partisan divide. new developments in that battery storage fire that has been sending toxic smoke into the air in moss lands since yesterday afternoon. this is cbs news bay area with juliette goodrich. >> recalled oakland mayor sheng thao potentially facing prison time after being charged in explosive federal bribery scheme. it is all connected to the raid on her home last year. after months of mystery surrounding the investigation, the feds finally laid out their case. sheng thao was one of four people named in the indictment along with her live in boyfriend andre jones and david and andy dwong. the politically influential father son duo who ran recycling company cal waste solutions. so sheng thao stayed silent as she
7:01 pm
walked into the oakland federal courthouse to turn herself in. she and the other three defendants all entered not guilty pleas. our wilson walker sifted through the indictment and has more on the allegations that date back to before sheng thao took office. >> reporter: a busy day with those charged appearing at a courthouse in oakland and here in san francisco, we finally heard what the fbi was looking for when they went into the home of then mayor sheng thao. >> we are not just up here. i'm not your traditional politician. >> the indictment alleges that the illegal conspiracy began around october 22 before the november 2022 oakland mayor election. weeks before that election, she made commitments to take official actions. as mayor, that would benefit the dwongs. >> reporter: from there, first assistant u.s. attorney patrick robins gave a brief tour of the
7:02 pm
race alleging that sheng thao and her partner andre jones offered up city hall influenced two members of the politically influential duong family. david duong and his son andy. >> promises include her agreement to purchase housing units from a company owned by the duong family. for recycling services the city of oakland had with one of david and andy's companies. and her agreement to use influence to appoint a high level city official to benefit the duongs business interest. >> reporter: in return, prosecutors say the duongs went to work for then mayoral candidate sheng thao. >> the financing of a negative mailer campaign. >> reporter: those mailers targeting two of her opponents were requested by this man,
7:03 pm
mario juarez who was cofounder of a housing company with andy duong and while he is not named in the indictment, our reporting and court documents show that he would be coconspirator one. according to the indictment, following thao's election, coconspirator 1 texted andy to say we may go to jail but we are $100 million richer. to which andy said money buys everything. prosecutors say checks started getting mailed to andre jones. some as large as $35,000. >> providing them as payments disguised as wages for a no show job for jones with the promise of additional payments all intended to benefit both thao and jones. >> reporter: today's indictment and the press conference held by the
7:04 pm
government earlier this morning was successful in grabbing headlines but what it did not do was serve the ends of justice. >> reporter: thao, jones and the duongs appeared in oakland where all four entered not guilty pleas. the former mayor appeared with her attorney who questioned the timing of this action and the indictment itself. >> the indictment itself is chock full of allegations. the case is built on allegations from an unknown coconspirator that we believe will show my client has committed no crimes. >> mentioning the unnamed coconspirator may be a question of where the defense is planning to go. on the issue of identities, we heard from the assistant u.s. attorney here in a very high profile case when we would normally be hearing
7:05 pm
from the u.s. attorney himself. ishmael ramsey has recused himself from this case though it was not announced why he has done so. >> wilson, thank you. a lot to unpack. andy and david duong issued statements denying any wrong doing. some of sheng thao's political opponents took the opportunity to condemn the former mayor. lauren taylor lost to thao in the 2022 mayoral race by less than 700 votes. he was one of the targets of the negative political mailers allegedly sent to boost thao's campaign. taylor said today it is clear the alleged corruption had an impact on the outcome of the election. >> it is about the oakland voters. their choice, their ability to have real representation was stolen. and we have to restore the system and faith and trust and we have
7:06 pm
to start working for oaklanders. >> taylor is running for mayor again in april's special election. meantime, thao faces up to 20 years in prison for some of the most serious charges. she has been released on a $50,000 bond. she surrendered her passport and has been barred from traveling outside the area. we'll certainly continue to follow this case and the latest developments on air, online at kpix.com and on the free cbs news 24/7 app. three days until president-elect trump retakes the white house and today, he announced that the inauguration ceremony will move indoors due to low temperatures in washington dc. he will be taking the oath of office at the capitol rotunda. workers were seen setting up there today. this is only the second time in u.s. history that the ceremony will be held indoors. and it will limit the guest list to a much smaller crowd.
