this is "cbs news mornings." visit to the disaster zones. president trump embarking on the first trip of his second term with stops in hurricane-battered north carolina and wildfire-ravaged los angeles. bracing for mudslides. as new wildfires erupt, new concern as southern california prepares for its first rainfall in months. and a shocker in australia. 24-time grand slam champion novak djokovic unable to finish his semifinal match. good morning. i'm michael george. president trump wraps up his first week in office with a trip outside of washington, d.c. while he's away, pete hegseth, his pick to lead the military, is expected to face a final confirmation vote in the senate today without the support of two key republicans. and the president is vowing to push back after a federal judge blocked his controversial executive order banning birthright citizenship.

also, immigration arrests have apparently started. the mayor of newark, new jersey, says agents raided a local business and detained several people including a veteran. cbs' naomi ruchim joins us now. good morning. let's start with the president's visit to california and a threat he's making to cut wildfire aid. >> reporter: good morning. ahead of president trump's visit to southern california today, he threatened to potentially withhold federal funding after blasting the state's water management and its democratic governor. it's just the latest instance of partisan riling only one week into the term. today president donald trump heads to hurricane-ravaged communities in north carolina. then to los angeles where destructive wildfires continue to burn. >> the senate will come to order. >> reporter: in washington, a final senate vote could come as soon as today on former fox news host pete hegseth's nomination

for defense secretary. hegseth cleared yesterday's procedural vote in the senate, despite opposition from all of the democrats and two republicans. maine's susan collins and alaska's lisa murkowski. >> no surprises there. too bad. >> reporter: meanwhile, cbs news has obtained internal documents showing that the trump administration is in the process of shutting down immigration offices set up by the biden administration in multiple latin american countries. while the department of homeland security is authorizing other federal law enforcement agencies like the dea and atf to assist in immigration enforcement efforts. >> they have deployed active duty u.s. military and national guard troops to the border to assist in repelling the invasion. >> reporter: but in a blow to the new president's controversial plan, a federal judge temporarily blocked trump's order ending birthright

citizenship for the children of undocumented migrants and temporary visa holders. the president says he will appeal. meantime, the fbi says it's identifying record related to the assassinations of former president john f. kennedy, robert f. kennedy, and martin luther king jr. it comes after president trump signed an executive order directing the release of those documents. he claims it's a move to restore transparency in washington. michael? >> naomi ruchim in new york. thanks. turning now to southern california where strong winds and dry conditions are fueling new wildfires. firefighters are making progress against the 10,000-acre hughes fire north of los angeles. and rain is finally in the forecast for the weekend, but that brings a whole new level of concern. cbs' jonathan vigliotti reports from the fire zone. >> reporter: in fire-weary southern california, another

wildfire broke out in ventura downtown l.a. near farms and a college campus. while another fire racing up a hillside near the exclusive community of bel air, threatening homes before crews gained the upper hand. the bigger concern -- this fire near castaic still burning through dry brush. residents already on edge from weeks of warnings had to scramble to safety. adanya perez was among the 30,000 newest evacuees. >> my brother lost his home in the altadena fire. now i'm like, oh, my god. now it's my turn. >> reporter: while residents here got prompt evacuation warnings, for thousands in altadena early on the morning of january 8th at the height of the devastating eaton fire -- >> i woke up on pure vibes. >> reporter: florence kerns-wilson is among many dmanding answers. there was no official warning, no official order issued?

it was just go, go, go for you at 4:00 a.m.? >> yeah, and it was just like neighbors taking care of each other because no one else would tell us what to do. >> reporter: all 17 who died in the fire were residents of west altadena where evacuation warnings came too late or not at all. >> there are a lot of other people that were not safe. and they could have been. >> reporter: residents are bracing for rain and the threat of mudslides. that threat, though, is this weekend. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news, los angeles. now to the middle east where hamas is expected to release the names of the four hostages it will free saturday. it's expected to be four women, including civilians and soldiers. there are seven female hostages remaining on the list of 33 captives to be released in the first stage. three israeli women were freed sunday in exchange for 90 palestinian prisoners on the first day of the cease-fire. and back here at home,

