goodrich. the party is still going on in washington, d.c. tonight to celebrate the return of donald trump to the white house, who has already taken some swift action to carry out some of his campaign promises. so trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the united states at 9:01 our time. he was surrounded by his wife, melania, along with his children. the ceremony was held at the capitol rotunda. because of frigid temperatures only the second time in u.s. history it's been moved indoors. so the guest list included some of his top supporters, and that includes a who's who of silicon valley's biggest names including mark zuckerberg, tim cook, and google's sundar pichai. so some of his other supporters who made the journey to d.c. were able to watch the inauguration at capital one arena. the president made a stop later there, where he got right to work. >> the next item is a freeze on all federal hiring excepting the military and a number of

>> we expect i.c.e. raids in major cities -- >> i don't want to say when. but it's going to happen. has to happen. or we're not going to have a country left. >> so here in the bay area the threat of federal action is creating fear in some communities, especially for immigrant families with mixed status. our len ramirez was in san jose with how leaders are promising to stand up to this new administration. >> reporter: immigrants and their supporters gathered on inauguration day for a show of solidarity. but they're afraid of what the incoming trump administration could do to their friends and family and are speaking out. one of the voices belongs to community organizer and elementary school volunteer maria chavez, a mother of four who could be deported and separated from her u.s.- born children. undocumented immigrants. so bay area republicans are certainly celebrating president trump's return to the white house. some of his supporters were at the el cortola overpass. that's above highway 24 in lafayette. and for years that has become a place for them to gather and display trump flags and their slogans. lisa disbrow is with the maga patriots of contra costa. she says she has organized about 70 trump events on this overpass. >> they're expressing their true feelings versus being suppressed. in the bay area people who are not radicals are suppressed and demonized. these people can honk from their cars and their neighbors don't know. >> across the bay area the san francisco gop held a watch party at harry's bar on fillmore street. 7% of registered voters are republican in the city. so stayed the country got a better idea of what trump will focus on but at what pace can he really get things done?

political analyst dr. caroline heldman joining us live to delve into today's inauguration. you are here on election night. here we are inauguration day. what are your thoughts on how things were laid out? can he move as swiftly as he wants with these executive orders? >> well, for some he can. if you look at what the power of the executive branch is, it is to interpret and implement plauz. i will say, though, his tiktok ban, he's now negotiated an executive order for a 75- day delay. it's unclear whether he can do that because congress passed a law, for example, and the supreme court upheld it and an executive order would not override that. so trump is really pushing the envelope. he's already kind of thrown us into a little constitutional crisis. also some of his orders will go in immediately. that would be the revocation of d.e.i. programs and all of the federal agencies. he overturned a ban on choke holds and no- knock warrants on dr. martin luther king jr. day. right? which is a clear nod to
7:07 pm
george floyd and breonna taylor. he also appears to be reinstituting a muslim ban. so some of these, yes, he has the power to immediately enforce. >> a tall order. so what challenges might he face, though? >> i think the challenges he will face is we're already seeing it. a number of lawsuits. whether or not the courts will back up folks who are pushing against the environmental regulations and immigration, i would say pretty draconian immigration response for a country of immigrants. but for example, he just released all of the january 6th rioters, people who abused police officers, fingers removed, broken ribs. some really serious violent offenses here. and he can just do that with the stroke of a pen. i think he'll also maybe face some pushback from his own party from members who want their 15 seconds and maybe want to oppose him in order to get a platform as we've seen so many times in recent years with extremist republicans. >> so trump is planning to visit southern california the

end of the week. he's going to likely meet with governor gavin newsom as he tours the fire zones. i'm curious your thoughts. what does that meeting look like? especially with all the rhetoric that he's had toward governor gavin newsom. >> for anyone who heard his speech this morning, his first of three speeches, he really kind of gave us a gut punch in southern california saying that we haven't moved or done anything with the palisades and the eaton fire and the other fires in the l.a. area. i think he will get a chilly reception from anyone who's lived through these fires or wasn't lucky -- i mean, it's just such a catastrophe. and to say the firefighters and other emergency response haven't responded is really an insult. i imagine that newsom will be diplomatic and be professional but not really sure -- donald trump -- it's obvious he's going to weaponize fema and withhold funds, which sets a terrible precedent. unclear whether he'll get a chilly reception. he'll certainly get one from
