illegal fireworks display going wrong in hawaii. you may or may not be a fan of this world record holder. it's friday, no doubt bars and restaurants across the country have plenty of customers tonight. they say beverages containing alcohol should carry a health warning label about cancer risks. murphy released that advisory today saying it is the third leading cause of cancer in the united states, trailing behind tobacco and obesity, and it doesn't matter what kind of alcohol you're drinking. those drinks have warnings about birth defects if used by

pregnant women. they would include cancer risks as well. >> alcohol is really good at breaking down protein. and over time, it causes damage to cells, inflammation. >> they typically cover public health issues, needing urgent awareness, issuing other advisories from mental health and teens. now the warning comes as non-alcoholic beverage industry is booming for non-alcoholic drinks and especially strong over the last two years. it's likely to continue growing with more people taking part in dry january and taking a break. andrea nakano joins with us more. >> it is interesting as they would take part in dry january as a way to reset their bodies. but one is helping san francisco extend their street

say the surgeon general's warning should serve as a wakeup call to make sure alcohol use isn't getting out of control. >> that is when it will be problematic. when you see, you know, they might not count, but there might be a few bottles of wine and that recycling they need to pay attention to. >> reporter: they show drinking among young adults is on the decline by as much as 10%. they believe the perception of alcohol is changing, just like they did decades ago with cigarettes. >> we're going up against the industries as the same old thing that we did years ago. we're not going to outlaw it. i think there rsv certain prices for it. i don't think suggesting a healthy thing to do is the way to go. i think perceptions do change. >> reporter: and they are helping businesses like the ocean beach cafe that alcohol

isn't needed to enjoy a night out of town. >> i love it. i love it. it's awesome. >> this is an unprecedented shift in drinking culture. and since it is the default for when we get together and for how we socialize, it is expected. it is the default, and that is what has shifted. >> and one misconception, there may be some benefits to light drinking such as wine for your heart health, but they say that is not the case. >> it is probably a good thing to be aware of how much you're drinking and the potential risk. >> exactly. sometimes you would go through a bottle of wine, open another, then the next thing you know, well, not in one day. and there are several bottles in that recycling bin. just to keep an eye on. >> and it will be that risk

that is associated with it. a lot of things to consider. and federal officials now say the person behind the attack also set fire to a short-term rental home. shamsud-din jabbar was allegedly trying to conceal evidence, ranging from the bomb making materials to the rifle silencer. investigators also found a rare organic compound not previously used in the united states. the house fire burned themselves out before they could spread. the city is set to host the super bowl in the coming weeks. and new orleans is ramping up the security as you might expect. launching an investigation today into what went wrong leading up to the attack that left 14 people dead. focus now is on bourbon street. those are specifically designed to stop vehicles from plowing through. where they were down on the morning of attacks for repairs. now meanwhile memorials are growing. a funeral was held for

one of those victims, while others are being rememberedded by friends. lee walden reports from new orleans. >> everybody, everybody loved her. she was just so bubbly and so centric. >> reporter: those words used to describe one of the 14 people killed in the new orleans terror attack early on new year's day. we spoke to a friend who was with her that night, but was not hit when the driver, shamsud-din jabbar, plowed through a crowd on bourbon street. >> i barely slept. i've barely eaten. being here is quite up settling, but i need to get her story out. people need to know what type of story she was. >> reporter: president joe biden spoke to the victims families. he is set to visit the city with first lady, jill bide p b, as tributes pour in. >> he's offering the full support of our federal government to push back against

terrorism. to ensure the people of new orleans, as well as those who visit, that we're safe. >> reporter: in addition to the 14 victims, dozens more were hurt in the attack including two police officers hospitalizedded after a shootout with the attacker. >> and our hearts and prayers go out to the victims who lost their lives to the remaining citizens that are in the hospital, still recovering. and a huge thank you to those who put their lives on the line of duty. >> ahead to new orleans, the white house press secretary expressed sympathy to the families, adding they are keeping a close eye on security around the city. so they will consistently evaluate threats and share the latest

