both in and out of the office are honoring his decades of service tonight. >> he was a southern gentleman. he was proper. he was kind. he was tough in some ways. plus the risks associated with repairing the santa cruz wharf and what comes next if it isn't fixed. >> good evening. i'm brian hackney. >> i'm andrea nakano. the country and the world are paying homage tonight to the 39th president of the united states, jimmy carter. he passed away today in his homestate of georgia at the age of 100. >> buffeted by the iran hostage crisis and racked by 18% interest rates during his tenure, he served only a single term as president from 1977 to 1981, but a great deal of his legacy involves what happened after he left the white house. >> we may never see his likes again. we'd all do well to try to be more like jimmy carter. i

think that what jimmy carter is an example of is just simple decency, simple decency, and i think that's what the rest of the world looks to america for. >> president-elect donald trump released a statement on mr. carter's passing today as well saying of carter's time in office, "he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all americans and for that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude." as we mentioned, carter redefined the role of a former president over the last four decades through his work defending human rights and caring for others. >> he maintained a strong commitment to faith and family and his southern roots. norah o'donnell looks back at the life and times of the man from plains. >> promised you four years ago that i would never lie to you. i will faithfully execute the office of president of the united states. >> reporter: jimmy carter

entered the white house in 1977. >> when i get to washington, coming in as an outsider. >> reporter: after campaigning as an establishment alternative. born in plains, georgia, in 1924, james earl carter jr. was the son of a businessman, farmer, and registered nurse. he studied nuclear science at the u.s. naval academy and while there fell in love with rosalynn smith, also from plains. they married in 1946 and raised four children. jimmy and rosalynn were partners in the family business which moved from peanuts to politics. mr. carter served two terms in the georgia state senate and in 1970 he was elected governor. >> my name is jimmy carter and i'm running for president. >> reporter: he was hardly a household name, but he won the democratic presidential nomination and challenged incumbent republican gerald ford. >> i'm going to vote for you.

>> thank you very much. i depend on that. >> reporter: with the nation reeling from vietnam and watergate, mr. carter's simple message struck a chord. >> i would not tell a lie. i would not mislead the american people. >> reporter: in 1976, america's bicentennial year, he beat mr. ford to become the nation's 39th president. >> tradition shattering walk down pennsylvania avenue. >> reporter: but the next four years were rocky. as oil prices and inflation soared, his popularity sank, yet president carter did achieve many of his goals. he created the departments of energy and education, established formal diplomatic ties with china, and returned control of the panama canal to panama. perhaps his greatest achievement was a historic peace treaty between israel and egypt known as the camp david accords. >> that deep and ancient

antagonism can be settled without bloodshed. >> reporter: at the same time he became the first u.s. president to confront the threat of militant islam. on november 4th, 1979, iranian militants stormed the u.s. embassy in tehran, taking 52 american hostages. a u.s. military attempt to free the hostages in april of 1980 ended in disaster. eight american servicemen were killed. the very next november with americans still held hostage overseas and inflation soaring at home, jimmy carter lost his reelection bid in a landslide to ronald reagan. mr. carter spent his final days in the white house negotiating the release of the hostages. iran would not let them go until a few minutes after he left office. ♪ >> reporter: jimmy carter went

on to have great success in his post presidency. he established the carter center in atlanta, working for peace around the board, and here at homebuilding houses for the needy through habitat for humanity. >> i have this freedom to do things that i like to do and that an official of the u.s. government or united nations cannot do. >> reporter: he was awarded the nobel peace prize in 2002 and remained one of the most active former presidents in history. in 2018 mr. carter announced he had cancer that had spread to his liver and brain. faith was a constant guiding force in the president's life and during this time he continued to teach his weekly sunday school lesson. >> i see you wide awake. >> reporter: later that same year he announced he was cancer-free and talked about it with us in 2018. >> i was prepared to go, but things turned out for the better. >> reporter: but that's an unusual thing, to prepare to say good-bye and be granted a

