community members reported the first antisemitic message, and then more. but on the last day of hanukkah, the antisemitic messages reappeared. >> last year the menorah was broken into pieces and thrown into the lake. we were able to find local volunteers to put it together piece by piece and displayed it outside the center. >> reporter: the volunteers are with the oakland jewish alliance where they work to remove antisemitic vandalism from the community. >> we feel specifically targeted. it feels like we're alone in this endeavor. >> reporter: the founder of oakland jewish alliance says about 140 members from the jewish community across the bay area unite to paint over the antisemitic messages. >> we log eight instances a week. it's been over a year,

ministry says israel has called more than 45,000 palestinians, most of them women and children. they've done it mostly with u.s. weapons and 18 billion in american taxpayer money. protesters are demanding the u.s. government stop that, even as joe biden today promised another $8 billion to support israel's war. also in san francisco, a pedestrian is dead after a hit and run crash that happened tonight near silver and colby streets in the portola neighborhood. police say the victim died at the scene. police have not released any details on the suspect's car. while in the outer richmond people are back home after a gas leak forced 15 people to evacuate this morning. a large white plume was seen shooting into the air near 47th and balboa. they worked on a muni bus. the cause is still under investigation. and staying in the city,

the mayor-electing was out today hosting several neighborhood clean ups ahead of his inauguration. he was joined by about 100 volunteers picking up trash in ingleside saying he wants to kickoff his administration with acts of service for the the community. >> that's the focus of my administration. accountability, change, and service. and everyone needs to do their part for us to reclaim the mantle of being the greatest city in the world, and we're going to get there. >> clean ups are planned in lower knob hill and the mission tomorrow. inration day -- inauguration day is this coming wednesday. fisherman will be allowed to start retrieving crab traps just after midnight tonight. >> but they tell our da lin after so many delays, expect to pay more for this year's catch. >> reporter: the wait is almost

over. fisherman jonathan tin is lining up containers to store hopefully what will be hundreds and hundreds of pounds of crabs come sunday. >> we have a tank on the boat and once the tank is full, we put the the crab in these totes. >> reporter: they'll soon get the long awaited paycheck after a long delay. >> we're excited. >> we're loading the bait onto the boot. >> reporter: the commercial season typically starts mid-november. migrating whales delayed the the start to january 5th. >> it's been extremely tough for us. especially with the loss of the salmon season the past two years. that's half of our income gone, so all we can rely on right now is crabbing. >> usually when we go in november we get the thanksgiving and christmas market, so we get a better price for crab. now the holidays are over, and it impacts the price. >> reporter: kpix 5 followed jonathan out to sea last year when they were retrieving the crab pots. the season was also delayed, but jonathan says they

had a great year catching more than 100,000-pounds of crabs. >> she's three. she's a boat dog. >> reporter: hard to say what this year will look like. they won't know until they retrieve the pots after midnight. >> the boats pull up, they bring them to us, and they're cooked within an hour or two. it doesn't get more fresh than that. >> reporter: local restaurants like the crab house are excited. >> this is the signature dish. skillet roasted crab. >> reporter: bob runs several restaurants at pier 39. the crab they're serving now are from the oregon and washington area. they plan to serve fresh local crab as early as monday. >> we partner with a local guy with a few boat, and he brings them to us the minute they're out of the water. >> reporter: fishermen like jonathan hope to deliver meaty crab soon. >> we go out and harvest

certificate on respect for the aged day, which is a japanese public holiday celebrated annually to honor the country's elders. now a brazilian nun is the world's oldest person. she is 116 and 210 days old. guiness says she's just one of three people still living who was born in the first decade of the, boy, she looks pretty good. she was born in the first decade of the 20th century. >> 116 years old. amazing. eddie murphy made him a household name, but at the time real inspiration behind the donkey from shrek was actually here in the bay area. perry the donkey, who was the model for shrek's side kick, died today at the age of 30 years old. kpix visited perry at the park in palo alto last year. his handler told us one of the

animators lived nearby. over the years his medical bills piled up, and many pitched in to cover the costs. and the santa cruz wharf reopened today after part of it fell into the sea. john ramos takes us there while questions about the future of the wharf continue. >> reporter: the santa cruz wharf is again open for business, and the mayor says it's completely safe, but not everyone shares his confidence that there's nothing more to see here. >> good morning! how is everybody? pretty good day, huh? >> reporter: it was a good day compared to christmas eve when a previously closed 150-foot section at the end of the wharf broke apart sending two buildings, broken pilings, and other debris into the ocean. on this day, the mayor announced that despite the challenges, there was good news.

