >> why did she do it? this morning the search for answers as police dig into the shooter's past. good morning, i'm michael george. scenes of bloodshed and sorrow play out all too often in cities and towns, large and small, across the nation sparing no one and no school from america's gun epidemic. here's the latest. the shooter has been identified as 15-year-old natali samantha rupnow who police say died from a self-inflicted gunshot. the victim's a teacher and teenage student. six others wounded, two of them

critically. it happened at a small private christian school in madison, wisconsin. naomi ruchim joins us with the investigation. we've been here so many times. a female shooter, extremely rare. what do we know about the suspect? >> it is extremely rare. so hard to report on this so many times over the year. the shootings seem to be too common sadly. the fact that the shooter was a teenage girl is quite unusual. in fact, according to violence prevention project there have only been four or five female mass shooters in the last five decades, and as of this morning police are still searching for why this young woman opened fire. singing, prayers and tears at a vigil last night as a community in madison, wisconsin, comes to grips with a tragic school shooting. >> we had a call coming in at abundant life christian church advising someone was shot.

>> reporter: police arrived minutes after. a second grader called to report an active shooter just before 11 a.m. at the small private abundant life christian school. >> let that soak in for a minute, a second grade student called 911. >> reporter: this sixth grader said he heard the gunshots while sitting in english class. >> we heard them and then some people started crying and then just waited until the police came. >> reporter: police say one teenage student and one teacher were killed. six other people were wounded. a speaker at last night's vigil said the teacher was a substitute for another educator who had called out sick. meanwhile, police have identified the shooter as 15-year-old student natali rupnow who went by the name sam samantha. they say she was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital adding that a 9 millimeter handgun was recovered from the scene. >> we're not going to rush the information. we'll take our time and make sure that we do our due

diligence. >> reporter: investigators have searched the 15-year-old's home and they say her family is cooperating with the investigation as police try to determine a motive. the shooting comes during the final week of classes before the school's christmas break. police say at least two of those wounded in in the shooting have been released from the hospital while two students have life threatening, critical injuries. madison police chief last night said his agency is working with state and federal law enforcement in their investigation but they are pleading with the public not to believe everything they read online about the shooter or a motive, michael. hard to believe we are here yet again so close to the end of the year. >> yes, it is. naomi ruchim. thanks for joining us. breaking overnight, the head of russia's nuclear and biological chemical defense forces was killed by a bomb outside an apartment building. they say the explosive device was hidden in an electric

schooler. lieutenant general igor kirillov and his assistant died. he was charged with the alleged use of banned chemical weapons in ukraine which russia denies. they tell cbs news the explosion is the work of the ukrainian security service. the russian woman accused of stowing away on a delta airlines flight from new york to paris has been arrested again. the fbi says svetlana dali is in custody in buffalo and scheduled to appear in court today. she cut off her ankle monitor and was on a bus to canada when she was arrested yesterday. she's accused of sneaking on to a delta flight at jfk last month without a boarding pass. now to the trump transition and the president-elect's first news conference since winning the election. he covered a wide range of topics from the economy to tiktok to vaccines. cbs's caitlin huey-burns reports from mar-a-lago. >> reporter: in his first press

conference since winning the election last month, president-elect donald trump defended his choice of vaccine skeptic robert f. kennedy jr. to lead the department of health and human services. >> i think he's going to be much less radical than you would think. >> reporter: kennedy, a former democrat, would oversee the fda and cdc. they petitioned the fda in 2022 to revoke the polio vaccine. in a statement republican senator mitch mcconnell, a polio survivor, issued a warning to kennedy calling any effort to undermine confidence in the vaccine dangerous. >> do you want rfk jr. to revoke any vaccine? >> no. i want him to come back with a report as to what he thinks. you're not going to lose the polio vaccine. that's not going to happen. >> reporter: kennedy echoed trump as he arrived on capitol hill to meet with senators. as kennedy and other cabinet picks curry support on capitol hill this week, trump suggested

