12:00 pm
right now in the afternoon edition of 3.0 earthquake just struck off san francisco just over an hour ago. this is a
12:01 pm
look at the seismograph. it is the latest in a series of quakes felt across the bay area this morning. good afternoon, i'm ryan yamamoto. so did you feel them? the largest quake this morning. downgraded to a 3.6 just minutes ago. many people in san francisco and beyond reported feeling that one just after 7:00 this morning, the epicenter was just offshore near the san francisco zoo. it is believed the quake took place along the san andreas fault. it was reportedly felt as far north as santa rosa and as far south as santa cruz. it was followed by a few aftershocks in the same area, the largest that 3.0 that struck about 1048 this morning. the zoo says there was no damage and that all the animals are fine. it will continue to operate as normal today. and for more, let's head over to first alert meteorologist zoe mintz. zoe, >we were just wondering what the heck is going on. so much shaking today. very, very thankful that it wasn't worse. we only saw a maximum magnitude of 3.6. the usgs officially
12:02 pm
downgraded it, but either way, the first one was at 702 very early this morning. then there was an aftershock at around 939. that was a level 2.5 magnitude, then another one at 1048. we all felt the first one, the second one and the third one's all across san francisco. the third one, especially in magnitude 3.0, felt it shake a little bit, but it wasn't that rolling earthquake where you feel a build up and then get a little bit lesser. it was more of just that one rapid shake. it kind of felt like something dropped, something heavy, and then it was away from us. again, not too much damage, but definitely concern when it comes to having to prepare for the next one, because who knows what the next one could be bigger. and we want to make sure that we are prepared. we all have our go bags ready, but either way, when it comes to weather here in the bay area, it's going to remain dry. it's going to remain quiet. high temperatures this afternoon are going to be well above average once again warming up all across the bay area into the 60s for our
12:03 pm
inland locations all the way to the coast. it is going to be above average anywhere from five to nearly ten degrees above normal for this time of year, filled with plenty of sunshine, but you might notice just a little bit of haze in the sky that's actually from wildfire smoke in southern california. i'll let you know how long it's going to stick around. that will be coming up in my full forecast. back to you. >all right. thanks, zoe. and back to our top story. firefighters are still making progress after four days of battling devastating wildfires across southern california. those fires have killed at least ten people, and that number is expected to rise. the flames destroying more than 9000 structures. the area is still under a red flag warning. that is until 6:00 tonight, but crews are now hoping to take advantage of easing winds before extreme conditions do return. on monday, crews moved in quickly to attack a new brush fire. this is in the area of the granada hills, northwest of los angeles, near interstate five. it's called the archer fire. it broke out just before 1030. mandatory evacuations were ordered. aerial footage showed the fire burning in

brush near a neighborhood where crews making aerial water drops. and this is the latest cal fire map, giving some perspective on where the major fires are burning. the largest, the palisades fire in the malibu area and the eaton fire in pasadena. altadena area. firefighters have stopped forward movement of the kenneth fire that broke out yesterday afternoon in the calabasas area, and we're starting to see containment slowly, slowly tick up on the two biggest fires. the eaton fire, 3% contained after damaging more than 9000 structures and vehicles around altadena. it is burning very close to the communication towers on mount wilson, causing some signal issues for la tv stations this morning and the palisades fire that is 8% contained after breaking out on tuesday in the pacific palisades area and spreading to malibu. new aerial footage from this morning shows the scope of that destruction. it has damaged at least 5300 structures and vehicles, and today the national guard will begin patrolling some areas. 20
12:05 pm
people have been arrested for looting in the two fires, and a curfew will be in effect in the fire zone starting this evening. for the very latest on the firefight, now go live to charlie demar, live in altadena. charlie. >and ryan, we are in hard-hit altadena. this is what so many homes look like block after block. just completely leveled shells of one of what they once were. i want to give you a look at what this looks like here. what we have seen in many of these homes, you can see water from some of the homes there. what was possibly the kitchen, the fireplace, the fire stack is still standing here. but as for the fires, the palisades fire, that pacific palisades fire that is the largest fire right now. and as firefighters continuously continue to feverishly try and fight that fire, it is still burning. they're trying to put out that fire along with so many others. >strong wind gusts remained a problem for firefighters friday as they battle multiple
12:06 pm
wildfires that have devastated los angeles county. >the eaton fire current estimated acreage 13,956 acres with 3% containment. >overnight, firefighters notched a win, stopping much of the kenneth fire. residents there described the panic of being told to evacuate. >you're just grabbing kind of the first thing you see, and then you get out of there and you kind of realize all all these other memorable or sentimental items that you may have left >in the pacific palisades. mandatory evacuations turned sunset boulevard into a parking lot as people fled their cars >in the car was the the important stuff we needed, and we lost it. >some who did not leave paid with their lives, including 66 year old victor shaw, who died in the eaton fire. he was found with a garden hose still in hand. >i just cry. i just can't believe that it's happened and
12:07 pm
it happened so quickly. >the smoke is still thick here in altadena, california, which was hit hard by the eaton fire. now the national guard has posted up at intersections like this one to keep looters away at the ymca of metropolitan los angeles, volunteers collected clothes and other necessities for the tens of thousands of evacuees. >you can tell down here we have boxes of clothing, okay, that will be distributed. >forecasters say while the wind is expected to weaken as the day goes on, dangerous conditions are in the forecast for next week. >and as crews continue to fight this fire from the air, the faa is sending a strong warning not to fly drones. as yesterday a drone actually clipped the wing of a super scooper aircraft and grounded it. we're told that that aircraft will not be in the air fighting these fires until the earliest on monday. ryan. >all right. thanks, charlie. reporting live from altadena for us this morning. >and >>cbs is partnering with the red cross to raise money for

