raging infernos. three wind-fueled wildfires now burning out of control in the los angeles area. >> we saw literally flaming debris, landed in the road. >> i'm petrified. my heart is in my throat. >> as people race to escape, cars abandoned in the middle of the road in the frantic rush to get to safety as homes and vehicles go up in flames. good morning. i'm michael george. it is a frightening life-threatening situation unfolding now making in southern california, and the worst could still be to come. three wildfires are now burning, fueled by powerful santa ana winds with hurricane-force gusts higher than 80 miles per hour. about 30,000 residents are under evacuation orders. more than 13,000 structures under threat, and an untold number of homes have been destroyed.

the pacific palisades fire exploded in size, spreading to more than 2,900 acres in a neighborhood of multimillion dollar homes. the eaton fire has burned 1,000 acres near altadena. the hurst fire broke out a short time ago. danya bacchus joins us. are firefighters making any progress here? >> reporter: good morning, michael. it's hard to say if firefighters are making any progress. that's because this situation is extremely overwhelming for them. so much so that for the first time in 19 years, the los angeles fire department has put out a call to all off-duty officers to call in for their availability. right now at this moment this morning, the focus is on protecting lives and property. firefighters pushed to the brink while now trying to contain multiple fast-spreading brush fires that have engulfed homes.

>> this is right at my doorstep. >> reporter: and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents. >> let's get out of here. whatever i lose i lose. >> reporter: the massive fire in los angeles exploded in a matter of hours, leaving some residents and news crews to run to safety. >> got to go. >> reporter: hundreds of motorists and their pets had no choice but to abandon their cars on the highway. >> there's a lot of fire right there. that's why we were coming. we leave the car. >> reporter: bulldozers were used to move some vehicles out of the way so emergency personnel could get through. further inland, the eaton canyon fire has rapidly burned hundreds of acres, forcing the swift evacuation of a center living -- senior living center. >> it's tough. we got to lift them up, put them in the vans, take the wheelchairs. you got to get everybody out of here. >> reporter: this is what firefighters are up against -- they've been fighting flames like this throughout the night. and because of the high winds gusts, they're unable to fly water-dropping aircraft that are crucial to this fire-fight.

>> we're working seamlessly and closely to ensure that we are protecting lives and property first. >> reporter: the national weather service predicts the winds will weaken later today. though the extent of the damage from these fast-spreading fires is yet to be seen. right now we are in the peak of those wind gusts that could reach up to 100 miles per hour in some areas. and this morning we still don't know the extent of the damage, and probably it will not be until daybreak that we see the scope of what's been done by the fires. >> danya bacchus on the front lines in los angeles, stay safe out there. president-elect donald trump outlined his plans for expanded u.s. dominance, explaining why in his mind america should essentially rewrite the map of the western hemisphere and even rename the gulf of mexico. cbs' caitlin huey-burns has the details.

>> reporter: in a remarkable moment at mar-a-lago, president-elect donald trump said he wanted the united states to take over the panama canal and greenland, and that he won't rule out the use of military force to do it. >> no, i can't assure you on either of those two. but i can say this -- we need them for economic security. look, the panama canal is vital to our country. it's being operated by china. >> reporter: the u.s. transferred operational control of the panama canal in 1999, and chinese shipping has increasingly used the key trade route. the arctic island of greenland is a territory of denmark. >> we need greenland for national security purposes. you look outside, you have china ships all over the place. you have russian ships all over the place. we're not letting that happen. >> reporter: but as donald trump jr. landed in greenland's capital for what he called a personal visit, the danish prime minister made clear that the

territory was not for sale. the president-elect also suggested using economic force to annex canada, making it the 51st state. >> we're spending hundreds of billions a year to take care of canada. we lose in trade deficits. >> reporter: canadian prime minister justin trudeau said there isn't a snowball's chance in hell that his country would become part of the united states. trump also said he wants to rename the gulf of mexico the gulf of america. >> what a beautiful name. >> reporter: trump secured a legal victory when a judge in florida temporarily blocked the release of special counsel jack smith's final report on his investigations. but trump's attempt to delay the sentencing in his new york hush-money case was denied. that will go forward as scheduled on friday. caitlin huey-burns, cbs news, west palm beach, florida. there are new details about the new year's day explosion of a cybertruck outside the trump

