week, but they found momeni guilty of second-degree murder for the deadly stabbing last april. cameras were not allowed in the courtroom, but momeni was seen wiping away the tears after the verdict was read aloud. and whether nima momeni meant to kill bob lee. our lauren toms has been following the trial from day one. >> reporter: well in the words of the judge, a solemn day inside the courtroom as the verdict was read convicting nima momeni of murder in the second degree. now this is a sizable step down from his initial charge of first-degree murder, but still with the potential of a hefty life sentence. and now this is not the end of the road for either party. both intertwined in loss, but committed to justice for their loved ones. after six weeks of a trial that captured national attention, in seven days of deliberations, the words guilty of murder in the

second degree echoed inside a silent courtroom. for bob lee's family, it will mark the start of healing. >> and a good full day of rest to take a nice easy weekend for sure. like i said, it is far from over, but it's a little bit of a rest today. >> reporter: over the course of the trial, jurors grappled of what happened on april 4, 2023. prosecutors painted nima momeni as an overprotective brother who set out to stab lee after an argument over momeni's sister. while the defense said momeni was only defending himself against lee. who would attack him while high on drugs. >> this is obviously very disappointing for us. >> reporter: a conviction of second-degree murder will require prosecutors to prove the killing was intentional, but without premeditation. >> they did not believe nima momeni's testimony, based on all of the evidence that came in. they did not believe he

acted in self-defense, and they found beyond a reasonable doubt. >> reporter: the defense plotting their next steps. hinting at appeals after multiple calls for a mistrial fell flat. >> we're going to analyze it this while we have time to calmly go through what the legal issues were. if there were decisions that were made and evidence that was presented that should not have been, we'll take that up. mr. momeni will continue to have a right to fight for their freedom. this is a very painful day. this is not the end of the story. >> reporter: after the verdict, district attorney, brooke jenkins, weighing in on the evidence she believes swayed the jury in favor of the conviction, including text messages where his sister, khazar, referred to her brother as psycho. >> i think the text message evidence in particular that signaled kind of what was going on in the state of mind between mr. momeni and his sister and that conversation. i think his conduct after the fact as well

and how he operated after that murder and what happened with his phones and other things. i think they were a sign of a guilty conscience. >> reporter: momeni faces 16 years to life for his actions under the darkened bridge. the verdict marking an end to a case that shook san francisco to its core. >> a lot of shame was put on our city. our city was painted in a very negative light. not only nationally, but internationally by people who would have no idea on what happened here. it's a testament. let us investigate what happened. and make sure that when you say something, you know what you're talking about. >> it was an extremely emotional day for family and friends on both sides of the case. the district attorney, brooke jenkins, you just heard her speak. she was seen hugging bob lee's daughter inside the courtroom earlier. our max darrow reports on how family members on both sides are reacting to this and shows us

what the mother told him. after the verdict was read. >> reporter: sara, this is a long and drawn out process for everybody involved. tonight, bob lee's family and friends will be sleeping a little easier, applauding the jury's decision, while his mother says this is a sad story throughout. 18 months after former tech executive bob lee was stabbed and killed in san francisco, his brother, timothy l oliver lee, was finally able to let out a sigh of relief. >> can you take us to the moment you heard the words, guilty? >> my heart just like -- i don't know. and all the emotions at once. >> reporter: lee has been in court for almost every day of the trial. anxiously waiting as they deliberated for seven days before coming to the verdict of second-degree murder. >> this is an extremely hard process to be able to try to get through and to just live through. >> reporter: despite that, he commended the jury for coming

to their decision. >> the longer it went on, the more we were talking about what would happen in the room today. we are glad they came to the right conclusion and they took the time to come to the conclusion. what matters today, we had a guilty verdict and that nima momeni is going away for a very long time. us, the family, and those kids, they will not have to see him on the streets. >> reporter: and they didn't mince words as they haven't throughout the duration of the trial. >> we're pleased with the guilty verdict. murder one would have been better, but let's get this man sentenced and put him back in that orange jump suit. >> this man deserves life it in prison as far as i'm concerned. i'm glad he's off the streets. >> it is a sad story in general. someone is being, you know, someone is dead. >> reporter: nima momeni's mom offered her condolences to lee's family, but maintained her son was acting in

unitedhealthcare ceo has been indicted on upgraded charges including first-degree murder and furtherance of terrorism. luigi mangione is already facing 11 charges in new york in connection with the murder of brian thompson. mangione was arrested at a mcdonald's in pennsylvania last monday. pennsylvania police said he had a ghost give up that new york investigators claim matches shell casings found at the crime scene. >> this was a frightening, well-planned, targeted murder, that was intended to cause shock and attention and intimidation. >> mangione is currently being held in pennsylvania. he may be moved to new york city to face new felony charges as early as thursday. well, in california starting tomorrow, new rules are going into effect, aimed at cracking down on retail theft. voters in our state overwhelmingly backed prop 36 in a landslide vote. that goes into effect tomorrow. retailers have done what they can to make

it harder to shoplift. if you have ever gone to a big grocery chain or pharmacy in san francisco, you know the drill. everything is completely locked down. this san francisco walgreens store even chained their freezers at one point with food inside of it. now the question is will stores take down the pleaches city glass and loosen up security measures after the new law takes effect? the experts say if that were to happen, it probably wouldn't be any time soon. >> we know when there will be a consequence for their behavior, we know that's the best deterrent to get people to stop from stealing. >> tonight, sheng thao is out as mayor of oakland after voters recalled her. city council members declared a vacancy in the mayor's office, leaving council president, nikki fortunato bas, as interim mayor. but she won't be there for long, leaving a leadership gap at the top of the city facing a monumental budget

