the military investigating it as friendly fire. but first, on the move. millions of americans making a dash to get to their holiday destinations, but could the winter weather create bumps in the road? ♪ good morning. i'm michael george. well, this year's holiday rush is expected to break records. more than 119 million people are expected to travel more than 50 miles from home according to the aaa. that includes 54 millionaire travelers, 2.5 million more people on the roads, and the wild card in all of this? the weather. another storm will be moving across the great lakes and northeast today, bringing rain and snow, and the first of several west coast storms pushes on shore this afternoon. cbs's naomi ruchim is keeping an eye on all of that here in new york. good morning. >> good morning, michael. doesn't it seem like the travel delays hit at the worst time? well, if you haven't left home yet, the good news is after

yesterday the next busiest travel day for flying is not expected until after christmas. still, traveling around the holidays tends to come with plenty of headaches. this year focused on the northeast. the mad dash is underway as millions of americans head home for the holiday. >> the airport has been fine so far today. it doesn't seem too hectic. >> reporter: tsa expects to screen nearly 40 million passengers from december 19th through january 2nd, a 6% increase from a year ago. >> it is a little bit of a hassle to get packed and ready, but there's also a magic about the holidays that makes it exciting to travel. >> reporter: but for some in the northeast over the weekend, snow and frigid temperatures put a damper on travel plans. >> the weather delayed us. we -- our gate changed about 14 times in the span of 15 minutes. >> reporter: cold, wet weather also snarled traffic in the northeast. >> i don't think we were expecting this much.

>> reporter: with 107 million americans expected to hit the nation's highways according to aaa. more snow and freezing rain is expected in parts of the midwest and northeast early this week. storms are also expected to dump rain in the plains and out west, and flurries in areas of higher elevation. meanwhile, yesterday brought major travel headaches for some amtrak passengers. service was temporarily halted between philadelphia and new york due to downed power lines. trains have begun rolling again, though amtrak is warning there may be delays just two days before christmas. >> amtrak says it will waive additional fees for impacted passengers who choose to change their reservations by calling their 1-800 number. for those flying, the tsa says december 27th and the 30th will be the next busiest days with relatively light traffic on christmas and new year's day, michael. a little tip for those who

travel every holiday season, those are the best days because no one wants to fly on those days. >> all right. good tip, naomi ruchim. thanks. now to a horrifying attack on a new york city subway train. a woman believed to be sleeping set on fire and killed in what appears to be a random attack. new york city police say they've taken a person of interest into custody. the "new york post" obtained a photo as it happened. investigators say surveillance video from the subway car shows the man walk up to the victim and set her clothes on fire with what appears to be a lighter early sunday morning. police say the person of interest game to the u.s. from guatemala in 2018 and they're trying to figure out a motive. police have not yet been able to identify the victim. well, a wild scene at a texas mall on one of the busiest shopping days of the year. a driver in a pickup truck trying to avoid police careened through the doors of a jcpenney saturday in the city of killeen north of austin. police say the suspect, john

darrel schultz, ran down people inside the store and kept going. officers exchanged fire with the suspect, killing him. at least five people were hurt. the u.s. navy is investigating how an american f/a-18 was shot down in an apparent friendly fire incident. the jet landed in the red sea. thankfully the pilot and weapons officer ejected safely with one suffering minor injuries. the military says the u.s. was carrying out airstrikes against the houthi rebels when the guided cruiser uss gettysburg mistakenly fired on the fighter jets. on 60 minutes we heard from the mossad agent who led the attack against hezbollah with pagers. 37 were killed and thousands injured. 60 minutes" correspondent lesley stahl spoke with the agent who says the plot started ten years ago with walkie-talkies and

the fa the faa is investigating after drones collided and fell into a crowd during a holiday drone show in orlando, florida. one person was hit -- hurt, but the extent of the injury is still unclear. a second light show scheduled for the same night was cancelled due to what city officials described as, quote, technical difficulties. about 25,000 people came out for the event. officials rushed to rescue more than 170 skiers and snowboarders in colorado after a ski lift stopped working due to a crack detoekted in a section of the machine. it happened saturday afternoon at winter park resort located west of denver. people riding in the gondolas were lowered down by ropes over the course of about five hours. no injuries were reported. well, there's just two days left to shop for christmas. some are completely ready would boxes all wrapped and tied up with bows while others haven't started. why are some people planners and others procrastinators?

the symptoms of season agent affective disorder, or s.a.d., a clinical depression that comes and goes in a seasonal pattern. the most common is winter depression. >> it is a real disorder and people affected most by the changes in life really suffer. >> reporter: the winter blues are also real. it is just a less severe form of seasonal affective disorder. allegheny health psychiatrist dr. alicia kaplan says it can interfere with daily functioning. >> they worry about it a lot in advance knowing they won't function as well, whether it is at work or their home responsibilities. >> reporter: sitting by windows or getting out of the house can brighten your day, but dr. kaplan says people with s.a.d. tend to hibernate which can make symptoms worse. she tells her patients to plan activities ahead of time and make yourself accountable because it can be hard to rely on motivation when you drop into winter depression. >> if someone knows they're not interested in things, not participating in things with family, other social interactions or outings.
