seen the light to moderate rain, giving way to moderate rainfall. those are the heavier downpours. you can see it surging in to marin, sonoma, napa counties, another kind of street of heavier downpours that's lining up. last frame of the loop shows the heavier frame that will be making its way in throughout the next few hours. let's take a closer look at the still radar image because the white box was outlined in the flood advisories issued for much of marin, sonoma, now they have been issued for san francisco and for alameda and contra costa county. so most of the bay area is included in those because they are looking at the large area of heavy rainmaking their way, but that will move across the entire bay area throughout the rest of tonight. so let's go back to the floor map and look at futurecast from right now through 2:00 tomorrow afternoon. you're going to see just wave after wave of rain, continuing

to surge in. it will taper off, but there will be pockets of heavier downpours as you see that moving in, the flow of moisture with the river continuing to inundate the bay area. the more rain that will fall on unsaturated ground, the potential for urban flooding will go up and the potential for wind damage will increase as well as they get squeezed by the approach of the storm system. so there is a wind advisory along the coast. this is where those gusts are possible. the rest of the bay area, 30 to 40 miles an hour gusts. strong enough to do some minor tree damage and wet soil, the root system of the tree cannot hold on, so we could get the tree damage, even when you're not expecting it. if you are heading to bed tonight, make sure the devices are charged up in case you lose power. a longer look at futurecast, and stop it and time out the heaviest rain tomorrow. well, parts of the forth had bay already flooded today. caltrans truck had to clear some

water from highway 121 and highway 112 in sonoma county this afternoon. and it is a nuance, nonetheless. here is what it looked like just a few hours ago in parts of sonoma county. two mud slides were reported along the road in healdsburg where they have also had some heavy rain with more to come. people in mel valley are keeping a close eye on the creek near sycamore park. in late december, it caused that creek to overflow, which flooded the neighborhood there. the city offeredded sandbags and debris crews are on standby. workers tested the pumps ahead of this storm. despite all the preplanning, one man who lives in that neighborhood says their family is prepared for the worst any way. >> they can do so much, but it is done to the residents of the well prepared for as well as they can and for events that hopefully would never happen.

>> the rain is coming down if novato, where the tree caused some power outages. kelsi thorud is live for us there tonight. i'm hoping this is an annoyance, verses causing a lot of problems already up in novato? >> reporter: yeah, for right now it is. it's been rainy and soggy up here in novato, but we haven't seen the severe rain that we're continuing to expect into the overnight hours. you can see we are downtown novato here, and there are not any issues here. this is an area that has flooded in the past. when we do get big rain events in this area. and tonight, it's been this kind of sweeping through, where we would see a few minutes of heavy rain and it will go back to heavy rain. we're not seeing any street flooding in the area that we're in right now, where we are also seeing a few wind gusts too, so the wind definitely seems to be

an issue here. and i think a lot of people are looking at this and maybe thinking, you know, it may not be as bad as what they thought. but the big thing is maybe what happens tomorrow morning during the commute as people wake up. of course, it's been raining all night. we could see some road flooding here as people head to work tomorrow. so people seem prepared, we have not seen them out tonight and people are taking precautions going into this, but for now, we're not seeing the worst of it yet. >> of course, it takes one tree down to cause a lot of problems. we appreciate it. people are also spending time getting ready. one woman has been helping her neighbors get ready for days, but they're

running low on one important item. >> i'm hoping we get sand soon. but it depends on what they can do to provide some sand. >> and crews plan to deliver send in the next day or two now to other big headlines where we are starting to see some pushback against the trump administration in the form of big protests. this one happened tonight down in los angeles, where people were marching in the streets, protesting planned mass deportations. and this is part of a larger nationwide movement supporting the day without immigrants initiative. today's protests were meant to highlight the contributions at immigrant communities have made in the u.s., and it isn't just l.a. there have been rallies and demonstrations here in the bay.

some stores and businesses like it this one in concord closed to show solidarity with immigrant workers. people in oakland's fruitvale neighborhood marched today. here is what one organizer told us about the protest. >> people are afraid naturally, but we are also having these actions to let people know they're not alone, and that they should not be afraid, and there is a whole community out there to defend them. >> reporter: a big crowd turned up it in their old karatekas square to show their support. santa rosa and sonoma county are dependent on workers in the wine region. long threatened tariffs on mexico and canada are on hold for 30 days. in fact, the president said the threats are having the desired affects. canada's prime minister promised to strengthen security at the northern border, something mexico's president agreed to earlier today. >> they have agreed to put in

a lot of people in contra costa county are very upset after a huge fire at the martinez refining company. it happened on saturday with these massive plumes of smoke forcing hundreds of people to take shelter for hours. our helicopter flew over the refinery earlier today. you could still see a little bit of smoke and some steam and a lot of charred equipment at the refinery. the company said the fire was caused by a leak of hydro carbon material. our amanda harry spoke to one

