[ cheers ] ♪ >> beyonce. >> history at the grammys. beyonce takes home the top honor becoming the first black woman to win the prize in the 21st century. good morning. i'm michael george. well, we start with the growing concerns and fallout from president trump's plan to launch a trade war. the president declared an economic emergency to place tariffs of 25% on imports from mexico and canada, and 10% on all imports from china starting tomorrow. this will impact things that americans use every day -- oil, lumber, produce, auto parts, and electronics. booing the u.s. national anthem at yesterday's raptors-clippers game. naomi ruchim joins us with the latest. the president admits that this trade war could cause, in his words, some pain for american consumers. >> reporter: right. and that pain would feel pretty close to home at the grocery store for a lot of folks. where would we feel it? well, from mexico we're looking at higher prices on beef, fruits, vegetables, and nuts, including avocados just in time for that super bowl guacamole. the cost of cars, oil, lumber, and other building products are also at risk of sharp increases. and while retailers may try to take on some of that cost on their own, ultimately it will come down to the american pocketbook. america is on the verge of an international trade war after president donald trump signed an order imposing 25% tariffs on neighbors canada and mexico, along with an additional 10% levy on goods from china.

the order takes effect just after midnight tuesday. >> we may have short term a little pain. people understand that. long term the united states has been ripped off by virtually every country in the world. >> reporter: both canada and mexico have promised tariffs of their own in response, and even some republicans are questioning the move. >> people drive the cost of everything up. why would you want to get into a fight with your allies over this? >> reporter: the tariffs just one of multiple monumental news coming out of the new administration over the weekend. in a conversation on x overnight, leader of the new department of government efficiency elon musk spoke on the future of the u.s. agency for international development which may move under state department leadership. >> shutting down usaid -- >> reporter: cbs news has learned two top usaid security officials have been placed on

leave after denying doge personnel accessed to classified materials. on immigration, the trump administration is terminating a program that currently protects hundreds of thousands of venezuelan migrants in the u.s. from deportation. paving the way for many of them to lose their legal status by this spring. michael? >> a lot to follow. naomi ruchim, thanks for joining us. a crane will be brought in today to lift the fuselage of the american airlines plane that collided with an army black hawk helicopter over the potomac river near washington, d.c. families of the victims visited the crash site yesterday. all 64 people on the plane and three soldiers on the chopper were killed. the remains of 55 people have been recovered and identified so far. and the investigation into the cause of the collision continues amid concerns the helicopter may have been flying too low. the chopper's black box which contains key data has been recovered.

smorgasbord of chicken, apples, sardines, and peanut butter to lure the bear out. guess what, it worked. he was trapped, fitted with a gps collar, and relocated to the angeles national forest. those raiderbreaking and deadly california wildfires are finally under control. that story tops the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "usa today" says the palisades and eaton wildfires are now 100% contained after burning for nearly a month. fueled by powerful santa ana winds, the fires killed at least 29 people, destroyed more than 16,000 homes and businesses, and burned more than 37,000 acres. firefighters say the last remaining fires are in isolated steep mountain terrain. the l.a. mayor's office says the pacific coast highway is reopening today with one lane of traffic each way. and the bbc says a major highway partially collapsed as flooding in northeastern australia gets worse. torrential rain has washed away roads and caused a bridge to

cave in making it difficult for rescue teams to reach some of the worst-hit areas. a 63-year-old woman died yesterday when a small rescue boat trying to save her capsized. thousands of people have been urged to move to higher ground. weather forecasters say nearly 12 inches of rain could fall in a 24-hour period. and cnn says greece's so-called instagram island has been hit by more than 200 earthquakes sparking school closings and warnings to avoid indoor gatherings. the quakes which began friday have raded a popular -- rattled a popular tourist destination, santorini. one registered 4.6. santorini is known as instagram islands because of the photos taken by visitors. people have been told to stay away from four ports on the island. coming up, big moves in the nba. a dallas mavericks star offers fans an emotional farewell after a stunning trade. when the temperature drops... you've got two choices.

i'm not happy with the way that pg&e handled the wildfires. yeah. yeah. i totally, totally understand. we're adding a ton of sensors. as soon as something comes in contact with the power line, it'll turn off so that there's not a risk that it's gonna fall to the ground and start a fire.
