reshaping the military. president trump orders changes that put an end to diversity programs and takes the first steps to bans transgender troops from serving. the ai race. a chinese startup jolts the tech industry with a new artificial intelligence app sending shock waves through washington and wall street. and new video. is this the spark that ignited the deadly eaton wildfire outside los angeles? the new accusations. ♪ ♪ good morning. i'm michael george. well, it is hard to keep up with the dizzying pace of orders and actions coming out of the trump white house. let's break it down for you. the white house budget office ordered a temporary pause on all grants, loans and federal financial assistance. also, the acting attorney general fired more than a dozen prosecutors who worked with special counsel jack smith on the two federal prosecutions of donald trump. and the president signed four

executive orders you focused on the military including eliminating diversity programs and setting in motion a future ban on transgender troops. cbs's jarred hill joins us with the latest. these are all things president trump promised to do but critics say he is overstepping his power as president. >> reporter: we have seen legal challenges to some of these but president trump is standing firm, from the executive orders rolling back by versity initiatives to freezing grant mondie. he is continuing his fast and wide-ranging overhaul of the federal government and american culture. new this morning, a freeze on nearly all federal financial assistance just hours away. sources tell cbs news an interns memo from the white house calls for a pause on grants and loans, reviewed to ensure they align with trump administration priorities. the senate democrat chuck schumer wrote it is jeopardizing

billions upon billions of community support that help those across the country. he signed a slew affecting the military, reinstating thousands discharged for refusing the covid-19 vaccine. in the meantime, reinstating a ban ordered in 2017 in banning race and sex-based preferences. trump speaking in florida. >> we will stop our members from being indoctrinated. >> reporter: another order calls for the creation of a u.s. iron dome similar to israel's iron dome. >> we protect other countries but not ourselves. >> he claimed victory in the thwarted trade war with colombia after they agreed to accept deportation flights. >> american is respected again. >> reporter: hundreds of undocumented migrants have been arrested over the past few days. >> there's a lot of anxiety and

clif living this uncertainty. >> reporter: the white house closed the door to hundreds of asylum seekers hoping to come into the u.s. legally. a note here that covid vaccine mandate was rescinded in early 2023. about 8,000 or so service members there were kicked out of the military because of this. only about 110 came back once that was lifted. michael, also that order pausing federal aid is set to go into effect at 5:00 p.m. easte. the question will be what types of programs will be impacted. >> a lot to keep track of. jarred hill, thanks. turning now to wall street where tech stocks took a big hit yesterday due to a chinese-owned startup called deepseek and its new ai chatbot. the company has created an artificial intelligence model in much less time and for much less money than u.s. companies. its ai assistant was apple's most downloaded free app yesterday. tech darling nvidia which makes chips that power ai lost nearly $600 billion in market value. that's the biggest one-day loss

by a company ever. >> i actually think it is a good reality check because if anyone could come near what deepseek has done in terms of the cheaper basically training models, that's going to increase ai use cases. it is going to increase computing power, and that's actually a positive for u.s. tech. >> president trump called deepseek's breakthrough a wake-up call for american companies to be laser focused on competing to win. newly released surveillance video could shed new light on what sparked the devastating eaton fire outside los angeles. attorneys for a homeowner whose house was destroyed are suing southern california edison for allegedly causing the fire. they say video from a gas station january 7th shows electrical arcing and sparks on a transmission tower falling on to a dry hillside. minutes later the hillside began to burn. the eaton fire has destroyed more than 9,000 structures and killed at least 17 people.

southern california edison says there's no evidence its equipment started the fire. well, there are increasing concerns about bird flu in the u.s. a rare strain of the virus has been detected on a duck farm about 100 miles of san jose, california. it is the first confirmed case of that particular strain in the country. a more common strain of bird flu was also detected at the same farm. it comes as the trump administration has told federal health agencies to stop most communications with the public through at least the end of this month. now to the middle east where the families of hostages are forced to endure more psychological warfare. the palestinian islamic jihad terror group released a propaganda video of civilian hostage arbel yehud who is due to be released on thursday. the family asked the media not to broadcast any images from the clip, but in the video she reassures her family she is okay and hopes to return home soon like the other girls.

as for the 25 other hostages expected to be released in the first phase of the cease-fire, hamas has told israel eight of them are dead, but they didn't specify who is alive and who isn't. as the world waits to learn the 5/8 of the bibas family and their two young boys. hundreds of thousands of palestinians returned to their homes, or what is left of them, in northern gaza for the first time yesterday. as cbs's elizabeth palmer reports, hamas is taking advantage of the cease-fire to regroup and recruit. >> reporter: israel's assault on gaza killed thousands of hamas fighters but it also created a whole generation of new ones. >> translator: i have nothing left. today i'm prepared to join hamas and not just be one of them, but be one of the best. >> reporter: he asked that we call him rami. he is 22, and told us an israeli airstrike killed both of his parents and two siblings and that he has never held a gun in

his life. >> translator: i worked at the restaurant. my ambition was to be a talente. but then the war came and it wiped out everything. >> reporter: hamas terrorists started the war on october 7th, 2023 when they attacked israel and murdered more than 1,000 people. but 15 months of relentless israeli bombing hasn't wiped them out. their handover last saturday of four israeli hostages was a spectacle to project power and draw new recruits. >> translator: joining hamas is revenge for what i went through, for no reason and for no crime i committed. >> reporter: israel ziv is a retired general with the israeli defense forces. >> they can recruit thousands of people. it is not even a question, and

guilty to a misdemeanor charge in the u.s. capitol on january 6th. maine is hit by an earthquake and a deadly sh supermarket shooting. the associated press says three people were killed including the suspect in a shooting at an indiana grocery store. police say they received a 911 call about a shooting in elk heart yesterday. the officers engaged the suspect outside the store. they were wounded and the suspect was killed. one of the officers is in stable condition, the other was released from a hospital. "newsday" reports prosecutors are accusing a former new york state trooper of shooting himself in the leg, then societying off a wild goose chase for a nonexistent shooter. thomas ma see awe was arrested on several charges including falsely reporting an incident. prosecutors say macia claims he was shot by a driver on a highway last year and planted shell casings at the scene in a bit to gain attention and