president trump's proposed tariffs will impact the cost of many products including cars. the average price of a new car is nearly $50,000. and as cbs' kelly o'grady reports, the sticker shock could get worse. >> reporter: how many of these cars are we going to see an increase on? >> that one, that one -- every single car. >> reporter: tom maoli is the owner of a new and used car dealership in new jersey. with president trump threatening 25% tariffs on mexico and canada, he says drivers could see a big price jump. how much of an increase could a consumer see? >> i think it's going to be a minimum of five, it could be up to 15%. >> reporter: used car will also spike because there will be more demand. tariffs on mexico and canada will cause an increase as some of the biggest car brand including ford, gm, and stellantis have plants in these two neighboring countries. and even cars assembled in the u.s. may see an increase. according to maoli, more than

half of parts like batteries and motor components, are sourced elsewhere and could get slapped with a tariff, especially with the president also proposing a 10% tariff on china. >> i think the manufacturer has no choice but to pass that along to the consumer because they need to drive profits. >> reporter: how quickly does that get passed on to the consumer? >> anything that has not been shipped yet or is at the dock that's getting shipped into these ports that's going into a vehicle to be manufactured, it's immediate. >> reporter: that's not all. repair parts and costs could go up, too. how is this going to impact parts that are coming from a place like china? >> brake pads come from china, some from mexico. these brake pads could go up as much as 20% which ultimately impact the cost of -- to the consumer when they do that. >> reporter: even if i'm someone that says i'm not going to buy a new car, i'm going to stay with my current car. i'm going to have to pay 20, 25% more? >> if you're not buying, you're

update on the gunman in a texas shooting. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "san antonio express-news" says the man who shot and wounded seven san antonio police officers was a navy veteran. [ gunfire ] scary video. the officers were shot wednesday as they responded to an initial report of a suicide in progress. the shooter, brandon poulos, was later found dead after barricading himself in an apartment for several hours. police say he was arrested last weekend for allegedly assaulting his wife and her parents. the officers are expected to fully recover. "the tennesseean" says the student who opened fire wednesday at a nashville high school fired ten shots in 17 seconds. authorities say solomon henderson killed 16-year-old josselin corea escalante and wounded another student before killing himself. investigators say they found racist, far right, and anti-semitic documents on line

well, the national zoo's newest residents, giant pandas bao li and qing bao, are making their public debut this morning. the two pandas have been acclimating to their new habitat since arriving from china in october. and a stunner this morning at the australian open. novak djokovic pulled out of his semifinal match against alexander zverev due to an injury. moments after losing a tie breaker, he conceded the match. some fans booed him. djokovic hurt his leg during a quarterfinal match against carlos alcaraz. he was going after a record 25th grand slam title. walmart is paying big bucks, and there's a big settlement in the opioid crisis. here's shanelle kaul with today's cbs "moneywatch." >> reporter: another winning day on wall street with the s&p 500 notching a new record. the dow gained 408 points.

the nasdaq was up 44, and the s&p 500 gained 32 points. the sackler family and purdue pharma, the maker of the powerful painkiller oxycontin, have agreed to pay $7.4 billion to settle lawsuits with 15 states for fueling the opioid crisis. the settlement bars the sackler family from selling opioids in the u.s. and ends its control of purdue. this deal replaces a previous settlement the u.s. supreme court rejected last year. this one will need court approval. as companies across the country including walmart, mcdonald's, and amazon are scaling back their dei initiatives, costco is staying the course. shareholders overwhelmingly rejected a proposal thursday urging the wholesale club operator to evaluate any risks posed by dei programs. and walmart is boosting pay for regional store managers. top performers will now be able

"emilia perez" leads this year's oscar nominations with 13 including nods for best picture and best actress for karla sofia gascon. the first openly trans actor ever nominated. ♪ >> reporter: "wicked" was also popular with academy voters nabbing ten nominations including for best picture and for stars cynthia erivo and ariana grande. the epic drama "the brutalist" captured ten nods including best picture and three for acting. rounding out the best picture category, the comedy drama "anora," biopic, "a complete unknown," "conclave," "i'm still here," "nickel boys," and "the substance."
