plus, prehistoric puke? details on a disgusting discovery. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> hello. i'm sara donchey. as promised, it was a pretty cold and soggy end to what felt like a long week for a lot of us and the rain isn't done with us yet, perfectly timed with those weekend plans, in fact. it seems like we used to say that a lot. we haven't talked about a lot of rain lately. so what can we expect over the weekend? >> more rain coming at us in waves. some of the heaviest rain will fall over the next 12 hours or so. let's get to how things will evolve. we'll saturday with how they've already evolved. the radar replay over the last 12 hours shows at 11:00 a.m. today we had light to moderate showers which continued coming at us in waves throughout the afternoon. some of the widespread rain coincided with the evening rush hour, but we've
11:02 pm
seen a little break in the action this evening. you're seeing more shower activity off the coast, steadily making its way in. this is still light to moderate rain that is not going to lead to significant flooding threat. as we head through the rest of tonight, though, we'll switch from the current radar over to futurecast and take you through noon tomorrow because that's the window for the heaviest rain. the showers become more widespread. before the sun comes up tomorrow, the showers become a steady, moderate rain. some pockets of heavier rain show up in yellow on futurecast. those move through the first half of the day on saturday. if we were going to see any even localized flooding threat out of this system, that would coincide with the pockets of heavier rain. let's look how much has added up so far. the amounts are modest. close to an inch of rain in petaluma, generally half inch to an in of rain for the north bay. for the rest of the bay area it's between a 0.1-inch and a few tenths of an inch of
11:03 pm
total rainfall. the exception, livermore and the santa clara valley, san jose only picked up 0.06 thus far of rain, but there is more to come. this is a double-peaked atmospheric river followed up by a weaker atmospheric river later next week, so a lot of rain chances over the next seven days. you may wonder why are we calling this a double-peaked atmospheric river instead of three different ones? it's because we never completely get out of atmospheric river conditions due to the amount of moisture flowing through the atmosphere over our heads. even when the rain chances taper off sunday, there's still a lot of water up there. this ordinarily would be an ar2 followed by an ar1 and combine to result in an ar3, which is the middle of the scale. it means beneficial rain and potential for localized flooding. we'll get into more of that and add up the rain forecast over the next seven days coming up. we haven't gotten a lot of rain lately, but when it does rain, there are a few businesses in san francisco that seem to flood over and over again, which

helps planes work with mother nature when the wind comes in from the south or southeast like during stormy weather. just days after the plane crash over d.c. another absolutely devastating plane crash happened just today. this one crashed into a densely packed north philadelphia neighborhood. a medical transport jet with six people on board, one of them just a child, crashed just moments after takeoff. a nearby ring camera recorded the moment of impact and we do want to warn you, it is difficult to watch. you can see what was really a huge explosion after the plane hit the ground. several homes caught on fire after that explosion. at least six people on the ground were hurt according to a local hospital. one witness described the impact. >> when everybody said get down, we all get down, but i just see the plane is getting lower and lower and lower. it nipped a

into wednesday's deadly midair crash between american airlines flight and a black hawk helicopter from the army. 41 bodies have now been recovered from the cold potomac river. all 67 people on board both of those aircraft are confirmed dead. here we can show you a better picture what happened the night of the collision. runway 1 at reagan national airport illustrated in the yellow was the original flight path for the american airlines jet. it was switched, though, by air traffic control over to runway 33. the pilot confirmed and made that change. minutes later as the plane was making its approach, the plane and the helicopter collided right about where i'm standing on this map. both plummeted into the potomac below. the flight path over the river now is closed off to almost all helicopter traffic. investigators say they have recovered the black box from the black hawk helicopter, but bad weather slowed down recovery

past couple hours, but there are light to moderate showers trying to make their way in and there's more rain back out over the ocean that will continue making its way in the next several hours. this is not problematic. it's enough to make the roads wet, which is a concern when we've been dry for several weeks. the oil and transmission fluid, whatever cars drop along the way, kind of gets reactivated and makes the roads slick. the light to moderate rain becomes moderate to occasionally heavy rainfall. watch for the yellow on the map indicating heavier rainfall rates around sunrise and moving through the first several hours of daylight tomorrow. you're not going to see much daylight. there's not much sunshine visible. the widespread rain gives way to more of an on-and-off pattern through the evening. we stay in this

off-and-on shower pattern tomorrow evening through tomorrow night and a similar story sunday. sunday is slightly drier, but i would be flexible with any outdoor plans. definitely have an indoor alternative as we head through the weekend. this extends into next week as well with this double-peaked atmospheric river. there's a flood watch for the entire bay area that went into effect at noon today through 10:00 sunday. it looks like everybody has the same risk, but we don't. tonight we're looking at an outside chance of enough rain to be problematic, maybe a couple locations seeing high water concerns, but this is a marginal risk and the excessive rainfall outlook from the weather prediction center means it's not likely. we go up a category across most of the bay area tomorrow into the slight risk category which sounds reassuring, slight risk, but there is an elevated threat of too much water especially tomorrow morning in a short amount of time. that risk shifts to the north sunday as the entire atmospheric river kind of reorients itself, but this will come surging back across the bay area by late monday and into

tuesday. when we add up the rain over the course of the next seven days, this is on top of what has already fallen, we're seeing a range of rainfall amounts based on, of course, the terrain. just over 1 1/2 inches of additional rainfall in san jose, but in the santa cruz mountains close to 7 inches of additional rainfall around ben lomond. similar rain shadow effect around livermore, but 2 inches of rain is very welcome considering the deficit. most of us are running in the 2 to 4-inch total range, numbers higher for the north bay, generally between 5 to 6 inches of rain on top of the 1/2 to inch of rain that's fallen. if we were to see additional flooding problems, i think those would develop tuesday as that second peak heads our way, but there is that additional chance of rain towards the ends of the seven-day forecast. we have one dry day on wednesday and then more rain moves in, could be light showers thursday and friday. some of the latest forecast data indicates yet