12:09 pm

12:13 pm
downy ultra soft is not only luxuriously soft and fresh, well, this morning, families in southern california are returning to the rubble in altadena. this cell phone video shows what a family of four saw as they drove by what's left of their home town. former kpix reporter and anchor amanda starrantino has been covering the fire since it started, and surveyed some of the damage this morning. >a lot of people have nothing, so this weekend, i don't even think they can come back to their properties and even start the rebuild process. it's going to be a very, very long time until then. but i want to show you this picture here. just look at this street. it's beautiful, these trees. you can only imagine what a beautiful neighborhood this was. but then the reality is,
12:14 pm
every single direction you look at this intersection here in altadena is destroyed. all these homes are down. this was just lined with homes. and so homes, yes, they can be replaced. those memories though, hopefully people were able to get some photos. anything keepsakes before they had to quickly evacuate here. but there are some things that you just can't replace. and this property really just caught our eye here. all these classic old cars. and i looked at the google images of what this street looked like. this was a beautiful green car parked right in front. so this is a 1940s chevy. it's got the old three spoke wheel. those are hard to come by. the spare tire kit on it. this is like those old gangster cars you used to see. it has those suicide doors so it open like this. you can't replace this. you got another 1947 coupe right here. you can't even tell what this car is here. just the fire completely took over it. but my photographer mike looks back on that car back there. this one is pretty cool. it's a 1960s lincoln continental. this
12:15 pm
is like the car that president jfk wrote in. that's like a convertible. really neat to see another chevy next to it. we have some oldsmobiles over here. you can tell by their front very distinct. and then we have one more neat one that i want to show you over here. this is a desoto. it's a custom right here in front. and so if you look at some video that we showed you, my photographer mike mcgregor, who's with me, he shot this while all of this was going up in flames. and, he had to stop because he, he collects classic cars as well. and it's just devastating to see what people left behind. and, you know, the homes are so hard. and for some people, cars are just as important to them. so these important keepsakes that people really put their heart into, you know, memories are surrounded by these cars. people bring them to shows, they bring people together, and they're just left here. and it just looks like a hollywood scene. and if you look behind me, this is a beautiful, huge home for people. it looks like it has a wonderful backyard and it's now completely gone. and people can't even come back to even sift through anything. but
12:16 pm
there's nothing you can really take from this. there's nothing to salvage here, and there's nothing really to be saved. it's so sad. there's even still some smoldering here. again, all these roads are blocked off. to anyone getting back here, you have to be credentialed and you have to be an essential worker or first responder to be back here. so no one really being able to come back to their properties. there's also been reports of people looting in here. so law enforcement is being very, very careful about who's coming back here. but for the homes that are still standing, which are not many at this point, but just the memories and just so much loss here in altadena. >absolutely devastating down there. and they're going to continue to see some stronger winds tomorrow, as will we. wind gusts are going to pick up those diablo winds for us. the santa ana winds down south. however for us those northerly winds are actually going to push away the wildfire smoke from those wildfires in southern california, because right now they're actually wrapping around an area of low
12:17 pm
pressure, and they will be impacting parts of the bay area, maybe mainly the southern half of the bay area, as it wraps around that area of low pressure. however, those northerly winds that are going to pick up by as soon as late tonight and into tomorrow are going to push all of that smoke off and away from our inland communities. so it's good news when it comes to the smoke. bad news when it comes to increasing that dry air and fire danger. so it's something we'll continue to keep a very close eye on as those winds increase. right now, though, it is quiet. it is calm. we are seeing those high temperatures this afternoon in the 60s. it's absolutely beautiful out there overnight tonight and into early tomorrow morning. we'll see our temperatures very seasonable, very mild for this time of year, sitting in the 40s for our inland communities to upper 40s closer to our coastal areas. however, we are going to be noticing our winds picking up overnight. that's definitely going to be the biggest impact of our overnight hours are the winds that are going to not only switch direction coming in from the onshore direction today,
12:18 pm
transitioning to that offshore direction. again, it's the diablo winds that are going to pick up tomorrow. we're actually seeing the wind advisory in effect. but you notice the location of the wind advisories. it's on the mountains. it's in the highest elevations of the bay area that we are going to be seeing those 35 plus to maybe even 50 plus mile an hour gusts. not to say our lower elevations aren't going to be windy because they are, but not necessarily windy enough to create a wind advisory because you have to see those 35 to 50 mile an hour winds to actually need the wind advisory. either way, though, we are going to continue to see dry and quiet conditions and breezy to windy conditions as well. again, lower elevations 15 to 25 miles an hour. higher elevations 25 to 35, and then those isolated 50 plus mile an hour gusts. the windy conditions will stick around throughout the day saturday. that wind advisory eventually expiring by sunday. however, dry air is going to stick around well past that throughout the entirety of our next seven days, if not beyond. it's going to remain dry. it's
