two favs for just 7 bucks? gotta be wendy's. this is breaking news from cbs news bay area. >> hello, i am sara donchey, we are following breaking news that is coming to us from across the country tonight. and it is something that is both incredibly rare and in equal measure horrifying. a commercial plane has crashed. it started here. it took off from wichita, kansas, and then it flew out to the east coast and flew all the way to washington, d.c., where it collided with a blackhawk helicopter near reagan national airport. we want to go through some of what we know about what happened there tonight and more information is coming out by the minute. 60 people and 4 crew members were on board american airlines flight 5342. it was approaching the runway at reagan when it crashed with a u.s. army

blackhawk helicopter around 9:00 p.m. eastern time, according to the faa and defense officials. you're looking at some live pictures of the potomac river. there are 300 first responders working there as we speak to handle what has become a major emergency. right now the rescue and recovery mission is very much underway. even from a distance you can see there are a whole lot of people there right now. and take a look at this, this for now is some of the only video we have of what might have been that collision and explosion. this was taken from an observation camera courtesy of earth cam. it's difficult to watch. you saw the airplane's lights blinking in the distance and then that bright light that looked like an explosion. this is the moment replayed for you, right there where you see it. just a little while ago, the ntsb and other officials had this news conference at reagan national airport at this crash. they did not, importantly, confirm any deaths or details about any of the people who were on board. here is what one

kansas senator had to say. >> that flight has been in existence about a year, and it is certainly true that in kansas and in wichita in particular we're going to know people who were on this flight, know their family members, know somebody, so this is a very personal circumstance as well as an official response. >> again, very importantly we do not have information about how many people have been killed. that is what is on everybody's minds right now. now, this crash happened, obviously, alongside a major city. there are highways nearby. there's the airport, of course, buildings, and then there was a park nearby where one man said he was and saw what happened. here's his eyewitness account. >> i noticed the planes start having irregular patterns and they all kind of dispersed from regular landing patterns. and then we looked up in the sky before that and we saw these white flare, like --
1:41 am
>> what did you think when you saw these white flares? >> we didn't think much of it. we thought they were like shooting stars. >> so families are waiting for news of their loved ones who were on board this american airlines flight. one man says that his wife texted him from the plane just moments before it was supposed to land. >> when's the last time you spoke with her? >> she texted me that they were landing in 20 minutes. >> can you show us the text message that you got from her? ? >> landing in 20 minutes. the rest of my texts didn't -- did not get delivered. that's when i realized something might be up. >> you can just imagine the anxiety that man is feeling and all of those families. you now, president trump has been briefed on the crash. he issued a statement saying in part may god bless their souls, thank you for the incredible work being done by our first responders.

commercial airline crashes are incredibly rare, as you know. the latest fatal commercial plane crashes in the united states included an accident that happened right here in the bay area back in 2013 on january 6th of that year. flight 214 crashed at sfo. three people died as a result of that crash. 187 people were hurt. one of the last deadly aviation incidents in the d.c. area happened in january of 1982. an air florida 737 heading for tampa crashed into the potomac only minutes after it took off from reagan. the plane hit a truck and several cars on the 14th street bridge as it came down. 78 people died on the plane and on the ground. ice on the plane's wings and engines and pilot error led to that crash. we spoke with an aviation expert tonight about the crash. scott miller is a lecturer at san jose state's department of aviation and technology, and he talked about what could come next in terms of this massive investigation that is going to

happen and is happening now into what went wrong. >> once the cockpit voice recorder is recovered from the american eagle airliner, we'll be able to hear what the crew talked about. and i guarantee you they talked about the traffic. now, looking at the adsb, the position reports that are automatically transmitted from the aircraft that are received by ground stations, they were exactly where they were supposed to be when they were supposed to be there making their approach to the airport. it appears that the helicopter was given an instruction to pass behind that arriving airliner. we're going to have to look really deeply to try to figure out why that didn't occur. and coming up, the search and rescue mission in the potomac is underway right now. why officials say the weather is making that so incredibly difficult tonight, darren?

>> coming up in this forecast sara, first may gray. we're waking up to gray skies tomorrow and it may stay that way most of the day. but then look what is coming our way. the pacific has finally woken up and there are, like, three separate rainmakers coming our way. and the totals could be good on this, like over a four-day period. forecast on this coming up next. >> all right, darren, thank you. and other headlines we're following, the brother of one of the bay area's most famous rappers was shot and killed in oakland. what we know about the crime and reaction from the community there tonight.