>> we're trying to emphasize the concept that when you build a half mile long commercial road over open ocean, you'll have to be pretty careful about how you maintain that. what we know is that this wharf is sound and safe for you to be here, for our per chants to open back up, and more people to come here and visit again. >> reporter: the city is declaring it safe after an engineering food, moffat and nicho completed a visual inspection. they said it's good in shape. >> it is aging, it's 110 years old, and there's definitely some wear and tear. but the wharf staff is constantly every day replacing piles, replacing beams, replacing the hardware. that's what was going on when the wharf collapsed. has it

lost significant strength? i don't think so. i think it's still largely in intact condition. >> reporter: the city says the end of the pier collapsed due to damage from two previous storms in late 2023 and early last year. but john bombachi disagrees. he was the wharf supervisor for 20 years before retiring in 2021, and he says back then he was warning the city the struck which are was starting to come apart. >> there was nothing that really happened recently that caused it to go like that. and they'll start to lose other sections of the wharf. we knew this was happening. we made some repairs to band-aid it here and there. >> reporter: do they need to do something for the rest of it to stay up? >> oh, yes. oh, yeah. the next thing that's going to start going is the east parking lot. >> reporter: phillip was in the area and watched as the end of

the wharf collapsed sending huge splintered lumber to beaches as far away as watsonville. >> i saw the piles, and they were rotted inside and not looking perfect condition. and we got many piles here under the pier, and it's 100 years old. so i think the one week for checking the pier is not a long time. we need to check it out probably more, little bit more. >> reporter: but for the people who make their livings on the wharf, time was of the essence, having already lost two important holidays. joel is a third generation candy maker on the wharf 6 who relies on the tourist trade. he's cautiously optimistic that the city's assessment was correct. >> we weren't very happy when they were closed because no one was saying how long it would be. but it's been two weeks, i guess, and we're open. we're praying. supposedly there's big

surf in the next two weeks. i think they can do their job. i'm not pressing the city or holding against the city if something else falls apart, but i think they've got it. >> reporter: everyone is hoping all's well that ends well if it's in fact the end. the mayor says because of climate change it may not make sense to replace the lost portion of the wharf , and the structural engineer thinks it's probably a good idea in the future to close the pier in times of particularly high surf. a good amount of blue sky and sunshine on the wharf in santa cruz today, and tomorrow will go a lot like that. on again and off again. clouds, more blue sky, and a five degree warm up. so it's not like you'll step outside and go oh, wow, it really warmed up. but it's technically going to be about five degrees warmer. let me show you what that means for your part of the bay. we'll get all the daytime highs on here. you pick out your part. it's basically low 60s. this is a trend that keeps going. by wednesday and

thursday, now places like san jose on thursday you'll be about two degrees shy of 70. so look forward to a relatively warm and sunny week. we're out of the rain business for awhile. but we need to talk about missed opportunities for rain that will turn into wind events. i have to show you the first one coming our way on thursday. when we go to the large view and show you the storm that's about to come into the west coast, what you're going the see is an inside slider. we take the forecast and play it straight forward and watch the rain off the coast. watch the time in the bottom left. into monday and tuesday, this storm just drifts down over nevada. play that one more time. it has so much promise, comes to our north, and then makes a hard right turn and slides down the inside of the continent. look what that does to the wind. when these things happen like that, they produce offshore winds for us. that's when we start to get into concerns. if

we didn't have a wonderful start to winter already, we'd be a little concerned about fire weather. but we're off the hook here. instead, as the system comes in, it's going to deliver some very strong winds down to southern california. and as a result, they've got fire weather watches. look at the map for watches and warnings. that's a whole cornucopia of shades down there. that's through tuesday, fire weather concerns. we'll get offshore winds at home here as well. i'll show you what ours will look like. they'll be strong enough that if this was fall and we hadn't had any rain yet, we'd likely have fire concerns. tomorrow's winds not a problem. nice subtle onshore breeze. here's tuesday, big difference. when you look at the wind speeds in the mountains, those are 50 miles per hour cuts tuesday morning. 40 miles per hour on mount diablo. not that windy at the lower elevations, but still about a 20 miles per hour

san francisco is kicking off lunar new year preparations in chinatown. a zodiac themed wall went up today between grant and broadway. volunteers added over 1200 red envelopes filled with new year wishes. the organizers says the iconic wall attracts visitors for photos and shares positive messages each year. this year marks the tenth anniversary of the zodiac wall installation in chinatown. tomorrow night the 82nd golden globes air here on cbs. netflix's emilia perez tops the nominations with ten, including best comedy and musical. on the comedy side, fx's the bear leads, following with only murders in the bidding and shogun with four
