out of sfo recently or even if you've driven by, you might have seen some billboards that caught your attention. the pictures on them show people, some very young, as young as a year old, who have died in the fentanyl crisis. advocates say campaigns like these are part of the reason why overdose deaths dropped by 17% nationwide from july 2023 to july 2024. in san francisco overdose deaths are down nearly 20% from the most recent data released in november. one of the families behind this campaign of billboards has been on the front lines of the fight against fentanyl for half a decade. our katie nielsen looks at what's motivating them and other bay area families to make sure no one else suffers the same fate. >> i knew it would be hard to see him up there. he shouldn't be there. >> reporter: lisa marquez is talking about her son fernando who died in 2020 at 17 years old from an accidental fentanyl overdose. >> there's so many young

underground there. the ground's pretty fractured and every so often that stuff will shake a bit and one of those little fractures will put off a quake. a 4.7 for that part of northern california, kind of commonplace, no reports of any damage, but if you felt something at 6:34, that's what it was. if you want to see how widely felt it was, look at the colors on here. definitely the north bay felt this, but there was places in the city where there were reports. it's on the low end of the scale, but you aren't crazy if you thought you felt something today at about 6:34. this is not one of those earthquakes that's on our much more concerning series of faults, not the san andreas. it wasn't the hayward. it wasn't the calaveras. if you look through the north bay, there's the rodgers creek fault, wasn't even on that, just a little insight what happened up there today. let's come back to the virtual map, want to pick that up story with friday because that's the next element to discuss in terms of a chance of

rain come our way. i want to slow it down. keep your eye down here. i'm going to start this on friday morning at 5:00 a.m. and you'll see a pretty well put together cold front through the 6:00, 7:00, and 8:00 hours kind of hanging out there in the north bay. by the time we get to about noon, that cold front has finally got down to the golden gate. the timestamp on here has this right about noon. at this point it's really just been the north bay's rain, but from noon on that rain will continue to march its way southward and everybody will get in on the act and we'll see rain that will work its way southward from there and we'll see those showers hold together as they get down to the south bay and you'll get some light rain there as well, promise you that that's the way that cold front's going to progress even if it just wants to keep replaying monday's light rain. what will the totals look like? maybe 0.2-inch down the peninsula. you might get a 0.1-inch in san jose. numbers are better up in the north bay,
11:21 pm
just about perhaps closer to 0.4 inch of rain falling for that part of the bay. that's the rain story. that gets here friday. the other thing to be aware of considering how cold it's been around here the last few mornings, it's about to get a little better. we don't have any frost advisories for tomorrow morning, still going to be cold, a lot of mid-40s, but it's an improvement. let's keep the view here and swing our vantage point back so we can look down the coastline because by the time we get to saturday, there's one other item to discuss on here and that's the fact we've got another swell coming our way. it's not going to be as big as the one that came through here when we had a part of the wharf break off down in santa cruz and it's not going to be the kind of swell that kicks off 100-foot waves like they were seeing at mavericks on monday, but look what is coming our way. you can see the storm track in the pacific looks pretty good. if you keep your

eye on this little circulation and let's fill that in, bull's eye. that's where the next swell's coming from. it will get here friday night into saturday. it's early on this, but it's likely the national weather service is going to put out a high surf advisory. there's your early heads up on that. if you've got any plans to be along the coast, any of the beaches, saturday would be the day. don't turn your back on the surf because it's still big enough it could cause problems and be dangerous, chance of rain friday and nothing else coming our way for the rest of the seven-day forecast after that. vern, over to you. >> i'll take it from here. straight ahead in sports, you like high scoring? we found a game and four quarters of football, not enough. and no brock purdy this weekend? no problem. this 49er gets to go against his former team in the desert.
