undocumented immigrants came to new york city. the secretary of homeland security, kristi noem, went along as federal agents conducted a raid in the bronx. i.c.e. says 969 arrests were made nationwide yesterday. cbs' jarred hill has the latest. now the white house has invited cameras along on these raids so there's no question they want americans to see this. >> yeah. the record button is on with this. in fact, a couple of days ago we saw them having a tv host, dr. phil, tagging along on one i.c.e. raid, essentially interviewing detainees cuffed on the street. meanwhile, president trump is pushing forward with the overhaul of the federal government, spending that raises some legal questions. his aides and advisers argue the president can paint with a broad programs and workers, including this new effort to clean house. this morning, the nation's nearly two million civilian federal workers are faced with a new question -- stay or go? in an email monday president

trump's administration offered buyouts to employees who don't want to return to the office full time. workers who decide to leave by february 6th can keep all pay and benefits through the end of september. the move part of elon musk's department of efficiency's efforts to slash payroll and build a work force loyal to trump's priorities. >> the american people voted for dramatic change implemented by donald trump. so it is essential for him to get control of government. >> reporter: democratic senator tim kaine of virginia home to thousands of federal workers is urging them to turn it down. >> he doesn't have any authority to do this. do not be fooled by this guy. >> reporter: for now, a federal judge has put the trump administration's confusing temporary freeze on most federal assistance on hold at least until monday afternoon. >> president trump is looking out for you by issuing this pause because he is being a good steward of your turnpike dollars. >> reporter: organizations like meals on wheels were left scrambling. >> for seniors that uncertainty is worrying.

they depend on that food, on that social contact. >> reporter: the white house now says that program will not be impacted. cbs news has also learned that today president trump is expected to sign an executive order freeing up federal funding for school choice. meanwhile, as president trump moves unilaterally, house speaker mike johnson is acknowledging that they may need democratic to pass the debt ceiling giving dems leverage to stall trump's agenda. >> thanks. also today, the senate holds confirmation hearings on president trump's nominee for health secretary, robert f. kennedy jr. yesterday in a letter to senators that she also read on camera, his cousin, caroline kennedy, urged them to reject the nomination calling him a predator who's addicted to attention and power. she also said his anti-vax views are disqualifying. >> bobby preys on the desperation of parents of sick children.

vaccinating his own kids while building a following hypocritically discouraging other parents from vaccinating theirs. >> your cousin -- >> the letter is the latest criticism of robert f. kennedy jr. from his own family. several family members denounced his bid to be president last year. breaking overnight, a u.s. air force pilot is safe after an f-35 fighter jet crashed during a training exercise at a base in alaska. authorities say the pilot experienced an in-flight malfunction but was able to eject from the aircraft before it plunged to the ground and burst into flames. the pilot declared an emergency before the crash. health officials are calling a year-long tuberculosis outbreak in kansas a stark warning. the outbreak in the kansas city area has killed two people since it started in january of last year. as of last week, 67 people are being treated for active tb. >> unique in this is just the

sheer number of this outbreak of cases that has been reported on and also reported on back in august, as well. >> tb is caused by bacteria living in lungs and spread through the air when people talk, cough, or sing. it's very infectious but only spreads when someone has symptoms. the cdc says there's been two larger outbreaks in the u.s. in recent history. and the white house is offering up an explanation for those mysterious drones spotted over the eastern u.s. last month. >> the drones that were flying over new jersey in large numbers were authorized to be flown by the faa for research and various other reasons. many of these drones were also hobbyists, recreational, and private individuals that enjoy flying drones. >> and white house press secretary karoline leavitt said the drones were, quote, not the enemy, and the new information came directly from president trump. there were no details on what kind of research the drones were doing.

new jersey congressman josh gottheimer called on the faa to release more details on the drones and the research. the winter weather is battering the northeast. high winds toppled a house under construction killing one worker and injuring several others south of boston. and the extreme cold has turned niagara falls into a frozen wonder with thick ice and snow surrounding the landmark. people from ohio to maine will see scattered snow showers through this afternoon, and lake-effect snow will impact parts of pennsylvania and new york through the evening. and in the south, a strengthening weather system will bring thunderstorms and heavy rain from dallas to san antonio this evening. those storms could become severe tomorrow with damaging winds and isolated tornadoes as they move into louisiana. now to deepseek, the chinese artificial intelligence upstart that rattled the american a.i. industry and markets this week. it's probably the first time many of you have heard the name

deepseek and a lot of us here hadn't heard of it until recently either. so cbs' anna coren sought out deepseek. >> reporter: in the heart of beijing wrapped in glass and steel sits an office on the fifth floor. we went to interview the ceo of deepseek, a chinese a.i. company which until monday was virtually unknown. as robots pass by cleaning the floor, our producer is told to leave. no filming here, he orders. but for the rest of the country, this is a moment of national pride. i'm so proud and feel good, says this work. with little fanfare and a fraction of the budget, chinese startup deepseek released an a.i. model that performed as well or better than any in the west. louis gave has studied the chinese economy for more than 30 years. how did deepseek pull this off? >> i think people are still trying to figure it out. what china's just proven is that if you build a ten-foot wall, they can invent an 11-foot

thousands of hindus rushed to take a holy bath in a river at the world's largest religious gathering. it's not clear what might have triggered the panic. authorities are expecting 100 million people to take part in the ritual bath at the confluence of three rivers. well, thieves took a joyride on a stolen subway train, and a plane filled with passengers catches fire. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." cnn says a passenger plane caught fire in south korea. the airbus bound for hong kong was preparing to take off from an airport in the southern part of the country when the fire started in the back of the plane. thankfully all 176 people got off safely. three people suffered minor injuries during the evacuation. no word yet on the cause of the fire. it happened a month after another passenger plane crashed at an airport in south korea killing 179 people. "the oklahoman" says the state board of education voted to advance a proposed rule to

ask the immigration status of students and parents. parents enrolling children in oklahoma public schools would be required to show proof of citizenship or legal immigration status. the rule wouldn't prevent students without legal status from attending school, but it would require school districts to submit the number of students lacking documentation. it still has to be approved by the legislature and the governor. "the new york daily news" says three young thieves took a subway train for a joyride. they posted video of it speeding through a tunnel sunday. their faces were covered by masks. transit sources say the train was not in use when it was stolen from a brooklyn station. one of them appeared to be sitting on the front of the lead car with his feet dangling over the tracks. they returned the train to the area where it was stolen. and up next, "mona lisa" on the move. what will happen to the iconic da vinci painting when the museum undergoes a major
