host one of the biggest new year's eve bashes in the world. the long goodbye. the nation prepares to say a final farewell to jimmy carter. the week of ceremonies and tributes planned for the 39th president. and a warning to players -- the fbi sounding the alarm following a string of burglaries at the homes of professional athletes. good morning. i'm michael george. well, we are just hours away from ushering in the new year, and one of the biggest celebrations is, of course, the ball drop. taking place a few blocks from here in new york city. more than a million revelers are expected to pack the crossroads of the world, and the nypd says they are ready to keep everyone safe. cbs' jarred hill joins us from times square with the preparations for the big night. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, michael. yeah, a million people expected to be here in times square tonight for the big ball drop in new york city. we know the ball is ready to go, the confetti has been tested. i checked both of them, it's still there. now the big focus is going to be security.

starting at 3:00 this afternoon, the only way into the perimeter is going to be through security checkpoints where there will be officers screening any and all spectators, nobody can get out after they've come in. the nypd says they'll have teams fanned out across the city. some in boats, k-9s checking for explosives, officers checking for pickpockets, all to make sure that tonight is fun and safe. they're also increasing the number of drones in the sky to keep watch from above. another thing here, nypd says they've calibrated tonight's security preps with events happening overseas. namely the deadly christmas market attack in germany. we're going to say sanitation trucks, sand trucks, on the roads to stop anyone from using a vehicle to ram into the crowd. the nypd tells us that there isn't any specific, credible threat this year to the celebration in times square, but they've been on heightened alert since the attacks on october 7th in israel. back to you. >> all right. jarred hill in times square.

thanks. let's talk weather now as we ring in the new year. a few showers for party revelers in times square, and clear skies from the carolinas to florida. temperatures will be below freezing in the upper midwest, but warmer, 50s near the gulf coast. it will be in the 20s and 30s in the rocky mountain states with clouds approaching from the west. another place with rain is the pacific northwest. it will be clear and 50s in l.a. for the start of 2025, colder temperatures are moving into the midwest and northeast. temperatures fall to the middle 20s this week in milwaukee, and after hitting 60 degrees at kennedy airport monday, new york city cools to the 40s thursday. then about a week from now, a bitter blast of arctic air will likely dive into the entire eastern u.s. ring in the new year with us with a star-studded special, "new year's eve live: nashville's big bash." it all gets under way tonight at 8:00, 7:00 central here on cbs or streaming on paramount plus. the new year's holiday is forcing organizers to push back

the start of memorial services for former president jimmy carter. it will now begin saturday with a motorcade carrying his remains through his hometown of plains, georgia, stopping at his boyhood home. the former president will lie in repose at the carter presidential center in atlanta. one week from today, the services move to washington, d.c., where carter will lie in state in the u.s. capitol. then a week from thursday, funeral services will be held at the washington national cathedral. carter will then be flown back to georgia and laid to rest on his family's property. cbs' nicole valdes joins us from atlanta with more on how people are paying tribute. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. outside here the carter center, we've met several people who have left flowers and cards, and each one of those really stands as proof of the impact former president jimmy carter made on the nation. i will tell you here, there are some who simply remember him as a man of the people.

and georgians now wanting to pay tribute to the former president in their own way. a steady stream of visitors have descended on former president jimmy carter's home state of georgia in the hours since his death. in plains, they flocked to his boyhood sign. -- boyhood home. >> i saw the sign for the historical site on the road. i was like, my gosh, we have to go. >> reporter: and to maranatha baptist church where carter taught sunday school for years. >> the life that jimmy carter lived was that of a human saint. >> reporter: at the carter center in atlanta, tributes of flowers and messages are growing. while at nearby manuel's tavern patrons also gathered to remember the former president who was a regular. >> even though we all knew it was coming, it was still a surprise you know, that he's gone. >> reporter: decatur resident cathy keeler stopped by after lighting a candle for carter. did you just kind of want to be here and sort of be among that

history, that memory? >> i did. my whole life he's been a big part as a leader in our country. >> reporter: memorial services are set to begin this weekend here in georgia. a motorcade will carry the former president through his hometown of plains, bringing him to the carter center to lie in repose. he'll lie in state at the u.s. capitol on january 7th until his state funeral two days later in washington. >> going to be missed by many, not just by georgians, but by those around the world. >> reporter: georgia's only president will return home for a private burial. and president biden saying on x yesterday, "we would all do a little better to be a bit more like jimmy carter." now for anyone hoping to say goodbye to the former president, there are several public viewings. one will happen in atlanta. a second over in washington, d.c. the public is also invited to stand along the motorcade routes

as he makes his way from his home state of georgia to washington, d.c., and back before he's laid to rest. >> nicole valdes in atlanta, thanks. the ntsb is sending investigators to south korea to help in the investigation of a devastating plane crash that killed 179 people. the team of investigators from the u.s. also includes the faa and boeing. they'll help determine what went wrong with the jeju airplane which skidded down an airport runway and crashed into a barrier on sunday. the meantime, south korea says it's making efforts to expedite the process of identifying dead bodies from the crash. only two people survived. the u.s. treasury says it was hacked by china in what it calls a major breach. officials on monday said a chinese state-sponsored hacker broke into the u.s. system, accessing employee work stations and some unclassified documents. it's unclear how many work stations were targeted or what sort of documents the hackers obtained.

>> a heart-pounding video captures the moment a delta flight nearly slammed into a plane carrying the gonzaga university basketball team. the incident unfolded last friday afternoon at los angeles international airport. watch as the rolling jet comes to a sudden stop just as the delta flight comes barreling up the runway at full speed and lifts off. luckily no one was hurt. oh my [ bleep ] -- >> dash cam video caught a dramatic partial building collapse in new orleans. this happened last night in the lower garden district. you can see at least one car narrowly missed getting crushed. the building appeared to be vacant, and no one was hurt. it's the second building to collapse in new orleans in the past month. the fbi is warning sports leagues about organized crime organizations targeting professional athletes. it comes after dallas mavericks
