deploying more national guards to help fight the fires in l.a. a thousand more will show up. 150,000 residents tonight are still under evacuation orders. palisades fires will remain the largest and most active, burning more than 23,000 acres in a number of homes. businesses, landmarks, and it is currently 11% contained, but the flames will continue to march towards densely populated areas like encino and brentwood. police in the area say two people were arrested near the brentwood home of vice president kamala harris for violating curfew. evacuation orders are still in place. >> our katie nielsen is live in pacific palisades, where many people who evacuated still don't know the fate of their homes. katie? >> reporter: andrea, it's been six days since the start of the fire. for so many people, they

are still outside the evacuation zone. yesterday the sheriff's department was doing escorts into the fire zone for the people who lived up here, but they were so overwhelmed by the number of people who showed up to be escorted inside the evacuation zone, that they had to stop doing that today. but a number of people still came to that roadblock, hoping to get any information about their properties. >> we got here at 4:00, and then they said nobody is allowed today. >> reporter: james tye has been trying since yesterday to get back to the pacific palisades. >> evacuating quickly and certain things have gotten forgotten. however, it looks like the first floor is intact, which they could tolerate to get stuff out. >> reporter: the guys are giving it everything that they have and these are the gut

punches that will become like a loss. this will be a five-alarm fire, where we would have five engines, not dressed a lot different than i am now, trying to do what would be 100 people here, trying to save this building. >> reporter: the division chief and his team tried for almost 12 hours to keep the condo from burning. but the winds were just too much. >> and it was really shocking to see how out of control the whole thing is in our lack or inability to control any of that environment was shocking. i've been doing this for 26 years, and i've never seen anything like it. >> reporter: back in the roadblock, they were trying to get inside the evacuation zone. she was working in the hospital when the fire started. she wasn't able to go back home to

contained, burning more than 1,000 acres near the border of los angeles and ventura counties. officers say they have an arson suspect in custody, and the investigation is ongoing. an investigation is also being opened into the cause of the hurst fire. southern california edison is reporting a down conductor that may have sparked the fire. the fire in the san fernando valley has exceeded 770 acres, now 77% contained. >> the challenge is the winds. we've got these winds coming back this evening, sunday night. we've got peak winds on sunday. and so now we are prepositioning the assets. we are prepositioning them not just here, but in the theater and those existing five plus theaters that will broaden that to a number of other counties, moving farther south with some of the resources in

anticipation with new starts. and of course that critical fire is the weather, so what is up there? two more pulses. first one is coming tomorrow. let's start with the good news. and we've got a beautiful satellite imagery today looking down on southern california. this is the scene at 2:00 in the afternoon with no visible plume coming off the fires. you can see it in the close up view here as well with a zoomed up view. it was far more relaxed today than what it has been, thankfully. that's good news, but only a short-term benefit. this is why they're getting ready for what's coming next. let's go back to the visualization with southern california on the winds. not going to put numbers on. i just want you to watch the colors brighton and get the time span here for the next two pulses. the first one. you've got your purples along the ridges of the san gabriel mountains and the oranges,
5:09 pm
where the palisades fire is. look at the direction. it's going to be blowing everything from the southwest. that's the first pulse. then things will quiet down again. never as good as they were today. they will never turn off like they did for a time today. then watch the second pulse come in. there will be a lot more purple here. you will see the speier light up. now there are deeper colors over the mountains down here. this is when they will start to get to their 40, 50 miles an hour wind gusts up there. that's tuesday morning, and then it will stay like that and that is not only stronger, but also looks like it's going to last longer throughout the duration on tuesday. of course, the visualization as that comes in. watch the dry air surge right there. relative humidities will go down into the teens for a time. they're like in the 30s where we want them. but they're going to dip down into the teens with very dry air as this comes through. just for the perspective, how has the fire behavior changed?
5:10 pm
if we put that on there, there is downtown l.a. that's the eaton fire down there, up above pasadena and altadena. you see the bright oranges there? that will show you the growth today. it did start going back the other way. by that i mean they started to get pushed by the winds. and this is important because this is the latest heat signature. that's the way they want to move the fire with a whole lot of territory out here that has not burned yet. most of it is unpopulated with a long way to run. i'll be back with more weather coming up in a few minutes. back to you. >> thank you, darren. do you feel it? a 3.5 magnitude earthquake hit concord this morning. officially now lands at a 3.5. quake hit between willow pass and clayton roads near sixth street just before 9:00 a.m. basically. it's the pleasant hill area. no damage or injuries were reported with

