>> it's monday, january 6th, 2025. this is "cbs news mornings." monster storm. tens of millions of americans under winter weather alerts as snow, ice, whipping winds, and arctic temperatures march across the country. four years later. security stepped up on capitol hill as lawmakers are set to gather today to certify donald

trump's election win four years to the day after his supporters violently tried to stop the proceedings. and consoler-in-chief. president biden heads to new orleans today to mourn with the city still reeling from last week's terror attack as the fbi releases new details and video of the attacker scouting locations. good morning. i'm michael george. well, this storm is massive, spanning 1,000 miles from missouri to the east coast. and right now more than 50 million people are under winter weather alerts as the dangerous combination of snow, ice, and freezing rain moves through the ohio valley and into the mid-atlantic with some places seeing the heaviest snowfall in a decade. the storm is making travel extremely hazardous with hundreds of accidents, and some roads impassable, stranding drivers. it's also wreaking havoc on the nation's airports with thousands of flights canceled or delayed over the weekend.

cbs' naomi ruchim is tracking it all and joins us now with an update. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the powerful winter storm is bringing treacherous blizzard conditions to some areas, while the national weather service has issued storm alerts and warnings all the way from arkansas and missouri through the mid-atlantic and up to new jersey. icy roads led to dangerous conditions throughout the midwest, including kansas city where a truck jackknifed on a highway. drivers were urged to stay off the roads altogether, and a part of a major interstate was shut down yesterday. louisville, kentucky, saw more than nine inches of snow in one day for the first time since 1998. the governor declared a state of emergency there. the snow and wind caused whiteout conditions in parts of indiana where the national guard was activated to help stranded drivers. a state of emergency was

declared in the city of jeffersonville and nearby floyd county near the kentucky border. only emergency vehicles were allowed on roads. more than 100,000 customers lost power in missouri, indiana, illinois, and kentucky, as electric lines and trees toppled. the winter weather also forced many school districts to cancel classes today which was supposed to be the first day back after winter break for most districts. and a hard freeze is expected as far south as northern florida where some forecasts are showing temperatures dropping as low as the teens and 20s, michael. imagine that in florida. >> ooh, brutal. naomi ruchim, thanks for keeping us updated. it's hard to make out the capitol with the winter storm hitting d.c. now, but the snow is not stopping congress from meeting in joint session to certify the electoral results of the 2024 presidential election. security will be tight, and

thousands of additional police officers will be on hand four years after donald trump's supporters attacked the capitol to try to prevent congress from certifying joe biden's victory in the 2020 election. vice president kamala harris will preside over today's events in her role as president of the senate. democrats say there will be no attempt made to challenge the results. of course you'll remember four years ago today a mob stormed the capitol as trump tried to get then-vice president mike pence to stop the election certification. in florida over the weekend president trump spoke at a screening of a documentary questioning the legitimacy of the 2020 election. >> as they should have been able to, and they said he's not allowed to do it. he's not allowed to do it. and they convinced him he wasn't allowed to do. it our vice president. >> to be still trying to fight a fight that he knows he lost is really sad.

>> trump has promised to issue pardons to many of the more than 1,500 charged with crimes in connection with the january 6th riot. president biden and the first lady head to new orleans today to grieve with the families impacted by the new year's terror attack. his visit comes as the fbi revealed new details about the attacker. they released video they say shows shamsud-din jabbar scouting out the city during two trips to the big easy as he plotted the attack. he also made two trips abroad to egypt and canada. cbs' bradley blackburn has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: new video suggests the attack in new orleans new year's day could have been even more deadly. the fbi says security cameras show the attacker placing multiple improvised explosive devices around bourbon street early new year's day that did not detonate because of a mistake he made in assembly. >> he didn't use the right, the correct device to set it off, and that is just -- indicative

of his lack of understanding. >> reporter: officials say what unfolded when he rammed his truck into victims killing 14 was an act of terrorism. the attacker, shamsud-din jabbar, had proclaimed support for isis. and while the fbi still believes he acted alone, they are investigating trips he took to egypt and canada in 2023 and two previous visits to new orleans. they say in october, 2024, he used meta's smart glasses with embedded cameras to record these videos of bourbon street plotting his attack. >> we have not seen any indications of an accomplice in the united states. but we are still looking into potential associates in the u.s. and outside of our borders. >> reporter: saturday night in the french quarter, crowds gathered for a vigil with moments of silence and music distinct to the city. ♪ the family of one of those killed, terrence kennedy, spoke to cbs news. >> my brother was a jolly person. my brother wasn't no violent

person. for somebody to just take his life away. >> reporter: louisiana's governor has ordered a day of mourning for each of the victims beginning monday. bradley blackburn, cbs news, new york. this is the third day of public services for former president jimmy carter who died a week ago at the age of 100. his body is currently lying in repose at the carter center in atlanta before services move to washington, d.c., tomorrow. cbs' cristian benevides joins us from atlanta as americans pay tribute to the longest lived president in u.s. history. good morning. >> reporter: michael, good morning. it is the third day of remembrance, and people from all over the country have been stopping here at the carter center to pay their respects before that state funeral takes place later this week. crowds of mourners filed past the flag-draped casket of former president jimmy carter in atlanta over the weekend. >> i've let everyone know that when the day came that i plan to be here. >> reporter: carrie lewis traveled from manhattan, kansas,

with a good friend to pay her respects. she says she's followed carter's career since his election when she was in the second grade. what do you make of his legacy? >> he's just such a selfless man. so wonderful to be able to witness someone that was so giving to this country. >> reporter: others also left tributes to his legacy at the growing memorial outside of the carter center. >> this is a world of thanks to president jimmy carter. he was just the most amazing human being. >> reporter: there was a steady stream of mourners stopped by to pay their respects here in atlanta throughout the weekend. today could be even busier given it's the last day he will lie in repose here at the carter center. tomorrow funeral services will shift to washington, d.c. carter's body will be transported to the u.s. capitol where he'll lie in state until thursday's state funeral. president joe biden will deliver one of the eulogies. president-elect donald trump says he will attend. the day of the funeral has also been declared a national day of mourning as the country says its

"reuters" reports hamas says it's approved an israeli list of 34 hostages to be released in a possible cease-fire deal. the hamas official says any deal is contingent on israel's withdrawal from gaza and a permanent cease-fire. renewed push is under way to reach a deal and return the hostages before president-elect donald trump takes office. on saturday, hamas released a