neighbor who is demanding accountability. >> reporter: fire and black smoke filling the air on saturday. justin gomez, a 13-year resident and member of the community refinery group was at home when he got an air quality alert around 2:00 p.m., >> i went out my front door and saw black moment piling up. >> reporter: he could hear rumbling, and his kids were afraid. >> my daughter threw some family stuffies into a play purse and said she wanted to leave, so we did. >> and they were still stressed out. >> they were asking if we are going to be able to come home. >> reporter: the fire was caused by a leak of hydro carbon materials that two workers found

during planned maintenance. workers evacuated as the materials caught fire. hundreds of pounds of sulfur dioxide were released. six people with health concerns were tied to the fire. a shelter in place alert was in order. representatives of the area said he's not surprised, but concerned. >> wake up and pay attention to your infrastructure. make sure your facilities are in good working order. >> reporter: on thanksgiving, the refinery released more than 20 tons of chemicals, covering people's cars and homes in metallic dust. the refinery spewed coke dust into the air. there has been numerous flaring incidents. and the refinery

responded more quickly this time. >> fines levied by the air quality board have had an affect as we saw it with this particular fire. >> reporter: contra costa announced an unexpected investigation. and gomez is still unhappy. he says there have been more issues to pdf energy in 2020. he wants to see accountability. >> i want to see an investigation from the federal government. workers were hurt. that means it meets the threshold to figure out what happened, and i want to see them shut down in the long term. >> crews are removing the wreckage of the american airlines jet after they collided

in dc last week. at least 55 of the 67 victims have been identified with more remains in the process of being identified now. they are still looking into how the two aircrafts collided. >> it is important for us not to speculate because there are all kinds of reasons to deviate. and you may deviate if you see something that is an obstacle or other threat to your flight. they showed a change in pitch to try to avoid a crash. all right, we do have to say weather aware because we have a storm moving in. i hear a lot

from people, it's not raining very hard where i live, but you never know where the problems will pop up. >> some of the heaviest rain will fall overnight when a lot of folks are sleeping and not aware of it. the ground is going to be pretty full. and that is when they will become a big concern. this has been aimed over the past several days and right at the west coast. after that, it is going to start to lose its influence on us with dry weather mostly in the forecast on wednesday. and then the forecast will dry out for several consecutive days. but we're not there yet. let's put some labels on the map, so we don't lose you. this is what it

looks like at the moment off the pacific and this is aimed for the moment and within this river of moisture and the whole thing is being nudged to the east. that's why they have been issued already for parts of the east bay, before the heaviest rain gets here. and let's track it throughout the rest of tonight. now through 4:00 in the morning and futurecast has a good handle on the rain spreading out to an even greater extent. could result in some localized flooding. another band of heavier rain is likely to head our way late morning tomorrow. this will coincide with the arrival of some gusty winds as well. that's enough to produce the potential as we were talking about and just an unpleasant day to be out on the roads with the pockets of

heaviest rare continuing. and where i'm standing and kind of lining up, this is a cold rain band that will divide the cold air that we will see in the entire system and some of the strongest winds tomorrow, which does coincide with the evening commute. after that, we'll see the rain moving out as we head through tomorrow evening. the whole thing will turn off as we should be seeing rain-free conditions. still under a flood watch and even one flood warning that's in effect for most of the bay area as we head through the rest of tonight. so everybody has that flooding potential even in spots where we haven't added up a whole lot of rain yet. and as we go through the overnight hours into tomorrow. so let's take a look at the amount that we expect overall. add it up with futurecast and how much rain,

we'll go to the north bay first. an inch and a half that is already approaching capacity, which is why it will be a concern and as we go through tomorrow morning and the rest of tuesday. and over an inch of rain will put a nice dense this evening. this is probably underdoing the number where you could pick up five inches of additional rainfall, and the forecast models are end kateing 40 to 50 miles an hour gust in the late afternoon, and that would be strong enough for the power grid and to make sure the

devices are charged up. snow levels are dropping down from the high levels that they were at over the weekend. they will pick up a foot or two with a couple feet of snow as they move into the bay area and some very heavy snow throughout the next several days. and for all of that we just talked about, it is actually a mostly calm seven-day forecast. wednesday, then friday and through the weekend, just two rainy days. tomorrow, rain and wind, rain without the wind threat on thursday. i don't think the rain will be as heavy on thursday. if it ranks as an atmospheric river, it will be real borderline. and then just kind of typical february weather as we head into the second weekend of february, but ten had again over the next 24 hours, just stay weather aware as that flood and wind damage will evolve. vern has a check at sports right now. and straight ahead in sports, a super bowl coach would

so there have been a few

moments in sports and one of them would happen it had weekend as you know it is earth shattering sports news when they are texting the sports guy like is it this real? and our phones lit up that the dallas mavericks decided to trade their super star, luka doncic to the los angeles lakers. >> yeah, okay. he was part of a three team deal with dallas, l.a., jazz. and the mavs got anthony davis. and not to be left out, along with second round picks from l.a. and dallas. and laker fans were like why would the mavs do this? if that is a collective reaction from everywhere you could imagine how mavs fans felt.
