sunday night, but it's not nearly as bad. still an advisory. and we also need to talk about the rain, which is coming down. take a look at the north bay. this is the last hour of radar, very light. this is the beginning. let me show you how it will intensify over the course of tonight. and see the time down here? so the showers are just about to start to pick up. off again, on again showers through the entire morning. on saturday, i'll let that go until 2:00 in the afternoon. now we'll play this forward. none of this is big. it is like on again, off again fairly light rain with some perspective on this. how much rain might we get? when this is done, 1:00 in the afternoon tomorrow. maybe a couple hundredths in the south bay. .2 inches in north bay. this is rainmaker number one. a quick preview of what's coming our way after this because the system that comes in on sunday is going to be a little wetter.

have better dynamics with it, and a little more rain out of that one. we're going to play this forward, and you can watch how the rain will get impressive as that next system right there. that's the one that comes in on sunday. that's the one we'll get to by sunday afternoon. that's when we'll slow down and come for a closer look. we'll time out sunday's rain coming up in a few minutes. for now, back to you. >> thank you. workers were in and out of the mouth of the san leandro river, picking up debris from the worst bathroom as it washed ashore. the collapse happened in the same area, where they had been replacing pilings to stabilize the wharf. now with the threat of climate change, i don't know if they're going to rebuild. >> i don't think we could speak with any confidence whether rebuilding that section of the wharf is feasible or the appropriate thing to do. in light of the increased

frequency and power of these storm events we're experiencing. >> about 20 businesses have been impacted by the ongoing closure around the wharf. there is no timeline. other news tonight, people across oakland have had enough of the sideshows is and the smash and grabs and the car break-ins. police say they're the ones handcuffed when it comes to chasing the bad guys. police pursuits in oakland are strictly prohibited. governor newsom says that rule should change, if the city wants to help fight crime. >> reporter: oakland business owners are fed up with the lawlessness. on saturday morning, a group of thieves drove a stolen car into mr. crispy to steal an atm. >> it was like unbelievable. it seemed like some type of movie

scene. >> reporter: donald smith, a.k.a. mr. crispy, says it will likely cost him $30,000 to repair the damage. >> i feel disrespects, all that several hundred dollars in it. mr. crispy isn't surprise, saying oakland makes it inviting for the criminals with a no chase policy. officers can chase if they believe a suspect committed a violent crime. >> you could be drunk, you can run a red light. you can come close to sideswiping a school bus right in front of a police officer, and the pursuit policy in oakland says we cannot pursue that suspect. >> reporter: at a friday press conference, the governor demanded challenges to the pursuit policy. all to help the understaffed oakland police department since february. he'll extend the help for

another month. but the extra chp resources will end in january, if the policy isn't changed. >> this is not something that's particularly complicated. it's just a question of commitment. >> reporter: the chp officers working in oakland don't have to follow the policy. they caught this chase on thursday. chp officers chased a stolen car. it ended in a crash in the fruitvale district. nobody was seriously hurt in this case, but they worry high-speed pursuits will kill the innocent people. >> and having them tell us they didn't think we were allowed to chase them. that type of situation only benefits the criminals. >> reporter: chp says their partnership have led to a 34% decrease in crime year over year. since february, chp says they have confiscated 139 guns. the state installed license plate readers in oakland.

>> so far this year, we, as an agency, have been involved in over 500 pursuits in the city of oakland. but within that, we've arrested 155 felons. >> reporter: mr. crispy supports the governor's demand, saying it is time to let the police do their job. >> if that policy changes, it will make a difference. >> interim mayor nikki fortunato bas thinks the extension is a good idea. with a sustained presence by chp, and in addressing violent crime through an intelligence based cease-fire strategy. she did not come out. crime rates in oakland dropped by 34%. it's a five-year low. the city is on track to have fewer than a hundred homicides this year. chp will expand that surge violation in vallejo, where the city has severe staffing

ever honestly seen anything like this or having somebody call in and saying i'm trapped. >> reporter: when kerwin arrived, she couldn't believe it. >> i don't hear anybody in the vehicle. >> reporter: all of a sudden, the person in the car is calling in that they're on fire and they can't get out. >> are you still in the car? hey, are you still in the car? >> reporter: watching the body cam, it felt slower than it felt at the time. >> there is somebody in there. >> it was so intensely, so we could not get close. >> reporter: with the help of portland fire and rescue, she was able to get out. >> and i just moved up. we worked on extrication and i realized she wasn't breathing. >> reporter: fire crews showing up in the nick of time. >> lips, lips.

course, got a little bit of an assist with a reef that sits right off the coast here at mavericks near pillar point, which really gave those. the wharf, once again, the entire strip of the coastline there. this is the high surf advisory that stays in effect until sunday afternoon. we won't get 60-foot waves, but it will be 40 at this time. you might hear that and say oh, that's not bad. for any average prebecause waves are still high nor to get currents that could a, easily knock them out. it has happened with advisories. much stronger wording. this is an advisory and the risk is just the same for the rest of us in terms of being mindful. there's the map that shows us the wave heights.

but i mean how do we keep getting this? we've had several series of these elevated swells coming our way. they're coming from storms out here in the pacific. this is what drives them. when you look at the regular satellite, you don't see anything there. but you still don't see the storm responsible for that huge dome of elevated waves. but if you look at water vapors, you'll see it now. you see that circulation right now. watch how tightly wound that thing got as they moved across the pacific. do you see it? now if we color code it, that's high ins. and that is going into washington state. but some of the wave energy is coming this way, which is why we've got that surf advisory. if you watch the forecast on this, the color codes on here, we're not getting the reds, we're getting the yellows and oranges, and that's our 15 to 20-foot swells. be really careful at the beach. keep in

mind that stretch of coastline on there. all right, let's look ahead to the sunday rainmaker because i kind of left that right off at the end of the last visit. i want to show you the difference. we know we're getting a little bit of light rain tonight. we look at live doppler. we know we'll get some rain overnight. i showed you that in the last visit. now we're going ahead to tomorrow night, which is so late. tomorrow night, it's sunday morning. 12:15, here comes the rain again. we'll see the showers develop again. watch the cold front set up right off the coast there. and that will get us into the 3:00 hour. the five o'clock right, this is sunrise on sunday. this is not too intense. it is not. it's widespread rain. it's the first half of sunday, on again, off again showers. there will be breaks, moments it lets up, then turns back on again. watch the last straggler here.