great deal more time. >> that's true. well, i've been very fortunate in many ways. >> reporter: in october surrounded by family and friends, mr. carter had his 100th birthday party in the backyard of his home in plains, georgia. absent from celebration was his beloved wife rosalynn who passed away at the age of 96 almost a year earlier. the pair were the longest married first couple in american history. mr. carter reflected on their life together in the cbs morning series "note to self." >> one of your greatest sources of happiness will be your wife rosalynn and a growing family that will be coming. stay close to all of them. bring them together whenever possible and provide them the same help and support that your own parents gave to you. >> president biden has scheduled carter's state funeral for january 9th in washington, d.c. reaction to jimmy carter's death has been pouring in on

social media all day. this is just a fraction of people sharing personal stories about how he impacted their lives and the example he set. world leaders are remembering the former president, such as the european parliament president, french president emmanuel macron, and canadian prime minister justin trudeau. several bay area lawmakers are also sharing their thoughts on the former president, including former speaker nancy pelosi. she wrote, "as president, his work to restore integrity to the political arena during a difficult chapter in our history was a testament to his firm faith in the sanctity of the public good which he always placed above his own. after leaving the white house he carried on his service leading perhaps the most impactful post presidency in history." >> mr. carter's work on health and the environment brought him in contact with a lot of folks here in california, forging friendships that spanned decades. kara st. cyr has that

story. >> here's one. that was down in los angeles i think. >> reporter: while the country celebrates the life of 39th president jimmy carter, robert cogland can mourning a friend. >> i had the good fortune of getting to know him when he was still governor, when he was governor carter, in 1974. that's 50 years ago. >> reporter: the two would meet when cogland was working to prevent the army corps of engineers from building a dam over the stanislaus river. carter would later join the effort calling it one of the most beautiful rivers on earth. cogland would follow him to the white house as special assistant to administrator to the epa. he watched carter establish the camp david accords that would forever change the middle east and watched as he tirelessly worked to pass environmental reforms still active in today's politics. >> he was a southern gentleman.

he was proper. he was kind. he was tough in some ways. he knew what he wanted and he didn't want you to waste his time. >> reporter: but of all carter's achievements cogland said his personality and genuine disposition or what those who knew him best will remember most. >> look at that smile he's giving me. >> reporter: meanwhile in downtown san francisco, former mayor willie brown says carter's contributions to the country and california are undeniable. >> we have not had a president who had as much to do with addressing peace in the middle east. he stepped up. >> reporter: brown said carter lived life by a strong set of values and for that he will always be remembered. >> as walter cronkite said, he was probably the smartest person ever to be president of these united states. >> mr. carter helped change the life of families here in the

bay area long after he left the oval office. our cameras were there when he came to oakland with his wife rosalynn in 2013. the carters partnered with habitat for humanity to finish building townhomes for low income families. they physically helped build the homes. we spoke to one resident who says she treasures the special moments they shared together. >> the president worked in this room and he put this part of the window. i hold this part and he pulled it out with the screw right here. >> these are going to be wonderful apartments at a fairly modest cost at least for this area. >> i say wow! my god, i can't believe the president was in my house! >> president carter handed this key to adelfa. she hangs it near the front door to show how much she appreciates him and habitat for humanity. >> we also spoke to habitat for

humanity in san francisco. they shared some of the staff's favorite memories of president carter. >> you know, one of the favorite stories i loved about him was he was on a carter bill with habitat for humanity international and he wanted to go up on a roof and work on the roof. the secret service agents were like president carter, you can't do that. he was like oh, no, yes, i can. rosalynn looked over and said, "james, no" and he was like, "okay. i'm out. i won't do it." >> you can see all our coverage of the life of president jimmy carter on our website kpix.com and on the cbs news app. there is other news tonight, including the story of the long time santa cruz resident who had warned the town for years that their famous wharf was in bad shape before part of it washed out to sea a week ago. then a beloved san francisco metal band has been making a splash in the bay area

for decades. we're talking with the band's frontwoman and co-founder. coming up in the first alert forecast, the first thing we'll look at, the frost advisory and the freeze warning over the next few mornings. it's going to get cold and by the end of the week we'll shift our attention. we have our next chance of rain by friday. we'll see how likely that is. i'll show you where things stand on it in the forecast coming up. ♪

uncertainty remains around the future of santa cruz wharf. >> one supervisor says the disaster was years in the making. his name is jon bombaci. he said they had a plan in 2013 to prevent the pier from collapsing which included widening the pier and adding a pedestrian walkway on each side and reinforcing it both ways. it could have prevented monday's collapse he says. now he feels his report just fell on deaf ears. >> i had been telling the city leadership for years that this was going to happen just like that. >> the debris from the collapse is mostly picked up. as for what happens next, the city is looking at options but is not optimistic that it will be