has the story. >> reporter: after all the tragedy we've seen coming out of los angeles in the last few days, it is time to put aside all the normal rivalries. the people in the bay area are stepping up to help in any way they can think of. with the images coming out of l.a., it did not take long enough for them. and help was going to be needed. westgate church in san jose began a donation drive on thursday. by friday, they had collected enough to fill a semi truck, donated by a local trucking firm to be delivered to a non-profit relief hub called the dream center. >> everybody came together. the community, faith communities, and you know, engaged citizens. the trucking clubs. everybody came together. it's just beautiful when people are willing to be compassionate and empathetic. >> reporter: the same thing was happening in oakland where a korean tofu restaurant became a collection point for more
5:15 pm
relief essentials. that shipment went out on sunday morning thanks to a caravan of volunteers. >> we all have friends and family in affected areas. and what it is like to be in an area affected by wildfires. >> reporter: people are putting whatever talent they have to work to help out. at the hello bagel shop in albany, workers were busy making a special bagel with the proceeds going to an organization called feed the streets l.a. >> running a bagel shop here, we are here all day, every day. i mean there is not much time for anything else. so it like what can we do? and it just felt like a perfect marriage for us because of what we do, understanding of just the importance of a warm meal sometimes. >> anything that you could do to make yourself feel like they would evolve somehow with a misery that is there and relieve it somehow will help

us, you know. and in our sense of being a part of the greater community. >> reporter: and if there is a place where the terror of wildfire will hit home, it's in the north bay. they own a beach themed clothing shop in novato, but lives in santa rosa and remembers what it was like when she would have to evacuate her home in 2017. >> and with explosion after explosion after explosion. i went outside. everybody on the street was already packing. i was like oh my gosh, we need to pack, so we started packing and it is just kind of weird the stuff you would grab. i mean, i was a little up b organized. i would grab my most fanniest dresses, like the stuff i knew i couldn't replace. yet, i didn't have any socks or any underwear. i would have shoes. >> reporter: that's why she started a clothing drive donating a bunch of new inventory and taking contributions from her clients. >> a woman came yesterday, where she brought these nice coats that are brand new. >> reporter: from her
5:17 pm
experience, she knows practical items will be needed, but so will some things to help ease the emotional toll as well. >> trying to just get regular clothing together that i know everybody is going to use and plus i'm donating the stuff that maybe someone had something like that in their closet and this pretty dress, where they're like i feel so pretty in this and all of that is gone. >> reporter: she will still be collecting donations for the next ten days or so, and then rent a trailer to a location near the fire zone. in ways big and small, people are doing what they can to try to help in a situation where a whole lot of people are feeling pretty helpless. >> and there are other ways for you to get involved to help the victims as well. just go to kpix.com/cbs to donate. you can call red cross or text 90999 to red cross, to make a $10 donation. darren? all right, we're going to bring the attention back home

to the weather front. the same pattern that's driving all these intense offshore wind events in southern california, we are feeling it as well. but still, we need to talk about it for us. there is another wind advisory that they have issued. this for tomorrow. and we have done this already. you probably didn't notice a whole lotoses this is the kind of set up here where most of the intensity of the winds will be absorbed to the mountains. you may not feel it too terribly much. but there is one exception to that. i just want to take a moment and drill down to some of the

details tomorrow, specifically for the space shore. so we are going to watch the same forecast now and put it in the monitor, because i could bring you lock step in time, and we can point out two important locations. remember that advisory will start tomorrow morning at 2:00 a.m. take a look at the time here on monday morning. look at oakland. if you look at oakland, specifically along the east bay hills. remember, you need to be about a thousand feet or so and they are just up to the ridge, where they will be feeling them over the crest of the hills. and some of that could translate downhill. so while most of us will not feel a whole lot tomorrow, you're kind of the poster child, but think eaton, down to san leandro and castro valley. you might feel some of the stuff coming off the hills tomorrow for gustier winds there. rest of the pay doesn't really feel much. just keep that in mind tomorrow. we'll get into the afternoon and maybe a gust around 25, 30, and it is
5:20 pm
nothing too strong. let's go back to the map for a second. it will be kind of cold in the morning. this one will bring out a frost advisory for the north bay. you'll be as cold as you have been doing. and they will be going down in the mid-30s for the next three mornings. so it will be chilly and frosty in the mornings for the inland valleys. right around 60 degrees. maybe a little bit below it towards the end of the week, and there is no rain in this forecast, unfortunately. we'll look at the long range possibility for that coming up in the 6:00 hour. back to you. straight ahead in sports, the local basketball team will keep adding signature winds. and the nfl playoffs without the 49
