now at 11:00, a neighborhood spared from the palisades fire is being evacuated. an update on where the fire is spreading. >> i did a take, thinking we were going to come back. a man missing some important treasures from his late wife from the eaton fire. the miraculous discovery he made in the middle of the ashes. in oakland, a house still

boarded up is being targeted by thieves. >> they walk in and no way there is a downtown. an east bay town getting its first cannabis shop. why its manager hopes it will give the neighborhood a boost. hello, i'm sara donchey, on a very difficult friday night. just when southern californians were hoping things might get better, the winds die down there after all. things seem to be getting worse tonight with entire neighborhoods that have been nowhere near these fires that are having to evacuate because the palisades fire is spreading towards a very populated part of los angeles. let's go ahead and take a look at some of these live pictures as it's burning right now, courtesy of the helicopter from our sister station in los angeles. a brand new flare-up is burning towards

both brentwood and incino. the palisades fire has taken out 11,000 structures, many of them homes. it's only 8% contained, but again this is the problem and where the fire is advancing is incredibly concerning for first responders. now the eaton fire has burned more than 13,000 acre. it's only 3% contained tonight. a curfew is in place right now. but earlier a lot of people did get to go back to check on their homes or survey the damage. our katie nielsen was in altadena along with others ready to help. >> reporter: this is the first full day the california national guard has been here at the eaton fire. there is a strict curfew in effect for tonight into 6:00 tomorrow morning that started just a few hours ago. it's going to continue on every night indefinitely. that's because looting has been a problem so far. 20 people have been arrested inside the evacuation zones, here at the eaton fire, and also at the palisades fire. for the folks who still have

homes here, they say having that extra presence gives them some peace of mind. >> reporter: doug rogers stayed behind on wednesday morning during the worst of the fire storm in altadena, desperate to save his house. >> i saw embers flying. little fires starting. and i knew we had a spot, so i just carried as many buckets as i could for as long as i could, and kept fighting. >> reporter: he doesn't have any fire fighting experience. he's a nurse. now all the homes on his block and across the street are gone, except the four he protected with his home depot buckets. >> there is no way to get anymore out of it. >> reporter: and now mixed emotions as the reality of what happened sinks in. >> thank goodness. just can't express how much i feel for these other people. >> reporter: a few blocks over,

david and his two kids are going around turning off water and gas lines, baffled by the slow response. >> we saw a person who worked for the gas company. he walked up to me and said hey, where is house number blah, blah, blah? and we're like why? i need to turn off the gas. >> i'm like dude, look around. flare, flare, flare, flare. the house you're talking about is way over here. >> reporter: small acts of kindness. people helping neighbors, oftentimes they didn't even know. >> you definitely see a lot of strength, a lot of resiliency that will come out of the bad, comes with a lot of good. >> reporter: paul knows this firsthand. not only was he on the ground in 2017 during the santa rosa fires, but he also lost his own home. and now, he's here in altadena, yet another personal connection. >> this is a community that i grew up in. i am glad, almost honored to be able to help this

community right now. >> and so what is happening in l.a. has definitely been on the minds of people here in the bay area. a group of people in oakland are especially concerned about how vulnerable they might be to any kind of fires. the city has temporarily shut down two fire stations in the oakland hills because of its budget crunch. more closures could be on the way. our lauren toms talked to concerned neighbors and city leaders who say the situation in l.a. should make officials reconsider. >> reporter: when john cook pulled up to this fire house on grass valley road in oakland, he had a plan to try to save it from closing. >> i was going to ask them how can we support you for keeping this station open? i had no idea. >> reporter: but he was shocked to learn it was too late. this fire house closest to his home was one of two to temporarily close as oakland tries to remedy a nearly $130 million budget deficit. but for john

who uses a wheelchair, it's a terrifying reality, as he takes in stories from those in southern california of not being able to evacuate on time. does that scare you at all? >> yes, it does because you have to come up to get into this area. >> reporter: the closures are expected to lead to an increased response time for emergencies. that sounds alarm bells for fire union president. >> folks are going to be waiting double or triple the amount of time for help, when their heart stops or they can't breathe. we are in dire straights. this is a matter of life or death. >> reporter: both engine 25 and 28 that have already shuttered their doors, were some of the first on scene back in october when the keller fire broke out. even the fire chief admitted it may have been a much different scenario had the stations been closed when that fire broke out. >> the amount of work that they did initially made the difference between saving the

houses up on campus drive verses talking about a very different experience with tens of millions of dollars in fire loss and potentially lives lost. >> reporter: dennis adams lives just a couple miles from where the keller fire broke out. he said the area by engine 28 is a popular dumping site for cars that are often set ablaze with combustible materials nearby. >> the difference between a fire spreading, potentially destroying a hillside verses a fire being put out down the street and this fire house being open or not open. >> reporter: he and others are calling for elected officials to reconsider the closures. ken houston is the newly elected council member for district seven. he tells me he is committed to finding the funds to reopen the station in his district. >> they said they would keep it closed for approximately five months, six-month period, and then they will close another one and reopen this. that is not good enough for me. just open it back up in three. i'm

not saying it will, but i will push the envelope to open it back up. >> reporter: but as he looks in the windows of the vacant station that has had one break-in, he has volunteered to protect it himself, with a warning to looters. >> you've got a new sheriff in town. i'm going to drive up here and check it out myself. i'll roll through, have some of my staff roll through. look, they've got this. this is hopeful to me. >> reporter: down in l.a., the national guard has been called in to help manage road closures and provide security in evacuation areas including altadena. peoples homes that are still standing or damaged are lucky, but also vulnerable to looting. one bay area family knows that frustration all too well. a couple of homes in the oakland hills were damaged in the keller fire last fall. now one of them is a repeat target for thieves. it's been hit eight times since that fire in