he could support primary challenges to republicans who opposed his selections. >> if they're unreasonable, if they're opposing somebody for political reasons or stupid reasons, i would say has nothing to do with me, i would say they probably would be primaried. >> reporter: at his mar-a-lago resort trump joined soft bank ceo son to announce the japanese company will invest $100 billion in american projects. >> and he's doing this because he feels very optimistic about our country since the election. >> reporter: son is the latest tech leader to visit trump in florida. the ceos of apple and google met with trump in recent days and amazon ceo jeff bezos is slated to visit later this week. trump welcomed the ceo of tiktok to mar-a-lago as the social media site asked the supreme court to block a law that would ban the platform. >> i have a warm spot in my heart for tiktok because i won

youth by 34 points and there are those that say tiktok had something to do with that. >> reporter: it was actually vice president harris who won the youth vote though trump did make gains. and on foreign policy trump said ukrainian president zelenskyy should be prepared to make a deal with russian president putin to end the war, though he wouldn't say whether ukraine should give up any of its territory. caitlin huey-burns, cbs news, west palm beach, florida. donald trump without any evidence accused the biden administration of covering up what's behind the drone mystery that's concerning and perplexing millions of people in new jersey and other eastern states. cbs's tom hanson has the new developments. >> thank you very much. >> reporter: president-elect trump accused the biden administration of keeping americans in the dark on drones. >> the government knows what is happening, and for some reason they want to keep people in suspense. >> what is that? >> reporter: the sightings

fueling fuel and concern. alejandro mayorkas said there is no national security threat. >> we know of no foreign involvement with respect to the sightings in the northeast. >> reporter: but mayorkas did say the federal government has deployed additional resources to assist new jersey state police. >> that's concerning. >> reporter: shaun golden is the monmouth county sheriff. >> the majority of the sightings, probably some type of commercial or recreational aircraft, manned aircraft. >> reporter: there have been more than a thousand drone sightings in new jersey in less than a month according to the sheriff. he showed us this heat map that tracks them. >> so just walk me through what we're seeing. >> yeah. it's just various mapping. i mean, this is the heat map that we have. pretty much you can see the area of the county covered. this breaks it down by town, if you will. so the more calls, the hotter it gets. >> reporter: trump called for people to shoot them down on his truth social network, something sheriff golden called a bad idea. >> some are described as, you

"the new york times" reports a judge denied donald trump's bid to throw out the hush money conviction. he was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up payments to former porn star stormy daniels ahead of the 2016 election. trump denies any wrongdoing. prosecutors argue the supreme court's decision has no bearing on the case since trump was convicted of crimes that took place before he became president. "the boston globe" says two men face federal charges in connection with a deadly drone

attack on a u.s. military base in jordan. the january attack killed three american service members and wounded dozens of others. one suspect, a dual iranian-american citizen was arrested in boston. the other arrested in italy. the justice department is seeking to extradite him. they're accused of illegally exporting sensitive technology to iran that was used to develop the weapon involved in the attack. and "people" magazine report the hawaiian woman who disappeared after arriving in los angeles speaking out after returning to the u.s. saying her focus is now on her healing. hannah kobayashi also says she was unaware of the widespread media coverage of the search for her when she didn't board her connecting flight to new york during a stop in l.a. last month. last week her family said she was found safe after earlier surveillance video showed her voluntarily crossing the border into mexico. well, coming up ahead, a cartoon sailor sheds his

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. well, it was an early christmas for some four legged friends in dublin, ireland. dogs got to celebrate santa paws day by choosing their own gift. hundreds of donated toys were lined up in a room and one by one the excited dogs went for what they wanted. excited was an understatement. prince harry and meghan markle have unveiled their 2024 holiday card. it includes one picture giving us a rare glimpse of the couple's two children. 5-year-old prince archie and 3-year-old princess lillibet. they are shown from behind. lillibet confirming her father's comments that she now has long red hair.
