holiday destinations. well, this is what it looked like about an hour ago as people were trying to get into sfo, bumper to bumper traffic leading into the arrival terminals. an estimated 8 million people are expected to pass through bay area airports before the new year, more than 6 million through sfo alone, but as our amanda hari found out, they seem to be handling it well so far. >> reporter: most of the people i spoke to say they're surprised by just how smooth their travel experience has been this weekend. we look at the departing flights. almost all of them are on time. on the sunday before christmas, baggage claim at sfo was filled with people waiting to complete their travel experience and make their way to their final holiday destinations, but upstairs navine mendoza and her family are waiting for even

despite how easy many people have said it's been so far, you should still arrive early for your flight and check your flight status before leaving home for the airport. meanwhile at the oakland airport it all seemed fairly manageable today, but the holiday travel season is expected to be one of the busiest. more than 500,000 passengers will pass through the airport. the airlines expect the 26th, 27th , and 29th to be the three busiest upcoming travel days. >> yeah. definitely get out early. i would definitely say -- i know they say two hours ahead, maybe a little bit more. tsa can get a little backed up. >> usually i don't fly around the holidays because i know how hectic it gets and i don't have the patience to be stuck in long lines and all that stuff. >> not just people rushing to get to their holiday destinations this week. millions of packages are criss-crossing the country tonight and if you still haven't sent your gifts, what

package deliveries every week. in fact, the berryessa postal office in san jose processed over 30,000 packages over the past two weeks. nahima will be working christmas eve to make sure all her residents get their mail in time. >> i'm the last stop christmas presents go. so i have to make sure i deliver them because i mean like it or not, there's that christmas present and i have to be the one delivering it. >> reporter: she adds it's all about the people, not the job, houses turned into familiar faces and those familiar faces soon turned into friends. >> she's awesome! you take care of her because we want her forever! >> reporter: like mercedes and her family who now call nahima a lifelong friend. >> didn't see my dad for a long time because he was sick. she asked and she was just worried about him because that's what it is. she knows us and she cares about us. >> reporter: it's a special

moment for nahima who was moved by the love from the community she serves. >> happy holidays to you, too. well, it's nice to hear. it's nice to hear that what you do matters to certain people, you know, and the impact that you cause. they know about my son being in the military and my daughter and stuff like that. so they know when i'm not here and they know when i'm here. >> reporter: it's something so much more than just delivering mail. >> sometimes you think that, you know, you're just walking down the street and people don't notice you, but obviously they do. >> reporter: nahima is grateful that she is cared for by the friends she's made along the way in this san jose neighborhood and she cares for them back, one letter at a time. >> the deadline for your packages to get to their destination by christmas through the post office was yesterday, but if you're willing to pay a little bit more, fedex and ups still offer

foggy out there tonight. >> you know, i'm guessing, darren, that's a time lapse, but that is also pacifica with the surf up. high surf warning is in effect now through tuesday through the west coast. breakers could be up to 35 feet and folks need to be very careful if they're headed to the coast. >> i want to start with that. >> yeah. while we're standing on pink and green. >> and specifically you're standing on green for the coast. just hang out here a second. >> okay. >> we've got a high surf
11:15 pm
warning in green along the coast. normally we talk about these and it's a high surf advisory. national weather service doesn't often elevate these to warnings, but they do when we have a map that looks like that. what we're looking at here is the wave energy coming our way. the magenta shows you the higher swell and you can see that thing hitting the coast over the next three days. >> surf's up. >> especially tomorrow and tuesday, you know. my one concern is you've got friends or family here and maybe there's somebody who is not near an ocean who wants to go see the ocean. if you get anywhere near the beach, stay away from the surf over the next two days. this is the kind of situation where people lose their lives because they'll sneak right up on you. the other thing i'm going to do is transition from that because we'll switch from the wave height and go to live radar. we've got some light showers moving across the bay right now. we're looking at it there. we can also look at it when we bring in the last hour of radar on the virtual set. look at the timestamp here, a
11:16 pm
lot prettier this way now, because when we look at it for just the bay, now you can see there's a weak little front, perfectly organized line marching its way across the bay. this is really light stuff. the impressive stuff from tonight, that's what came through around 6:00. keep your eye on that time staff and let's get a slightly wider view out this way. we'll lose the front because i'm switching this. watch the timestamp go back and keep the north bay in view and watch what it looked like at 6:00, 7:00, and 8:00 up here. that was impressive, a fair share of lightning, a few isolated thunderstorms, fairly short lived. so that was fairly mild in comparison to the way things are looking to stack up for tuesday. come back down. i'm going to remove the map and go straight to the forecast imagery where we can time out the high resolution model. say good-bye to radar and say good-bye to tonight's rain and i'm going to let this play through monday first. monday is cloudy, a few light afternoon
11:17 pm
showers in the north bay. that's not it. the system itself is waiting for like midnight going into tuesday. so now here's that time frame. that's a really good looking cold front. let's march that across the bay. deeper shades of red, higher intensity rainfall, really well organized now in a broader line. that is a much more impressive cold front. these are the kinds of systems that give you brief heavy downpours, winds gusting perhaps as much as 40 miles an hour and with this one a few embedded thunderstorms. so in the predawn hours in the north bay you very likely could get awoken by a rumble of thunder, certainly by wind and then this gets down to the golden gate around sunrise on tuesday morning and now we're going to watch that line continue to march its way across the rest of the bay. so the most intense stuff will be in the north bay, but everybody will get in on the act. it shouldn't be as bad in the south bay. by 10:00, 11:00 tuesday morning it's winding down, but just keep
11:18 pm
that tuesday morning time frame forefront in your mind in terms of the ability of some pretty impactful rain, some heavy downpours, and we'll probably pick up in total from that about 1 1/2 inches in the north bay, maybe half an inch of rain in the south bay. that's kind of the main event of this week, but it's not the only one and it gets a little murky after christmas day. of course, the most important thing about that forecast. for christmas day is we're out of the storm business. wednesday has no rain on it. even though tuesday is the most important day here, most of the intensity is done by like noon, 1:00. as we get towards christmas eve, things will have really quieted down. all right. thursday, friday, saturday, sunday, all four of these days now have a chance of rain in them. over the four days it's three separate systems coming our way. i'm not showing you those on futurecast because it will evolve and change as we get closer, but the total rainfall
11:19 pm
spread out here could be as much as 2 or 3 inches in the north bay and maybe an inch in the south bay. that's a lot of rain, but manageable spread out over four days. the takeaway is you got to plan on rain on about every day and we'll do our best to tell you when the dry times are so you can make your holiday plans. right now it stands with the chance of rain on each one of those days. guys, back to you. >> thank you, darren. coming up next, what to expect when the alleged unitedhealthcare ceo shooter goes to court.
