war ravaged territory. the president also continued to push his plan to relocate the palestinian people to other countries permanently. he made the comments after meeting with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu at the white house, his first visit from a foreign leader this term. cbs' naomi ruchim joins us with more on this. naomi, president trump makes a lot of outrageous claims saying the u.s. should take over canada or greenland, but this idea is getting a lot of backlash even from some of our allies. >> and from some republicans, michael. good morning to you. in a word simply the reaction this morning is shock, and there are a lot of questions about how this could possibly even work given the complexities of the region. the prospect of resettling the 2 million palestinians in gaza could violate international law, and that's if neighboring arab nations even take them in. still, like the other stunning announcements we've heard from

president trump in the last few weeks, he seems set on moving forward. following the first meeting of his second term with a foreign leader, president donald trump proposed an all-out power grab of the gaza strip. >> the u.s. will take over the gaza strip, and we will do a job with it, too. >> the stunning statement came during a press conference following president trump's meeting with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu, who said the idea should be considered and praised the president for his work on the recent hostage deal. >> your leadership helped bring our hostages home, among them american citizens. you freed up munitions that have been withheld from israel. >> short on specifics president trump added that the palestinians in gaza should resettle elsewhere during the takeover. >> we'll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangers, unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site, level the site and get rid of it destroyed buildings. >> the announcement was met with

shock around the world. leaders of several of the most powerful arab nations have previously said that they strongly oppose any suggestion that residents of gaza be resettled in other nations. other experts say the proposal is unrealistic. >> it's not a plan that has any connection to reality in today's middle east. >> the meeting comes as israel and hamas begin talks on the second phase of a peace deal, which would free all remaining hostages and end the war. when asked who would eventually live in gaza once it's rebuilt, president trump said it would be home to mostly palestinians but said it should be an international place. michael? >> all right, naomi ruchim, thanks. the trump administration is pulling nearly all u.s. agency for international development workers around the world off the job and out of the field. a notice posted online yesterday puts thousands of direct usaid

hires on leave and gives them 30 days to return home unless they're deemed essential. contractors not determined to be essential will be fired. it's part of a plan to consolidate the agency into the state department. well, hundreds of people including democratic lawmakers gathered outside the treasury department to protest the power being given to elon musk and his government efficiency team. last week doge workers were allowed to access the department's payment system containing sensitive information involving americans' bank, social security, and medicare accounts. >> we cannot allow elon musk and a small group of people to secretly behind closed doors take away our private peace, take away our dollars, take away everything we have. >> democratic lawmakers who wanted to go into the treasury department were denied access,

and the treasury department says it only gave musk's team read-only access to the payment system. two groups of anonymous fbi agents filed lawsuits in response to the trump administration's efforts to identify employees who investigated the january 6th capitol riot. there are fears the justice department is putting together a retribution list of employees who investigated the insurrection and trump's classified documents case. the lawsuits are aimed at preventing the public release of the names of the agents facing scrutiny. the u.s. fires its latest shot in the trade war with china. the postal service now says it's temporarily suspending all inbound packages from china and hong kong until further notice. the move comes after china responded to president trump's tariffs by imposing its own levies on some american products. the trade war is likely to raise prices on a wide range of items. but right now there's no greater symbol of inflation in this

country than the egg, and now the waffle house restaurant chain is hitting customers with an egg fee. 50 cents an egg because the avian flu is driving up the cost. cbs' nancy chen reports from clifton, new jersey, on the rising price of just about everything. >> reporter: each trip to the store is getting harder for melissa robinson. >> i can't afford to, you know, eat a healthy diet for my kids and for myself. i just buy the minimum, the bare minimum. >> reporter: these days you're buying the bare minimum. >> yeah. >> reporter: how hard is it to put food on the table for your family? >> i spend at least $250 a week. >> reporter: with our grocery prices are more than 20% higher than they were four years ago in part due to supply chain issues, increased labor costs, and bird flu outbreaks. egg prices alone have gone up on average 65% in the past year and