all right, welcome back, we are continuing to follow that major breaking news that is coming to us from the nation's capitol. an american airlines flight has crashed after it hit a u.s. army helicopter. the plane and the helicopter seem to have crash landed into the potomac river near reagan national airport. you're looking at these live pictures from the search and rescue operation. we heard at a news conference about an hour ago that conditions for this rescue operation are incredibly rough, that weather is making the search very difficult. >> the challenges are access. the water that we're operating in is about eight-feet deep. there is wind. there is pieces of ice out there, so it's just dangerous and hard to work in.
1:48 am
and because there's not a lot of lights, you're out there searching every square inch of space to see if you can find anybody. divers are doing the same thing in the water. the water is dark, it is murky, and that is a very tough condition for them to dive in. it's a highly complex operation. the conditions out there are extremely rough for the responders. it's cold. they're dealing with relatively windy conditions. wind is hard out on the river, so they're out there working. we're keeping -- doing everything we can to keep them safe. first alert weather powered by kia. learn more at kia.com. kia, movement that inspires. >> all right, so darren peck is in for paul tonight on a very busy news night. and so darren, obviously when you have a plane crash like this you look to the weather to see if the weather played a factor in what went wrong here. but it seems to me, at least, that this was a cool,
1:49 am
clear night in washington, d.c. >> yep. >> it wasn't as if there was a storm system over the area or anything like that. so i want to ask you about that first of all, what the conditions were like at the time hoff this crash just a few hours ago and also about the water temperature. i do want to remind our viewers that right now we don't have any information on whether or how many people were killed in this or whether there are survivors, but they did say they have about 300 first responders going into the potomac and around the potomac trying to get people out. >> right. >> and that it's very cold. >> late january on the potomac river. for those of us who aren't on that side of the country, it's bitterly cold. if we look at the water temperatures, where i'm standing off the coast in the atlantic, it's pretty warm out here. but i'm standing in the gulf stream. water temperatures out here are a safe, comfortable 70 degrees. but that's not where this plane is. this plane is actually in the potomac river, which sits over here which is much -- it doesn't have any benefit of getting the
1:50 am
gulf stream waters at all. instead, it's in late january air and late january weather. and even though the weather wasn't a significant impact on this, they did just have a pretty big pool of cool air and windy weather work its way down towards this part of the country. and when we take a look at how this has played out in terms of this surge of cool air that's moved down there, certainly colder for the last 24 hours than the two days before. the air temperature's in the mid-40s, but the water temperature's in the upper 30s. and that really is a major factor in this one. so hopefully there's more good news as we get to the light of day on this one, but it is going to be a long night there. let's come back home. let's talk about our weather and what we want to start off with is what you may have already been seeing and hearing about. there's rain in just about every single one of these terrariums right now. you started on friday, and we're going to look at friday in
1:51 am
specific detail in one second. it gets a bit murkier back here, but as of this point, every single day from friday through tuesday has rain in it. look at the big monitor up there. we're taking a look out in the pacific. it has just finally woken up and remembered where we live in terms of the storm track. and there's about three separate systems coming our way. that one looks particularly good. and if you recognize the pattern on there, these systems are all getting driven in with the potential to have an atmospheric river component to it. particularly the one on friday. let's scale this down. instead of starting out by looking out at the whole pacific basin on this, let's try and get a better handle on what this rain's going to look like. when it finally arrives and starts working its way right off the coast, and by the time we get there, we're going to see a pretty well organized line of rain that shows up. keep your eye on the time stamp down there. we're looking at friday. and by friday now we see a band of rain that starts friday morning. and it'll stay with us for about two days. this is the
1:52 am
first system. so like second half of friday, pretty much throughout all of saturday, rain. and if we look at it a different way, here's something we haven't had much need for to show you over the course of the last several weeks. because we haven't had the influence of one of these. but that's an atmospheric river. so you can see the higher concentrations of water vapor coming our way. the time stamp, that's getting here friday morning. let's look at friday in as much detail as we can, since friday is kind of like the opening round of this. and we do have better clarity on timing out friday's rain so. when we look at, that i'm going to go in order. start this on friday morning. a few like showers in the predawn hours on friday. i'm skipping ahead to friday, because nothing's happening tomorrow. marine layer gray, temperatures in the upper 50s, that's about it. when we look at where we're going to be on friday morning, rain in the north bay in time for the morning commute. so this is the start of what's going to be a pretty active period for us. if we take it from that point from
1:53 am
friday and advance it to the afternoon, let's bring it ahead to about noon on friday. and now we'll watch that line of rain get down to the city and the golden gate, watch time stamp here, middle of the day. and after this point, it gets a little more interesting. because that plume of moisture from the atmospheric river pretty much arrives at about this point. and if we take it from this point and play that forward, what happens is just green. widespread rain. friday afternoon probably into much of saturday. we're not concerned about flooding here. this -- we've got -- the landscape has had so much time to dry out over what was a very dry january that the concern from flooding here is very much on the low end. but if we look at rainfall totals, here's your quick snapshot takeaway. how much rain do we get from second half of friday through saturday, there are your numbers. there's another system coming after this, remember the seven-day's got rain through tuesday. that next tuesday system comes in, and now we start putting in the purples on
1:54 am
here. and we could be looking at anywhere from two to four inches over that period of time. these are very preliminary. the details on this are likely going to adjust as we get closer to it. we're going to refine the timing. we'll get specific on rainfall amounts. but if you're just looking at the weather like in your app right now, and you're seeing what is going on, why is there rain on every day, there's a chance on every day. it won't rain for five days straight and we'll have all the details on this as we get closer. but just get ready, sara, it's going to be a very different february than january. >> yes, it is. fortunately. all right, thank you so much, darren, we appreciate it. all right, if you are just joining us, we are keeping a close eye on this breaking news coming from our nation's capitol where first responders are working right now to find survivors of a midair crash. cbs news correspondent erica brown reports tonight from washington.