information to disrupt any potential copy cats or potential threats. >> and the cybertruck explosion in las vegas, just hours after the new orleans incident. investigators have officially ruled out any connection between the two attacks. authorities in vegas say the green beret who died in the explosion left a couple of notes behind. 37-year-old matthew livelsberger said it should serve as a wake-up call for the country's ills. he also wrote a note saying he needed to cleanse his mind of the lives lost of people he knew, the burden of the lives he had taken. explosion happened outside the trump hotel in las vegas, but authorities don't believe the president elect was actually the target of his anger. >> we are the united states of america, the best country, the people to ever exist. right now, we're terminally ill and headed towards collapse. this is not a terror attack, but a wake up call. americans only pay attention to spectacle and

violence. what better way to get my point across with fireworks and explosives. >> livelsberger died from a gunshot wound to the head before the explosion. investigators say he acted alone. here in the bay area, the antioch police department agreed to a new oversight deal in the wake of the racist text message scandal. launching an investigation after the release of dozens of discriminatory attacks, allegedly exchanged by antioch police between 2019 and 2022. nearly half of the police force was put on leave as a result of that. as part of the agreement, they have to hire an expert law enforcement official to look over their policies including the use of force, hiring, discipline. the antioch police department wrote in part we acknowledge the trust is earned, not given. this will mark a meaningful step forward. we also remain fully cooperative with the california department of justice, which is

conducting an independent investigation. san mateo county's embattled sheriff is firing back at the county she works for as she faces accusation of misconduct and widespread calls for her resignation. today, lawyers for sheriff christina corpus filed a $10 million legal claim, launching her own accusations against the county. the fight exploded back in the public view in november with the release of an independent report accusing corpus of workplace misconduct, including an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. well now the claim, her attorneys filed, alleges that report was bias and a part of an evil scheme to force her out of office. it also alleges that corpus has been targeted because she's the county's first latina sheriff. the claim reads in part, "this is a case of a county discriminating against, harassing, defaming dedicated public servant because the defendants do not want either a woman or a latinx person as the

head of the sheriff's department." we did reach out to the county for their response to the claim. we'll let you know what we hear back from them. the county will hold a special election in march to decide if county supervisors should have the power to fire the sheriff. in oakland, the fire department is now laying out an alarming reality about the impact to public safety when two fire stations closed starting monday. the chief says the temporary closures will slow down response times. the incidents of the fire that burned nearly $15 back in october. and a homeowner might have lost everything if those stations were closed at the time. >> reporter: oakland firefighters kicking down a burning fence to get to the flames behind it. that is nenita tadeo's fence. she thought it was over, when the october 18 keller fire surrounded her home. she credits the firefighters at station 28 and nearby stations

for saving her neighborhood. >> i'm not going to call it lucky, but we are blessed. blessed because we have, again, because of the firefighters that saved our house. >> reporter: the keller fire severely damaged her neighbor's house. she only lost her fence. but once station 28 closes on monday, she worries response times will be much longer. >> pretty upset about it also. because what if there will be another fire? >> reporter: not just fires, but neighbors like frederick perry worry about medical emergencies. about six months ago, he had a bat fall inside his home. firefighters from station 28 rushed him to the hospital. >> every emergency counts. there's a lot of seniors that live here. >> reporter: the fire chief admits there is no way to sugar coat it. it's a bad situation. but he's forced to temporarily

shut down two stations on monday due to a large city budget deficit. stations 28 and 25. station 10 was already closed and will remain closed because of budget cuts. >> we'll get here as quickly as we can as we always do. it doesn't change how we operate. it changes how the important of time that it gets to us. when you call 911, it will show up for sure. >> reporter: the 24 firefighters at stations 25 and 28 will be transferred to other fire houses in the city. the chief hopes to reopen the two stations in july. in time for the wildfire season. he says they will brown out other stations there. depending on the budget situation. >> and let's see if they could hole their breath because that might be as long until they show up. that's a reality. >> reporter: the fire chief could not say how much slower for the response times since

a bomb, make no mistake. it was a bomb that exploded and it was a fireworks bomb. >> and the bomb unit says an illegal homemade fireworks were recovered from the scene. the city's mayor says the incident is a painful reminder of those imposed by illegal fireworks. would-be skiers and snowboarders on the park city resort this week. some of them stood in line for hours to get onto the ski lift, facing an ongoing ski patrol park. where they met on january 1 and still a lot of work to do to meet the demands for the fair contract. and set to reopen less than two weeks after causing 150-foot section on the wharf to collapse into the ocean. and it has been closed ever since. engineers have been assessing