rebuilt. darren peck is here with us now. you mentioned it's going to get cold earlier, but i think a lot of people want to know are they going to be able to see the fireworks on tuesday? >> yeah. that shouldn't be a problem. tuesday looks like a pretty quiet day in between systems. you'll want to bundle up, though. >> really cold. >> i think the bigger issue will be, yeah, anybody out new year's eve, it's going to be particularly cold. we'll start there. we've got a lot going on on the virtual set. the map is all lit up in terms of where the watch is and where the advisories are. the light blue is a frost advisory tomorrow into wednesday. the bright blue up here is where we have a freeze warning. so from the sound of it, it's going to be colder in the north bay. these are morning lows on tuesday morning, which is going to be the coldest morning of the week, but monday and tuesday are close. tomorrow your numbers are not that far off. you'll probably be about 3 to 4 degrees warmer than that and

you've got a frost advisory tomorrow and it turns into a freeze warning in the morning. let's look at the rest of the bay. go ahead and sweep that down and get down to the south bay so that we get everybody in. numbers will be in the low 40s for about everybody else and these are tuesday morning lows. this is the coldest you'll get for your part of the bay. san francisco in the low 40s and a cold morning pretty much anywhere. wednesday morning, new year's day, it does get a little better and then it will be much better by thursday and friday as we'll start to see temperatures begin to increase. that covers the cold in the morning. let's look at this possibility for rain. another system is coming our way which gets here by the end of the week, doesn't look super impressive. keep your eye on the timestamp down there. we're looking at thursday into friday morning. you see a really good looking cold front coming across and if we watch it progress onshore, it kind of

just grazes us from that vantage point. we're watching the american model, which is one of the forecast models we would look at to go out to day five, which is what we're looking at there. let's look at it another way from one other model. we'll do the comparison and instead of taking a look at the american model, let's go to the european model, which is a little more bullish on the notion we are going to get rain. so we'll take that from the timestamp here. this is late thursday night. there's your band of rain sitting off the coat. that progresses onshore as we get into friday into the morning and afternoon. now you're looking at 4:00. this is in the afternoon friday and we're getting a little bit more rain from that cold front than the american model said we would. this model tends to do a little better with these pacific storms when we're looking at this time frame on day five. so at this point we've got rain in the forecast for friday and we'll keep an eye on it, how this plays out, in terms of totals. this is one early takeaway, maybe a half

authorities in south korea are still trying to piece together exactly what happened to a commercial airline that crashed on the runway yesterday, killing all but two of the 181 passengers and crew on board. the crash happened in muan county, a rural area of the country's southwest tip. investigators are currently looking into why the landing

gear failed to deploy. fire officials said today in a briefing that the control tower issued a warning about birds in the area to the pilot shortly before it was supposed to land. inside the airport families gathered as a fire official read the names of the victims. all south koreans except for two thai citizens. >> reporter: it was their first foreign trip he said, a treat with their father. it's hard to determine the cause of the accident, the ceo said. we will have to wait for the official investigation. >> this is south korea's deadliest crash in decades. authorities declared the crash site a disaster zone and launched an investigation. coming up next, we're talking with the frontwoman for a long time san francisco metal band that has been making a splash in

of packed house, not by performing metal, but by lifting it. joseph is a top instructor of a cardio warningout known as bodypump. her regular classes are at the presidio community ymca as well as the ucsf fitness center at mission bay. >> i've gotten to know the members who are like family now. i'd be really bummed if i had to stop doing this. i just feel this connection to everybody. >> she was outstanding. i loved her energy, her enthusiasm and they really just got everyone into it. >> it's almost impossible to get into one of her classes. >> you need to be good in front of the crowd and she's great in front of the crowd. >> i'm hooked. she is amazing. >> talk about a renaissance woman, she does it all. she's so great at this. i've never seen her play, but people i've heard who have seen her said she's fantastic. >> one thing different for the stoner boom musician, at bodypump, she'll crack a smile. >> i'm in a doom band and we're never going to be doing -- we don't smile, don't smile
