mounds of snow. but first, fall from the sky. the search for answers after a passenger jet trying to make an emergency landing crashes in a ball of fire. ♪ ♪ good morning. i'm michael george. well, there are so many questions about what caused the plane crash, and, incredibly, nearly half of the 67 people on board survived. the plane was flying from azerbaijan to russia when it was diverted and crashed in kazakhstan on the shore of the caspian sea, but why was the plane diverted and what led to the emergency situation on board? cbs's leah mishkin is following the developments for us. leah, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, michael. you asked some great questions that kazakhstan, azerbaijan and russian authorities are investigating. a warning, the video we are about to show is disturbing. a chilling scene, the moment a

passenger jet with 67 people on board crashes near kazakhstan's aktau airport and bursts into flames. emergency crews rushed to the scene. miraculously, 29 people survived, their faces in complete disbelief. 38 others on board were killed. azerbaijan airlines said the jet traveling from the azerbaijan capital to russia was diverted and attempting to make an emergency landing. azerbaijan's president said he was told worsening weather conditions forced the plane off its planned route. russian civil aviation authority says it appears a bird strike led to an emergency on board. families and friends are awaiting an official report. and azerbaijan airline says it will suspend flights on that route until the investigation into the crash is completed. the country's president also declared today a day of morning. michael. >> leah mishkin, thanks so much.

people in hawaii are investigating the discovery of a body in the wheel well of a united airlines plane. the body was found in one of the main landing gears when the plane arrived on maui after taking off from chicago tuesday. united says the wheel well is only accessible from the outside. it is unclear when or how the person was able to get into the landing gear of the boeing 787. the post-christmas travel rush begins today. people at airports and on the roads could face some nasty delays in the south and northwest. a risk of severe storms will begin in texas around midday, stretching from dallas to houston, and it all moves east into louisiana and arkansas tonight. these storms could bring isolated tornados, damaging winds and a threat of large hail. just days after pounding surf caused part of the wharf to collapse in central california, another storm with powerful waves is taking aim at the coast. one winter storm pushing inland will dump heavy snow on the northern rockies. another storm, the third one

this week, will push on shore later today, bringing more rain and mountain snow. and it will bring dangerously strong winds near the pacific coast with 50 to 70-mile-per-hour gusts expected. well, a christmas eve snow meebl trip for two brothers in utah turned into a desperate rescue mission which one was caught in an a avalanche. braeden hansen said he was snowmobiling tuesday when he says an avalanche buried his brother hunter. he activated a beacon and when he got there he saw only his hand poking through the snow. he was able to dig him out with hunter suffering only minor injuries. the family is calling it a christmas miracle. a sanctuary is under quarantine and closed to the public after 20 wildcats died from a bird flu outbreak. they say a variety of cats have died including cougars and bobcats. they believe they may have been infected after eating tainted

food. a pet food company is voluntarily recalling some of its products after the death of an indoor house cat in oregon. authorities say the cat died after eating cat food that tested positive for bird flu. northwest naturals says it is pulling two-pound bags of its feline turkey recipe of frozen raw food sold nationwide. overseas, ukraine president zelenskyy is calling russia's attack calling it inhugh man. authorities say russia fired 200 missiles and drones at energy facilities, killing one person and leaving half a million in the kharkiv region without heat. president biden denounced the attack and vowed to continue the delivery of u.s. weapon to ukraine. from the war zone in ukraine to the vatican, to a michigan soup kitchen and beyond, people around the world are celebrating the season in heartfelt way. christmas day was the first night of hanukkah.

a rare intersection of the two holidays. here is cristian in benavides. >> reporter: pope francis urged all people to find courage during this holy year, to silence the sound of arms and overcome divisions across the world. in washington, d.c., the national menorah was lit near the white house to welcome the first night of hanukkah. u.s. homeland security secretary alejandro my oh us addressed the crowd. >> this hanukkah let us rededicate ourselves to the light that defines us and the better world we seek to build. >> reporter: in kyiv, ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy marked the jewish festival of lights nearly three years into the war with russia. a family in dallas celebrated christmas and hanukkah, enjoying the fact that they coincided on wednesday. >> it kind of represents our family, so it is a special time and i love to do that. >> it is about togetherness.

this is made in china. one of my favorites. >> reporter: jennifer bergman is the owner of west side kids, an independent new york toy store, founded by her mother over 40 years ago. >> people who used to shop here as children are shopping for their children. >> reporter: large retailers like amazon dominate the u.s. toy market. with that size they likely could absorb some of a tariff on china. small businesses like west side kids can't. >> where do most of the products in your store come from? >> china. >> kind of what percentage? >> 90 percent i would say. >> so if there was a tariff, would prices go up for consumer? >> absolutely. >> how quickly? >> probably instantly. >> reporter: bergman admitted she would have to pass the cost of the import taxes on to shoppers. >> i love this store. >> if prices were to go up, would that force you to shop somewhere else? >> yeah, it would be hard. >> reporter: as most customers turn to cheaper online outlets, small toy stores are a vanishing business along with the in-store experience. >> we're a toy store. it is a magical place to bring a child.

today after a christmas eve santa rally. the dow gained 390 points, the nasdaq jumped 266 points, and the s&p 500 closed up 65 points. the day after christmas, known for those post-holiday sales and it is also the day of many unhappy returns. if you plan on sending back some of those unwanted gifts, you should know more retailers are charging return fees since the explosion of online shopping stemming from the pandemic. avoiding a fee can usually be as simple as taking it back to a physical store. by the time 2024 wraps up, consumers will have returned nearly $900 billion in goods according to the national retail federation. some systane eye drops are being recalled for possible fungal contamination according to the federal drug administration. one lot of systane lubricant eye drops ultra pf was recalled after a customer complaint of foreign material observed in the

and here is a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. all right. this is my favorite story of the day. it was a christmas miracle for a family in jacksonville, florida who got the best surprise on their doorbell camera. that's their 4-year-old german shepherd, athena, who had been missing for nine days. she found her way home and started ringing the doorbell around 2:30 in the morning on christmas eve. now, mom says she tried to let the dog in without waking up her four kids, but, of course, that didn't happen. everyone woke up to celebrate. welcome home, athena. well, the art of playing santa claus goes much deeper than donning a red suit. we found a jolly but serious saint nick to puts future santas

to the test with a rigorous training program. here is cbs's skyler henry. >> reporter: if the saying seeing is believing means anything at christmas, rick rosenthal is a true believer. >> what makes a good santa? >> the very first thing is your heart. you have to like yourself. >> you have to be understood and logical to be believable. >> reporter: twice a year rosenthal, or santa rick as he likes to be called, is dean of students at the northern lights santa academy in atlanta. between 100 and 150 student santas and mrs. clauses from as far aways as germany and england enroll each session. they're not your typical mall santas. >> i'm working on becoming a professional christmas entertaining. but not just "a", and kpreert christmas entertainer. >> reporter: in the near decades since rosenthal founded it, northern lights has grown to the
