>> reporter: multiple wildfires burning tonight, with tens of thousands forced out of their homes. by this is being called a worst-case scenario. then, a new chapter in an american nightmare. a kidnapper admitted to carrying out similar crimes decades before he was arrested. and lips a >> thank you and i will see you tomorrow. >> san francisco's mayor hours before he will be sworn in. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey. >> hi, i am sara donchey alongside chief meteorologist, paul heggen, we are watching a major disaster playing out in parts of southern california. >> this is essentially a worst case scenario, when it comes to wildfire conditions. there are now multiple wildfires burning out of control. it has already been a long night there. unfortunately things are only going to get worse overnight. >> yeah, we are seeing that happen right now, we will run down the absolute wild video we have seen today and tonight,
11:02 pm
these are live pictures courtesy of our stationed in downtown los angeles, this is the palisades fire burning alongside a site. this fire has exploded over the last couple of hours, well, as you can see, not really what firefighters want to see, given how strong the winds are right now. >> right, the wind is a huge part of the problem. the fire want to burn uphill and you can see that play with his life video. but the wind is actually pushing the fire downhill in a direction it doesn't want to go , including places that are ordinarily out of the reach of these dangerous buyers. firmly within reach, unfortunately , as we have seen frequently today. >> yeah, let's show you more if the video burning in the palisades earlier today. several homes were burning there in this clip. many more have burned. we have no idea at this point how many structures have burned. firefighters are still trying to fight this one as we speak. they probably will be for days. we also just learned from l.a. fire that multiple people have been hurt. a firefighter who sustained a serious head injury was taken to the hospital and multiple
11:03 pm
people who had been spotted walking to a restaurant with burn injuries. they were going there for help. at least 30,000 people are under evacuation from calabasas to parts of santa monica and a new fire just broke out near sylmar. a lot of people who were trying to escape earlier today are trying to do it fast come as fast as they could, there were multiple traffic jams. some people ditched their cars on foot . the fire department had to do this, they used a bulldozer to push cars out of the roads so crews could get through to keep fighting the fire. >> oh my god get in the car. tell her to get in the car. >> that is a woman who was trying to get out of the path of wire to get to her car. a photographer who was there shooting video of fire saw her, picked her up and drove her to safety. another major brush fire is burning right now too. this is the heat and fire which is burning in the foothills of the san gabriel mountains
11:04 pm
evacuation orders are in place of those . >> it is heartbreaking we just got into hours ago, a senior center close to where this fire was burning had to be evacuated all of the sudden into the in the middle of some seriously intense >> are you hoping to evacuate? >> yes what what is it like getting people off? it is tough. it is tough they are stuck on the wheelchairs. we have got to lift them up and put them in the vans at the same time. so, we have got to get everybody out of here >> everyone got out safely, as far as you know >> you must have been moving toward you guys really quickly. oh yeah, it is crazy out here. i have got to get a couple more. >> that was the voice of reporter, nicole comstock. she has gotten an update on the reporting near the 10 fire pit >> yeah, the city of altadena
11:05 pm
is doing everything they can to help evacuate these senior centers in altadena. right now they are actually floating people of any pasadena s.w.a.t. vehicle. i heard they are taking some of them to the pasadena center, so it sounds like that is probably one of these mass evacuation shelters. to get all of these evacuees who have had to flee this fire. you can see all of the smoke and embers flying down the street. it has really intensified out here probably the past 20 or 30 minutes. we are about a little more than half a mile , actually look, there are planes in front of this apartment building across the street here. looks like an apartment building and washington boulevard about half a mile or a little bit more away from eaton canyon, just south of that area on altadena drive. and you can see it is spotting half a mile, three
11:06 pm
orders of a mile away and catching areas, this is residential over here. this is technically pasadena, but we are at altadena drive area, there is a mcdonald's across the street. the 711 arcing lot fire pit at least 95 people from this one two senior centers that needed to be evacuated tonight were just kind of sitting around waiting for an hour with employees around them trying to help them, keep them comfortable with is as best as they could until they could get them to a safer location. i believe those two centers where the terraces in marino and pasadena village senior center we are told some of these people are being taken to a location , we spoke with one woman a short time ago was out here -- sorry, i don't know if you guys can hear me, because it is so windy out
