raging inferno. a new wildfire breaks out near an already battered los angeles forcing tens of thousands from their homes. immigration crackdown. 1,500 soldiers and marines heading to the border as the justice department threatens any state and local official standing in the way of the government's actions. and digging out. the rare winter storm that buried much of the south under record-breaking snow. now the cleanup begins. good morning. i'm michael george. we start with the new wildfire burning out of control in southern california. more than 50,000 people are under evacuation orders or warnings. the flames spread fast, charring about 15 square miles within six hours. but fire officials say a rapid ground and air assault is giving them the upper hand. the hughes fire is burning near castaic lake, a popular recreation area about 40 miles

from the devastating eaton and palisades fires that are still burning for a third week. cbs' jonathan vigliotti reports from the fire zone. >> reporter: crews now are scrambling to contain these flames. they're trying to prevent this fire from jumping over the fire line. we have seen the wind really push this fire as it exploded in just a matter of hours to more than 5,000 acres, sending so many people under mandatory evacuation orders, scrambling to safety. >> get out -- >> reporter: all around us here is wild land. we saw from the air an enormous plume of smoke and flames, and the fire just exploding. despite hundreds of firefighters on the ground and an arsenal of planes dropping massive amounts of water and retardant, embers pushed by 30 mile-per-hour winds are still igniting trees and thick brush. this grew from a small vegetation fire to more than 5,000 acres in just two hours. we're close to interstate 5, a

major link between l.a. and the san francisco bay area, which has went closed. dangerous wind conditions. then we'll have weather whiplash. rain is in the forecast for the weekend, but with it comes the threat of mudslides. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news, los angeles. and president trump is threatening to withhold disaster aid for los angeles unless california leaders change how they manage the state's water. meanwhile the first legal challenge to trump's executive action on birthright citizenship is being heard today in a seattle court. it comes as the president ramps up his crackdown on immigration, sending 1,500 troops and possibly more to seal off the southern border. the trump administration also canceled travel for refugees already approved to resettle in the u.s. and is threatening to prosecute local law enforcement officials who don't enforce his new immigration policies. cbs' naomi ruchim joins us with the latest.

you know, the president is not just cracking down on undocumented immigrants but also legal asylum seekers. >> right. good morning. and the president himself has said and it seems he plans to shut down quickly the american asylum system, and in some cases is do that without going congress. now two customs and border protection officials tell cbs news that migrants will not even be allowed to see a judge or asylum officer before being forced out. it has many families on edge over fear of separation and danger back home. there are new details on president trump's efforts to crack down on illegal immigration. 1,500 u.s. troops are heading to the southern border. a number that could explode to as many as 10,000, according to an internal memo obtained by cbs news. internal documents also direct border agents to immediately deport migrants who cross into the country illegally, without allowing them to request asylum.

and they instruct the justice department to investigate any instances of local and state officials obstructing trump's enforcement policies. on fox news, the president railed against illegal immigration and sanctuary cities. >> we're trying to end them, and a lot of people in those communities don't want them. this was a gross miscarriage of common sense to allow people to come in. >> reporter: dozens of communities around the u.s. are now fearful of ramped up immigration raids. >> what's going to happen tomorrow when i wake up and take my kid to school? like am i going to meet them, i.c.e. there? >> reporter: also last night president trump suggested getting rid of fema, even as yet another dangerous wildfire threatens southern california. >> i'd rather see the state take care of their own problems. >> reporter: the push to bring federal employees back to the office full time is ramping up. agencies now have until the end of the week to update their

in-person work policies. meantime, the house has now passed an immigration bill that requires the detainment of immigrants accused of theft and violent crimes. it's called the laken riley act after the georgia nursing student who was murdered last year by an immigrant who came to the u.s. illegally from venezuela. this would be the first legislation signed by president donald trump during his second term, michael. and of course it's about immigration, something he campaigned on. >> thank you very much for joining us. and more fallout following president trump's mass pardons of more than 1,500 people charged with crimes in the january 6th capitol riot. after a day after he was released the leader of the oath keepers visited capitol hill to meet with house republicans. stewart rhodes was convicted of seditious conspiracy and sentenced to 18 years. yesterday during an emotional news conference in the capitol, two of the police officers who