hotel in los angeles. police released new video of army green beret matthew livelsberger pouring racing fuel onto the back of the cybertruck when investigators said there was more than 60 pounds of explosive material. police say livelsberger used the a.i. platform chatgpt to plan the bombing, including asking questions about the amount of explosives he would need and how certain explosives compare to dynamite. investigators also said they discovered a six-page document on his phone which indicated he only planned to kill himself. and the fbi released a new photo of the man behind the new year's terror attack in new orleans riding a bike through the french quarter in october. authorities say shamsud-din jabbar visited the city twice in the fall to scout locations. and cbs news has obtained a photo showing what a law enforcement official said is one of two ieds he placed in coolers in the french quarter. americans are getting the chance to pay their final respects to jimmy carter.

the 39th president is lying in state in the capitol rotunda until his funeral tomorrow. carter returned to washington yesterday with the ceremonial pomp and rituals reserved for presidents. the kind he often flouted himself. cbs' scott macfarlane reports. >> reporter: a final trip to washington for the 39th president. the procession for jimmy carter, who was a navy veteran, included a motorcade to the u.s. naval memorial, then a horse-drawn caisson procession to the capitol on the east front where carter took the oath of office in 1977. in a casket sitting on the same wooden framework used for abraham lincoln after lincoln's assassination in 1865. a formal and elaborate set of honors for a form president who was known to refuse some of the trappings of his office. carter famously carried his own bags and banned the playing of "hail to the chief" when he was in the white house. his death and the services for the longest living u.s.

for real. ♪entyvio, entyvio, entyvio♪ we have a passenger who opened the emergency exit door, trying to step out of the airplane. >> some terrifying moments for passengers on a jetblue flight at logan airport in boston last night. the faa says a passenger suddenly opened an emergency exit door just as the plane was ready to take off for puerto rico. state police escorted the man off the plane. passengers say he'd been arguing with his girlfriend. he's due in court today to face charges. no one was hurt. fraternity members are charged after one of them was set on fire, and a stowaway investigation. those are some of the headlines we're following on the "morning newsstand." "cbs miami" reports two people were found dead in the landing gear compartment of a jetblue plane in florida. the bodies of two men were discovered monday night during a

routine inspection after the plane from new york landed at international airport. the plane had also been in kingston, jamaica, and salt lake city earlier in the day. it's not clear how or when the men were able to get into the landing gear. "the san diego union-tribune" says four san diego state university fraternity members face felony charges after one of them, a pledge, was set on fire. it happened last february during a skit performed at a party. the 19-year-old student was in the hospital with third-degree burns. the frat was already on probation for violating alcohol policies. the defendants could face more than seven years in prison. and the "associated press" says the justice department is suing six major landlords for allegedly scheming to keep rents high. prosecutors say the landlords used an algorithm to help sent rents and privately shared sensitive information with competitors to boost profits. the accused landlords operate

it's time to get back to our roots around free expression on facebook and instagram. the fact-checkers have been too politically biased and have destroyed more trust than they've created. >> reporter: meta ceo mark zuckerberg announced major changes including an end to the fact-checking program relying on users instead. >> it means we're going to catch less bad stuff. but it will reduce the number of innocent people's posts and accounts that we accidentally take down. >> reporter: what does this look like? whether it's instagram or facebook, you'll see a notes label as you do on x. for example, this elon musk most users added this context. but critics warn removing fact-checkers could breed misinformation. the international fact-checking network, one of the third parties used by meta, tells cbs it's unfortunate that this decision comes in the wake of extreme political pressure, but some are cheering the move including president-elect donald trump. >> honestly i think they've come a long way, meta, facebook. >> you think he's directly

the group rose to family in the '60s with their songs about war and social injustice. among hits were "puff the magic dragon" and "blowin' in the wind." they performed at the 1963 civil right march in on washington and won five grammys. peter yarrow was 86. in cbs "moneywatch," tesla cars now the target of a federal investigation. and easing medical debt for some 15 million americans. here's carissa lawson. >> reporter: stocks closed in the red on tuesday after the latest economic report showed a rise in job openings. the dow dropped 178 points. the nasdaq last 375, and the s&p 500 shed 66 points. millions of americans living with medical debt could soon find it easier to get loans. the biden administration announced a new rule that will ban the three credit reporting agencies from including past due medical bills in credit reports. the move could help boost those