11:07 pm
there. i'm going to try to move away toward an area with a little more cover so you can hear a woman a short time ago for her sister and arcing lot being healed across the street as we came up here. we spoke with another man who says he and knew he had a friend nearby in an apartment. as he took a crowbar and bashed out her window to get her out she didn't know at the time there is a fire so close to her. so those are the things people are experiencing tonight to get their loved ones to safety. we spoke with another woman who said she with her people, seniors in a parking lot and she brought a bunch of gets so that she could make this a little less terrible for them to >> and we keep using the word worst-case scenario, because it was almost like the worst combination of environmental factors going into tonight. and
11:08 pm
now the worst case scenario is playing out. >> yeah, so, two different factors playing out, when complete lack of rainfall southern california has seen so far. literally visible from space. this is the satellite perspective, using the specific wavelength and look towards southern california, there are a couple of black dots here , those are the fires. we are looking at the entire north american here and you can see those fires from space standing out, just exceptional growth to these fires over the past 12 hours or so. now, we want to talk about the wings first. don't worry about the specific numbers here, just look at the numbers on the map. the threshold for the severe thunderstorm warning, the threshold is 58 miles per hour. these are all the 50 mile-per-hour gusts that have been recorded in southern california since been today. there are over 100 of these the threshold for a hurricane is 74 miles an hour and there have been a couple of dozen of those reports in southern california. take a look at the peak dust that has been recorded in the
11:09 pm
hills above san bernardino. 103 miles per hour for the peak wind gust reported there a number over 90 miles per hour and the peak wind are actually going to occur as we head through the rest of the night. it has been a set up that has really just been caused by the atmosphere as a whole. there is an area of low pressure cut off, racing to west end accelerating as it goes down the hill. this is the whole depth of the atmosphere, it's just a moment is pushing the air towards the coast, racing along 82-100 miles per hour, those gusts will be problematic as we go through the rest of tonight. this, again, a worst-case scenario, partly because of the lack of rainfall they have been experiencing in southern california, virtually zero rain along north of i-80 we have had plenty of rain, which is why we do not face a significant wildfire threat. unfortunately, we will have to continue to monitor the situation in southern california and also our forecast in just a bit gets back paul, thank you so much, we appreciate the update. we are learning more about

blotch on the map, and this is the concern that new fire is breaking out and blowing off the existing buyers and the pushed along, by the 60-70, even 80-100 mile an hour winds. the forecast model data, unfortunately, is not going to be able to keep up with this intensity, there is just so much that the computers don't take into account but even those are showing those 70 mile an hour gusts around pasadena comes to miles per hour into early tomorrow morning. the strongest gust will occur between tomorrow and sunrise but even as we gradually , they will still be is a 30- 40 miles per hour range, by midday tomorrow. a little break from the strongest winds, but still, enough to really challenge fire crews as they try to get a handle on some of these fires tomorrow evening, then another burst of offshore winds will likely develop on thursday, again, not as intense, but the elastic this fire crews as they try to get a handle on the fires. around the bay area though? it has been a blustery day in the wind advisory does

continue for almost the entire bay area until 10:00 tomorrow the winds have been blowing over a landscape that has soaked by the rain we have seen over the past six or seven weeks those offshore winds would be much more problematic it wasn't for the moisture that we have added up over the course of the past month and a half or so. take a look at the peak does, some of this close to 40 miles per hour for half moon bay, but 25 miles per hour for san jose get over 40 miles per hour gusted livermore, 46 miles of the oak airport thinking, 40 mile an hour gusts coming up also at 40 mile an hour gusts, these gusts, again, strong enough to move around road, strong enough to be in, but fortunately without the potential for disaster we have seen over southern california. the winds will continue to diminish as we had through the rest of tonight to let go to future cast and track our wind through the overnight hours. we will see those gradually diminishing. our strongest winds occurring between now and
