2025. this is cbs news mornings. war of words. president trump and his colombian counterpart both threatening tariffs in a showdown over deporting migrants. dispute settled. israel allows palestinians to return to northern gaza after hamas agrees to release a civilian hostage. and super bowl rematch. the kansas city chiefs are back to try for a historic three-peat as they face the philadelphia eagles. ♪ ♪ good morning. i'm michael george. president trump is claiming victory this morning after a public spat with colombia's president over migrant deportations. colombia refused to let two u.s. military planes carrying migrants land, prompting trump to threaten tariffs. colombia's president then fired back with the same threats. it comes as federal agents descended on chicago sunday, rounding up people they claim are undocumented immigrants.

nearly 1,000 arrests were made since thursday to nearly 2,400. cbs's jarred hill joins us with the latest. jarred, president trump seems all too willing to use the threat of tariffs against some of our trade partners. >> yeah, michael. we know immigration is a huge priority for the trump administration here, and colombia has traditionally been one of the u.s.'s top allies in south america. now there's work to repair that relationship after this whip latch-inducing battle on social media. meanwhile, trump and republicans are meeting to talk about other priorities. >> reporter: president donald trump back in florida for first time since moving back into the white house. he is preparng to host republican house members for meetings at his doral resort today. the focus, domestic policy as an international showdown seems to have cooled. overnight the white house said the u.s. and colombia reached a trade war-ending agreement over

deportations. over the weekend, colombia's president gustavo pedro refused to accept them. trump threatened a 25% tariff. pedro originally stood his ground, announcing his own tariffs on goods. last night the white house said the colombian gornt agreed to trump's terms including the unrestricted acceptance of undocumented migrants to the u.s. without delay. this as the trump administration ramps up arrests worldwide. jd vance on "face the nation" defended the actions. allowing for arrests in churches and school. >> i desperately hope it has a chilling effect on illegal immigrant it coming into our

country. >> reporter: according to i.c.e. hundreds of immigrants have been arrested over the past few days including nearly 1,000 on sunday alone. a colombian delegation is set to travel to washington for follow up meetings this week. meanwhile, vice president vance was pressed on "face the nation" about lowering the price of groceries but he acknowledged it will take a bit of time. michael. >> jarred, thanks so much. legal challenges are expected after president trump fired more than a does independent inspectors general whose job is to investigate misconduct in federal government. trump said they will be replaced by, quote, good people. federal law requires congress to receive a 30-day notice and details about the removal of an inspector general. republican senator chuck grassley demanded further explanation from trump. the fragile cease-fire between israel and hamas is holding for now after both sides reached an agreement to release

a civilian israeli hostage who was supposed to be freed saturday. under the new deal israel started to allow palestinians to return to northern gaza this morning. it was supposed to start saturday but israel put it on hold, accusing hamas of violating the terms of the cease-fire. thousands of palestinians have been waiting there for days to go home. the israeli prime minister's office says hamas will now hand over that civilian hospital tan arbel yehud along with agam berger along with an unidentified male hostage on thursday, in addition to three others to be released on saturday. we are learning new details about the four hostages released over the weekend and their time in captivity. israeli media reports one was held alone in a tunnel for a long time. they survived on one pita bread a day and were forced to clean and cook for the terrorists and their families. president trump meanwhile suggested most of gaza's population will be at least temporarily resettled in other arab countries.

is an insult to victims of naziism and a danger to the democratic future of germany. it all comes after musk's controversial gesture last week many compared to a nazi salute. today is international holocaust remembrance day and events are held marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of auschwitz. a new research center devoted to fighting extremism opened in the house of the former commander of the nazi concentration and extermination camp in poland. the house is located next to the site which is now a museum. 6 million yous were killed during the holocaust, about 1 million of them at auschwitz. southern california is getting some desperately needed rain after weeks of wildfires but it is starting to cause mudslides and there's concern there will be more. flood watches are in effect in some areas devastated by the wildfires. several roads were closed after vehicles became stuck in mudslides. bulldozers were called in to

help remove the mud. downpours on charred hillside could bring toxic ash run-off from cars, buildings, batteries and other items destroyed in the fires. crews have been shoring up slopes, removing vegetation and reinforcing roads ahead of the an anticipated mudslide. inflation combined with a nationwide shortage of eggs due to bird flu is expected to drive prices higher. more than 30 million chickens have been killed in the last hree months alone to pr the spread of the disease. egg prices are about 37% higher than last year. well, the kansas city chiefs are headed to the super bowl for the third year in a row and a possible date with history. the chiefs defeated the buffalo bills last night in the afc championship game, 32-29. quarterback patrick mahomes threw for a touchdown and ran

skier's watch last week after he fell 1,000 feet off a mountain. when rescuers arrived they also found another skier who was hurt and unable to walk. the skiers were hoisted on to a helicopter by rescuers. an air force training video of the tuskegee airmen will be restored and a bumpy takeoff for a passenger plane. "usa today" says 38 people were hurt when a united airlines flight from nigeria to washington, d.c. experienced what is being called unexpected aircraft movement. the boeing 787 carrying more than 250 people was forced to return to lagos last friday where it landed safely. four passengers and two flight attendants were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. nigerian officials say 32 people suffered minor injuries. video on social media shows what it was like on board the plane. al.com reports new defense secretary pete hegseth said the

matt pieper has that and more in today's "money watch." stocks edged back from their all-time high as they closed out a second straight winning week. though the numbers were not great friday, the dow lost 140, the nasdaq down 99, the subpoena losing 17 points. what is next for tiktok? well, the company perplexity ai has presented a new proposal to tiktok's parent company. it would allow the u.s. government to own up to 50% of it. perplexity ai is an artificial intelligence search engine start up competing with openai and google. bytedance, which owns tiktok, has not responded to an earlier proposal from the ai company. tax filing season is here. today is the day with the irs accepts tax returns. if you file electronically and your return is accurate and complete, the irs says it should take fewer than three weeks to receive a refund. the deadline to file is april 15th. today is national chocolate