shortfall. kevin ko was at city hall for a start of a new era in oakland. >> reporter: it was a packed house inside city hall for oakland's first city council meeting of the year without an official mayor. many were seeking answers on the city's $130 million budget shortfall, but they left with more questions on who will be the interim mayor of oakland in the new year. >> reporter: bhat arrived at oakland city hall to talk about the budget, but was taken back by the city officials he didn't see. >> it was just disrespectful. not to see all the city council members sitting in the chambers to hear our voice and our concerns. this is a very important meeting. it's the last meeting for some of the outgoing city council members. >> reporter: there was no absence of emotion inside city hall tuesday night, as oaklanders across the city demanded council members to fix the budget shortfall without

touching necessities like public safety and senior citizens. and they believe any cuts should start inside the building he's standing in. >> i want a real truthful leadership. start from the top all the way to the bottom. >> reporter: sheng thao briefly joined tuesday's council meetings via zoom. someone who was there, nikki fortunato bas, who is taking over as oakland's interim mayor. but she's leaving next month to be an alameda county supervisor. as soon as the three newly elected council members are sworn in on january 6, their immediate task will be electing a new council president. >> what people should anticipate, there will be a lot of jostling behind the scenes amongst the city council members to determine which one of them will become the board president, which one of them will become the interim mayor of oakland, california. >> reporter: political analyst, justin burton says whoever oakland city council members

choose, they will face some of the toughest decisions when it comes to cutting services. >> the new leadership of oakland will be facing hard decisions, and they need to be able to make them. we know if you don't make hard decisions right now, you will need to make heartbreaking ones it in june. so i think we were ready to pull the band-aid on and get the city straight. >> reporter: it if those hard decisions aren't made, burton says oakland could fall off a financial cliff into bankruptcy. as for the vacancy in the mayor's office, a special election will be held on april 15. if you think your commute home takes forever, these two people stranded in space would like a word. and near santa cruz, a decision to make a quick trip inside a target store kept a man out of a tornado's path. his truck did not fair as well. nothing quite that dramatic in today's weather. the fog starting to have an impact on today's temperatures, reaching into the mid-50s for san

the san francisco watering hole. a car plowed right into the front of the miraloma club on portola drive not far from twin peaks. san francisco fire says two people inside the bar were hurt. they had to be taken to the hospital. no word yet on what led up to the crash or what happened to the driver. it is unusual to see a car plunge into a pool outdoors. this is even rare. this car smashed through a fitness center's glass wall and landed in the indoor pool. the car was submerged in the pool. it happened at a 24-hour fitness in redland down in southern california. firefighters used a pulley to hoist the car out of the car and through the hole in the wall. the driver escaped with minor injuries. luckily nobody was swimming when this happened. being stuck at work after you're suppose to go home feels criminal. >> it's not a great feeling. >> very few people that we know enjoy that sort of thing. but imagine being held over for ten

down power lines as we've been talking about it. it flipped multiple vehicles. it left five people hurt. it is not a good situation. >> just wild stuff. wild day overall. >> it really was. it had dash cam video is recorded in a truck that flipped over in that tornado. the owner posted online and wrote the dash cam was rolling inside the target store. >> it's about to get good. >> yeah. the video really shows you just how fast the conditions change. in a few seconds when the tornadoes touch down. >> and that is what the wind could do. this is a weak tornado. i mean ef1, there's six levels on the enhancement scale. and this is the second lowest level. that kind of wind is enough to flip cars, bring down trees, and power lines. but yeah, turn every branch on that tree into a missile. >> and that guy's car was totaled? >> i can imagine. you should see cars that have been through

an ef4 or 5. just a ball of metal. >> the videos that come out are horrific. >> it is incredible, but just air and water. that's all you can do. air and water moving very, very fast. hopefully it's a long time. let's talk a look at what we're in for the next couple of days. quiet weather pattern has settled in. area of high pressure, basically a hill of air has nudged the storm track further to the north. impacting the behavior of the fog because the weight of the atmosphere, exerting higher pressure is kind of squishing that fog layer a little bit. it's not as deep as it was last night, but the fog level will dissipate tomorrow. sunshine with passing clouds. and they stay up to the north through the workweek. there is the fog in the distance. temperatures, retreating mostly to the 40s in san francisco. the dense fog

advisory goes through 9:00 tomorrow morning, not for the entire bay area. this is confined of the dense fog advisory we had last night to this morning, including most of the inland valleys of the bay side. and san francisco has been excluded from the dense fog advisory. i'd allow five to ten extra minutes tomorrow morning to navigate through some of the reduced visibilities that we're going to be contending with. the a look at futurecast and track the fog as we head throughout the rest of tonight, which is showing up with a persistent layer, sticking up around the 10:00, 11:00 time frame. at that point, we'll start to see the fog shrinking. it should dissipate by even where it is most persistent, noon at the latest. that will allow temperatures to warm up. but the presence of the fog where they will hang on longer will have an impact on the high temperatures for tomorrow, specifically east of the oakland hills. towards fairfield and antioch. and the fog will push up against the east side of mount diablo and really reduces how much temperatures will be able to warm up. elsewhere, the low to

mid-60s for inland parts of the north bay. the low 60s around the bay. even the upper 60s along the coast. check out the santa clara valley, getting close to 70 degrees. you will fall short of hitting 70, but a mild day, almost 10 degrees above average for san jose by tomorrow afternoon. as we would look further down the line, we'll see temperatures staying steady while the rain chances will increase into the weekend. the american, and i would like to compare and contrast. they agree that a good chance of rain will move in. there will be snow in the sierra on saturday. but they also roughly agree on sunday, that we won't be complaintly dry. it depends on where the northern edge of the showers will be on sunday. then more differences between these forecast models, the european model will bring in the rain much faster on monday. but some time on monday,