october. da lin spoke to the owners who say they don't know what to do next. >> reporter: 4101 maynard avenue. it is where they raised their children and hosted holiday dinners. until the october 18 kill r fire severely damaged it. >> it is really horrible. it's like they're snatching your heart out all over again. >> reporter: different people broke in to the yellow house eight times to steal anything that was salvageable in november and december. she says they first broke a lock box with keys inside meant for the contractors to gain entry. after that burglary, contractors changed the locks. >> this is one of the ways in which the thieves came if and they just broke the window and literally crawled in and took a whole refrigerator and took it down the street and put it in a vehicle. >> reporter: one of her sons

swept in the car parked in the driveway to prevent burglars. and the burglars came back. >> one person put his hands in his pocket, and then my son was able to back his car out of the area. shortly thereafter, he saw the police, and they were able to flag them down, and then they were able to come and look for the people, but by then, they were long gone. >> reporter: nothing left in the home. most items not damaged by the fire were stolen by thieves. >> this is one of the times they came if and went into our garage. so everything has been taken out of our garage. there is just nothing left here. >> reporter: the oakland police officer association president says officers feel extremely bad about the burglaries. they wish they could do more. but it's been challenging. >> we didn't come to eight hours later. another car, what did they come to, three hours later? i understand the

frustration. it is very difficult for us to provide the need of the community with the small number of officers that we would have. >> reporter: and she supports the first responders as they would experience budget cuts. she has not lost faith on humanity. she's speaking up, so other fire survivors could learn from their experience. >> i'm convinced there are more good people in the world and because of how they showed up after the fire and how they're showing up for those in southern california. well, people inside southern california are grabbing whatever they can to escape the flames, inclauding their beloved pets. >> we want to help and be able to step in and step up. >> if you're wondering, the best way to join shelters to make sure animals in need are safe.

with the fires burning across l.a., so many people have been wondering about the poor animals. a lot of them are hurt in some sad cases. shelters are trying to free up space for them in l.a. they're sending some of them to shelters that have room including the humane society down in ocean side, which took in dogs. spca is also helping deal with the overflow. a part of the problem, the pasadena humane society has taken in more than 350 animals since the fire started. they've been trying to find new shelters for them around the clock. shelters say the best way to help is by adopting or fostering a new pet. first alert weather, powered by kia. learn more at kia.com. kia, movement that inspires. all right, first thing i

want to mention, the winds have died down for a time down in l.a., but the fires are still spreading. >> sure. the vegetation is super dry. any further will spread down quickly, jumping the fire by a mile or two. and it is not going sto last all that long and critical fire condition, which is outlined in orange. the usual suspects above san francisco saying yeah, i need to go, and that's the second highest category. despite that categorization, there are no red flag warnings in effect for southern california at this point with plenty of wind advisories. but right now, they're assessing that the levels will not be low enough for red flag warning. that will be close calls, so plenty or those in the bay

area. it will go into effect of the elevation and right at the top of the hour through 10:00 on sunday. it's also in effect on saturday. the winds won't be nearly as strong as the elevation, so staying below that threshold. it will be an offshore wind, which really eliminates that marine influence that will be eliminated. a little bit of fog will remain and get out of here. strongest gusts on saturday. for most computers here will see a few exception of that. for half moon bay for livermore and antioch. where the models arive to 50 miles an hour. this is strong enough, but it is a far, far cry from

the extremely condition rsv windy conditions. you won't get a repeat of what they had earlier in the week. they don't need a repeat to have a bad scenario shaping up for them into the weekend. another burst of offshore winds are likely there early next week, monday and tuesday. winds tonight as they pick up stirring the atmosphere around, keeping temperatures from dropping too far. everybody will end up in the 40s by early tomorrow morning. we are suppose to have a mix of 30s and 40s this time of the year. normal than jumping off point will allow us to warm up, everybody within five. some of the cooler spots stopping out at 72. that's it. everybody between 5 to 8 degrees above what's normal. very similar numbers across the board on sunday. just without the strong wind in the afternoon. there will be a noticeable breeze, but it won't be quite as blustery. seven-day forecast does show a very gradual return

to closer to normal temperatures by the middle of next week. but there is, that is next friday with temperatures backing down into the 50s with a little more cloud cover. but what you don't see any of it in the whole seven-day forecast is rain. we had a 15-day forecast, which will be rain free. we will keep chants for that next january for rain, but it won't be any time soon. our fire trip will ramp up, but we're doing okay. >> yeah, our surplus is starting to go down at this point. >> thank you so much. a new business in antioch is creating buzz and maybe even raising some eyebrows. reporter anne makovec with an inside look at the talk of the town.

is a good thing. >> reporter: residents say at this point, the city needs to try new ways to put downtown on the map. >> nobody knows about this place. nobody knows about it. people outside the area, they have no idea. and it's along the waterfront. a part of it is make people aware. >> i was definitely thinking it was more susceptible, willing to. and since it was a central east county location. he adds they're coming in from the area. >> it brings in a lot of air from the city where they will come in with the bay area. they're coming to the township. slowly, surely, they are coming out here, checking us out. >> reporter: he hopes that continues, and people will come and see what antioch has to