7:07 pm
trump said his supporters will be able to watch the ceremony live at the capitol one arena in dc. he plans to join the crowd after he is sworn in. among those traveling out for the bigger event. jeff burns, the chairman of the contra costa republican party. >> i have a new tuxedo and a new suit. sunday night we have a california legacy ball that we are going to which is a number of california elected republicans. >> so burns proudly showed off a picture with then president trump at a 2019 event in palo alto and he says he is very optimistic for the next four years. but for others, this may be a time of uncertainty. and some anxiety. comes as braver angels, an organization dedicated to bringing democrats and republicans together just to talk. our kenny choi met up with some san francisco participants from both sides of the aisle. >> reporter: leslie lopedo is a
7:08 pm
lifelong democrat bracing herself for what she believe is a trump administration that is dangerous. >> right now i can't say i'm feeling super hopeful about the direction of things. >> reporter: the retired medical doctor want to hear more from conservatives who voted for trump by doubling down her efforts for the braver angels san francisco alliance. debates, and meetings, to bring opposing perspectives closer together. >> somebody will come in and they will say something i never thought of. a perspective that is totally different but makes sense. >> it's an environment where instead of people trying to force me to believe what they want me to believe they have conversations. >> reporter: the long time san francisco resident once considered himself a classical liberal but now calls himself conservative. >> i'm one of the people who
7:09 pm
says i didn't leave the left, the left left me. >> reporter: norris has voted for trump in three consecutive elections. by connecting through the braver angels network, norris and lopedo started having more challenging yet constructive conversations about politically charged topics that they usually don't see eye to eye on. >> that informs how i think. it won't change the side i'm on necessarily. but it will open me to looking at it in a somewhat broader way. and i find that very valuable. >> sometimes, you know, we change our views a little bit about things. >> reporter: those shifts in perspectives are welcomed but it is seeing people shift away from online vitriol and engaging in civil discourse that is driving norris and lopato. >> we are not saying you should change what you believe but to enable you to see the people on
7:10 pm
the opposite side of you as people, as human beings of v value. >> reporter: they are hoping to bring other people to do the same. one chat at a time. >> braver angels says in the seven years since being founded it has expanded to 111 alliances and has more than 58,000 participants. you can watch trump's inauguration right here on cbs news bay area. we have live coverage starting at 6:00 a.m. on monday. coming up, progress tonight in that large battery storage fire that has been causing concerns about toxic air in monterey county. and why it was a bittersweet day for some forced out of their homes by the southern california wild fires. >> temperatures across the bay area running a few degrees cooler than we were at this point yesterday. that was the case throughout the day as the on shore breeze and the marine layer made their return. we'll see how long that sticks around in the first alert fore

all evacuations were lifted about an hour ago in monterey county for the fire at one of the world's largest lithium battery plants. this morning aerials show the fire still burning inside the moss landing facility sending toxic smoke into the air. parts of highway 1 are still shut down tonight. the monterey sheriff says the epa monitored the air quality and confirmed there is no health threat from the smoke. they are still advising people to stay inside out of an abundance of caution. >> we are worried about what will happen in the future. it seems already dangerous this time around. >> lithium batteries which are used for electric vehicles and tools are known to burn very hot and are difficult to
7:15 pm
extinguish so they were letting this fire burn itself out. onto southern california. some evacuation orders were lifted are actually downgraded to warnings today for the palisades fires. it comings as the associated press is reporting that the first evacuation order related to that fire did not come until 40 minutes after homes were already burning and roads were already jammed. so today, we heard from some residents in the brentwood area who were allowed back into their neighborhoods for the first time. >> what are you most looking forward to right now? >> just getting back into my house and feeling what it's like to be home. >> how long have you been out for? >> since the fire, since a week and a day. >> as resident returns, officials from the u.s. geological survey says the threat of landslides and debris will loom for years. fire crews have made significant progress with containment. the palisades fire is now 39% contained while the eaton fire in the altadena

7:17 pm
look at the radar simulation saturday and sunday. the first storm will spread a mixture of snow in the north and rain to the south and make its way further in to the east. this is going to produce some left over lake effect snow showers. you can see that right here. behind that first storm system, there will be a ton of cold air. arctic air that comes crashing in behind it and it will make a huge southward push. temperatures in the 20s , 30s below zero and the freezing air will make its way all the way down to the gulf coast and that sets the stage for storm number two. and this one is going to be weird. interesting. when a meteorologist says interesting you know something odd is about to happen. we are talking about snow in houston, mobile alabama, new orleans. that will not stick around all that long,
7:18 pm
but that is the unusual setup they will be dealing with. and other parts of the country. while we are going to be in just a pretty typical january weather pattern. let's take a look at where things stand now as we look outside from the mark hopkins hotel. temperatures at the moment, dipping down into the 40s and a pretty widespread basis. already down to 49 in san francisco. that number isn't going to fall a whole lot. but most of our temperatures will retreat down to the 40s . the forecast low temperature ins the 30s and 40s by early tomorrow morning. 50s for most inland communities. it is chilly, but within about three degrees of what is normal this time of the year, but on the map by early tomorrow morning we'll have quite a bit of fog.
7:19 pm
the fog that is mainly confined to the coast at the moment will spread out. as we wind the clock forward past midnight, we'll see widespread reduced visibilities to begin the day saturday. it will not take too long for the inland fog to dissipate. the exception is the north bay where it will be a little more stubborn. saturday's highs, a mix of upper 50s and low 60s . temperatures around the bay in the upper 50s to 60. in the coast, low to mid 50s , where the fog dissipates faster. san jose will be one of the warm spots at 63 degrees by tomorrow afternoon. in terms of any rain chances, well, there aren't any. any time soon. so air quality will be a concern in the moderate category. rain chances are going to try to increase a little bit at the end of next week as we hit that last weekend in january. but we are talking about a modest
7:20 pm
little increase to the 20% range. we are looking at the next rain chance that will eventually head our way. it is just not going to be any time soon. at the coast, your temperatures will be on the cool side. then you are back with everybody else from martin youther king day through the abbreviated following workweek. temperatures for bay side, inland communities in the upper 50s and low 6 50s. mostly into the low to mid 60s as we head through next week. >> paul, thank you. coming up, the man who kidnapped denise huskins was