are expected to increase 20% more this year, according to the usda. >> customers don't want anymore price increases. they're up to here. >> reporter: now the threat of tariffs is adding yet another challenge. for grocer stew leonard jr., the ceo of his 100-year-old family business. while tariffs on mexican and canadian goods are on a 30-day pause, goods from china are now subject to a 10% tariff. in general, where have you seen the biggest price increases? >> what we're just trying to do is keep our prices as tight as we can, not lower quality a bit. >> reporter: produce is especially vulnerable to tariffs. in 2023 nearly 60% of the fresh fruit and 35% of the fresh vegetables on store shelves were imported. how do you even operate when there's so much volatility? >> i mean it's very difficult, but we all have to eat. >> reporter: are you stockpiling things, already planning ahead for this? >> you can't really stockpile, right, because they're

perishables. i always say we're not selling wine. they don't get better with age. >> reporter: anthony serafino imports and distributes produce from latin america. >> goods are more expensive and they will be passed along to the consumer, so we're just preparing our clientele to make them aware. >> reporter: any price increase is a challenge for families already on a tight budget. >> we have to do what we have to do, but it's pretty much the bare minimum. >> reporter: we asked leonard what would be hit hardest if there are tariffs on goods. both pointed to avocados because we import about 90% of the country's supply. nancy chen, cbs news, clifton, new jersey. and president trump's cabinet continues to take shape. the senate confirmed former florida attorney general pam bondi as u.s. attorney general. the vote was almost entirely along party lines with democratic senator john fetterman joining republicans in voting for bondi. the nominations of two of trump's most controversial picks moved out of committee and onto the full senate in straight party line votes. the senate finance committee voted 14-13 in favor of robert f. kennedy jr. as secretary of

health and human services and the senate intelligence committee voted 9-8 for tulsi gabbard to be director of national intelligence. now to the wild weather hitting parts of the u.s. evacuation orders were issued along part of the russian river in california's sonoma county. a home was seen sliding into the river after torrential rains hit the area. thankfully no one was home at the time. the sheriff's office says current forecasts expect the river to swell to more than 35 feet in certain parts today. and farther east a new winter storm will bring the threat of ice and snow to 40 million people from kansas city to boston. by the evening commute drivers in indianapolis and cincinnati could be dealing with a slippery trip home. and overnight ice will accumulate in parts of pennsylvania, virginia, and maryland. coming up, diamond district raid in new york city, how it could be linked to the burglary of a high profile athlete. and the son of basketball great michael jordan is

quarterback joe burrow. prosecutors say two men arrested yesterday ran a pawnshop where they allegedly received stolen goods stolen by south american gangs from multi-million dollar homes across the u.s. it's not clear if the men are involved in a larger nationwide burglaries of pro-athletes homes. the orlando sentinel says michael jordan's son, marcus, was arrested in florida on a cocaine possession charge. >> i'm michael jordan's son. i'm not doing anything wrong. >> now, police say they found the former university of central florida basketball player's lamborghini stuck on railroad tracks. according to an arrest affidavit jordan fled a traffic stop in a neighboring county shortly before he was found. he was charged with dui, cocaine possession, and resisting arrest. and penn live says 100,000 eggs were stolen from a central pennsylvania egg supplier. the eggs worth about $40,000, were stolen from the back of a distribution trailer wednesday

well, football fans are expected to bet more than a billion dollars on the super bowl this year, and a data breach strikes a popular food delivery service. here's courtney kealy with today's "moneywatch." the market gained ground led by tech stocks. the dow increased 134 points. the nasdaq is up by 262 points, and the s&p 500 rose 43 points. the food delivery service grubhub says a data breach has impacted an unknown number of customers' contact information. the company says it traced the breach back to a third party provider after unusual activity was detected. now, place your bets. an estimated record $1.39 billion of legal wagers will be placed during this year's super bowl between the two-time defending champion kansas city chiefs and philadelphia eagles. that's according to the american gaming association. 38 states, washington, d.c. and puerto rico, now have legal sports betting in some form. mcdonald's is bringing back

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. one of the world's most active volcanos continues to put on a show. the kilauea volcano on hawaii's big island started erupting bright streams of lava yesterday with some reaching 250 feet high. the latest round of eruptions began in december. the lava does not pose a threat to homes. a new study found increasing amounts of microplastics in human brains. the study published in the journal "nature medicine" says researchers found microplastics in brains have increased 50% in the past eight years. they also found people with