fought the rioters said they were angry about trump's pardons. >> the republican party has longs claimed to be the party of law and order. back the blue. however, many lawmakers silenced, and refusal to push back against donald trump's actions make it hard to take the claim serious. >> federal judges dismissing cases against the january 6th rioters took the opportunity to give their reaction to trump's pardons in their written orders. some saying the pardons won't climate change the truth about what happened. former new york city mayor michael bloomberg is stepping up after president trump said the u.s. would withdraw from the paris climate agreement. bloomberg, who's also a u.n. special envoy on climate change, says he and other funders would cover the country's financial obligations to the u.n. climate framework. he also said they'd ensure the u.s. meets its emissions reporting obligations despite trump's withdrawal. we turn to the historically

cold and snowy weather across the deep south. a half dozen states from louisiana to the carolinas remain under states of emergency. at least nine people have died from exposure to the cold or on icy roads. cbs' kati weis has the remarkable wintry scenes from areas best known for palm trees and sandy beaches. >> reporter: from above, new orleans is as pretty as a picture. ♪ >> beautiful. >> beautiful. gorgeous. >> reporter: but on the ground, the big easy's record ten inches of snow and freezing temperatures have turned roads and bridges into an icy mess. >> we're going to continue just

fighting this as best we can. as far as temperatures rising and mother nature starts doing this work for us. >> reporter: it's slow going on snow-covered streets, but the dig-out is under way with the city paying a company from indiana to use 14 of their snowplows with more on the way. what's it been like shoveling all this snow? >> it's hard. it's hard. >> reporter: this gas station manager, sabri ijaq, is improvising. breaking out his power tools and wrapping his shoes in plastic to keep his feet dry. looks like you have a lot of folks here helping you, though. has it been a group effort? >> from the community, even joined in and tried to help. >> reporter: from texas to florida, the south is snowed in, and the situation is dangerous. at least nine people are dead from storm-related traffic accidents and cold exposure. more than 130,000 homes and businesses were without power across five states at the peak of the storm. the weather has also snarled air travel nationwide. more than 1,800 flights were canceled, and thousands were delayed. at least eight major airports are still closed. and back in the big easy, travel is anything but. with major interstates like i-10

breaking overnight, seven san antonio police officers were shot while responding to a call for a possible suicide attempt. police say the officers were shot one after the other as they responded to the scene. their injuries are said to be nonlife threatening. police say the suspect was down to dead after barricading himself in an apartment for several hours. it's not clear if he killed himself or if he was shot by officers. new details about a deadly school shooting. that tops the headlines on the "morning newsstand". henderson confronted 16-year-old josselin corea escalante in the antioch high school cafeteria yesterday and opened fire killing her. another student was grazed by a bullet before the shooter killed himself. >> it was a lot of screaming, lot of tears. people were screaming, they were scared to die. >> there were two school resource officers in the building when the shooting happened, but by the time they got there, it was already over. police are going through the shooter's online writings and social media posts as they look for a motive. "san francisco gate" reports a california couple is suing jetblue after a block of ice the size of a watermelon allegedly fell on their home. the couple claims the ice from a

new york-to-los angeles flight crashed through their roof and landed, quote, directly above their pillows in the bedroom. and the couple is suing for negligence and trespassing. they said they did not grant jetblue permission to allow the ice to enter their home. jetblue says it doesn't comment on ongoing litigation. and the bbc says a law legalizing same-sex marriage went into effect in thailand. hundreds of couples across the country registered their marriages on the first day of the new law. it changes the wording in marriage law from men and women and husband and wife to individuals and marriage partners. it's supposed to give lgbtq-plus couples equal access to full legal, financial, and medical rights. thailand is the first country in southeast asia to legalize same-sex marriage. coming up, hollywood sweethearts reunite. why the stars of "when harry met sally" got together again. native americans names.
